Sorry to hear about Dewey, thoughts to both you and your wife.
Dogs are Big part of the family, always there to welcome you back home, or understand you emotions.

Quoted from Skatewake:As i have a retired hound or i should say a couch potato
[quoted image]
Awesome.
We have two retired racers and my daughter has an Italian Greyhound.
Couch potatos indeed (except for the little one who is nonstop energy).
Here’s the other two.
Quoted from pinwiztom:Came back from the vet today.
We had to leave Dewey dog behind.
Can not say it was unexpected,
he having just turned 17yrs old last week.
I got to spend his last 12 yrs with him constantly by my side.
I will miss him greatly.
My wife is taking it very hard, as she has had him since he was a pup
and Dewey was there for her when my wife's 17yr old daughter
died tragically in a car accident 15yrs ago.
I am sure some of our cats will take it hard also.
Jack the cat (19yr old) was his best bud forever
and Leroy (long hair Siamese) loved that dog to the point of almost pestering him.
Dewey has been on the decline for a while,
but it is never easy to make the decision to let go.
He had cataracts in both eyes and likely totally deaf.
No longer able to climb stairs or jump on/off the couch and of late,
even having difficulty walking on our hardwood floors without losing his grip.
He still had a good appetite until a few days ago,
But his energy level recently took a dive and we saw that he had blood in his stool,
and he at times (in recent weeks) not able to make it outside in time to do his pee & poo business
so after a visit with the vet, and he explaining the likely causes of his situation
and that Dewey was unlikely to get better, we made the hard decision to say good bye.

The above pics were from this morning before going to the vet.
True signs of a loving responsible pet owner, knowing when quality of life is no longer there and time to let go. Not easy to do...... Sorry to hear brother
Wow - Dewey. Such a large inprint on your life and that of your family for such a little dog - he must have been absolutely amazing. My thoughts for you and your family, and how wonderful to have that much time with such a good boy. Still, I'm sure it wasn't long enough.

I have done this too many times....I know that feeling all too well. very sry for you.
Wanted to share a few more photos of Dewey when he was younger
that I have dug up

That's what I was thinking!
Quoted from Madmax541:Great loyal friend will be missed.
Sorry for your loss, my mom had to put her labradoodle (Lucy) down after 11yrs, was fine then for about a week she was panting and started coughing, my mom took her to the vet and they found in a chest x-ray she had cancer almost everywhere.
Quoted from pinwiztom:we made the hard decision to say good bye.
Very sorry for your loss.
Quoted from stavio:Please drop that bacon.
While I thought this picture was cute, it never occurred to me that if I dropped the bacon, they would probably rip each other apart before it hit the floor.
Bacon (resized).jpgIts been a week since Dewey has been gone.
One of our cats, Leroy, has been crying out for him all week, as they were especially close.
Yesterday was the first day, that my wife did not tear up over his departure.
I miss getting up first thing in the morning to take him out to do his business.
I miss taking him out last thing before going to bed.
When I look at the grass (or lack thereof) on either side of the sidewalk down the steps from the porch, I think of Dewey.
I will even miss picking up his poops from the lawn.
When outside we never had to worry about keeping him on leash, nor worry about him chasing squirrels or cars.
He was the kindest dog to strangers and happy to meet new friends, human or canine.
I miss not having a little vacuum cleaner for cleaning up morsels that fall to the floor.
I miss the dog barking whenever the doorbell rings.
I miss Dewey's farts and bad breathe.
I miss not having him under foot almost constantly wherever we moved throughout the house.
I miss his distinctive waddle walk and giddyup trot.
I miss the sound his toe nails made hitting the wood floor as he walked to the door
late at night to warn us to get up so he can pee outside. And sometimes I would join him in the yard for a late nite wizz.
I miss his feeding time, first with a mix of dry and wet food, followed up with a soupy mixture of the cat's leftovers.
I miss the water drips scattered on the wood floor surrounding the water bowl.
We and the cats no longer have a snuggle buddy for naps.
We love you Dewey and you are surely missed.

Gone through this many times.....(I'm old) get another dog..it's not the same...but it helps. Hopefully you get one that acts alike with Dewey, you can never replace Dewey, but another did help me. (2) in fact...and I still miss my "Misty" Greatest dog ever...but these guys are good dogs too. Misty below pic..and thenewer guys..below that.
I had Dashounds and a awesome Doberman pinscher, that did anything I commanded (very well trained). but Misty stole my heart..never to be replaced. She was a hunter right out of the box..and played frizby with me all day long..I miss those days so much, I could cry. In fact, I am.
Excuse me for the constant updating. I can't believe how this thread has effected me, Misty has been gone for 8 years, and man, this has hit me hard.

Funny how such a small person can leave such a huge void when they're gone.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.

I've missed your posts about Dewey, so thank you!
Dewey had Pinside families all over.
Quoted from ShinyBall:get another dog.
Not likely since we are old
plus the fact that we have 9 other indoor cats
and they are getting to be a bit too much for my wife
(and she is the one who went out and adopted them all).
She is barely able to walk anymore without a great deal of pain,
so a new puppy or even a senior dog may be a bit more than she will be able to handle
as she is always nearly tripping over her animals as it is now.
We loved Dewey dog, but he did need lots of attention
and basically meant we could not leave the house overnight without taking the dog
or be away from the house more than 6hrs without him.
Cats, as long as you have plenty of litter boxes, and several bowls of dry food and plenty of water
can manage a long weekend without human contact fairly easy, dogs not so much.
My wife has said that if I die before her, she might consider getting another dog again for protection.

So true.
Two things I miss the most getting greeted every time I come home and him always by my side.
We will get another dog

There's plenty out there that need a forever home.
pinwiztom you have too much love still to give!
A furry friend to help ease the pain just could be the ticket.
It took me 10 weeks before I realised this and fostered / adopted my crazy mate Kumo.
Never looking back. He is also extremely grateful as he was " raised " for his first year in an aboriginal community where he was mistreated.
He is not the best , but he is loved and love is given back ( in his own special way ha ha )
Quoted from FatPanda:Not quite sure what to do about this
Under cab inspections in progress.
One less racer in the family today.
Hopper had been sliding down hill for a while, but seemed to be hanging in there.
He started favoring one of his legs back in march and got better with some meds etc.
Started getting progressively worse three weeks ago and over the weekend and last night it got really bad. I got one hour sleep as I was up with him all night taking care of him and petting him. Was supposed to be on a flight to Florida today, but cancelled that. Spend most of the morning hanging out with him in the dog bed and giving him treats.
Basically had to carry him to the car. Made sure to grab a burger for him from Dairy Queen as well as a doughnut as those are two of his favorite things to steel when nobody’s looking. Tried my best to make his last day as awesome as possible.
My wife is a friggin mess right now.
I’m coping with my second Scotch on the rocks.
Friggin awesome dog that would stay up with me every night doing whatever I was working on.
Tough decision, but I think it was the right one.
Off to the big race track in the sky.
May you catch manny rabbits my friend.

Thanks a guys.
It’s pretty rough right now.
We have another greyhound (Kissy) that we adopted at the same time as Hopper. They’ve been together since their race days. The entire time we have had them, they would both race to their bowls and just scarf down their food. Starting about a week ago Kissy would not touch her food until Hopper ate(she basically knew what was going on). This morning he digressed so quickly that we had to hold the bowl in front of him so he would eat.
Now that he’s gone, she (Kissy) is basically not eating. She walked around the house looking for him before she would touch her food. My wife had to hand feed her.
She keeps going and looking at the spot where he would always lay down and then she whimpers, which is really hard to watch.
Trying to spoil her the best I can right now with attention and snacks.

Heartbreaking ... such gentle souls our animals possess...
