Since the last major refresh, I've noticed that the site doesn't reliably remember which threads I've read before or not.

I've checked the upper-right corner of the screen and can confirm that it does think I'm logged in. Going to one of the forums, though, it doesn't always remember which threads I've read and thus it doesn't show the ones w/unread messages in green.

    Anyone else seeing this behaviour?

SOLUTION (worked for me at least): Sign out, then sign back in again

    ^Same here.

    #3 11 years ago

I have noticed that as well.

    #4 11 years ago

Same here when using my phone.

I can confirm that something got messed up, but I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is and/or when it happens. If you have any more info that *might* be helpful for me figuring out when this happens, do not hesitate to post below! Thanks!

I'm applying some changes to the authentication system shortly. If you notice anything weird happening, please let me know by posting in this topic or use the contact form.

Done. Is the site still working?

    #8 11 years ago

Not sure if the changes caused this but it no longer leaves me signed in. Everytime I open the site I have to sign in again.

    #9 11 years ago

Yep has everything to do with the current issues. Do you have cookies enabled? I don't see you signing in on my end...

    #10 11 years ago

I do have cookies enabled. I am currently on, and just left the window up so it stays signed in. Was fine until this morning so not sure what is up.

Seems to be working again. Just closed browser and opened it back up and was left signed in this time.

It seems a little weird re: cookie management for me. I will lose it and have to sign in again frequently, and I don't think it's a timeout because sometimes it will hold on for a while, others not. Have not changed my browser config / done any updates since before the pinside update when it remembered me seemingly forever, if that helps info-wise. When it has "lost" me, it still shows my name in the corner, but no avatars on posts, no viewed threads, the main page shows a blank quote for the "quote of the day" and is missing other info I believe, I can't search, etc.

I am still seeing issues with the site loading on my phone pretty consistantly (avatars, karma points, threads I've visited). No problems from my laptop though.

    #14 11 years ago

I had these same issues, but it seemed localized to Safari for me. Chrome worked fine. For the moment though, Safari seems to be working okay again for me. Will keep messing with it...

Every thread just went all unread for me again. If I log in later it will probably be OK again.

    #16 11 years ago

Just came back and it showed 12 new posts in this thread since my last visit. It did not show me here even though I made the previous post. Everything else is back to normal.

    #17 11 years ago

I just came back since posting this earlier today, and see "no new posts in threads I'd read before". Everyones avatar image is gone too (but I suspect that's a separate issue).

Let me see what happens if I sign out, and then sign back in again...

    #18 11 years ago

    Ok.... that's better

Logged out, then logged back in, and now I see (1) everyone's avatars, and (2) green boxes indicating new posts in threads.

Makes me think is authen related.

On a quasi-related side note... when you click "Sign Out" and it takes you to the screen that says "You're now logged out"... you cannot log back in from that page again.

It, uh, logs you in, redirects you back to that page, which then in turn immediately logs you back out. Lol...

I've done this before on my own sites, its a laugh. Robin, you might want to add a custom redirect for logins from the "logout page" which take you back to the main page of the site.

Coming back to my original issue though... logging out and logging back in again seems to have resolved the problem so far.

FYI... I can also confirm... after restarting my browser things were still working.

Haha, yeah I kinda knew about that one
Never got round adding that redirect, will add to my to do list.

So a mayor problem with the auth system was solved. In case you're interested, the problem was caused by the subdomains (forum-img.pinside.com and img.pinside.com) also generating auth tokens and deleting expired ones. It was a complete mess. Took me several hours just to find out about it.

Keep me posted about any problems, thanks!!
