I put my Firepower on Mr. Pinball. I received an email from a guy in CT named Kenneth Roy with an email addess of [email protected]. Anybody know him? We go back and forth a bit but he just sounds "off." Here's his email responses.

hi,I want to know if you still have your machine for sale at $1200,if
you
do,email me with pictures.

Thanks and Regards.
Ken

Hi Donald, thanks for the mail and picture link,at this moment I think
I am falling for this machine,I hope there are no major wear marks on
this machine as I want to believe that this is worth the offer. Email
me as soon as you can.

Best regards,
Ken.

hi,thanks for the mail and I appreciate you being blunt and
straight,it shows you are a man of your principle,I will count on your
words and buy this from you,I am located within Connecticut and will
arrange for the pick up to be made if need be,but this will be after
payment,

Regards,
Ken.

thanks for the mail, payment will be made through a cashiers check and
the pick up will be after payment is okay with you,if this is fine
with you email me your payment details so I can mail out payment soon.

Regards,
Ken.

Maybe I'm being paranoid but this doesn't seem right. Just SCREAMS scam.

#2 9 years ago

It's a scam.

#3 9 years ago

Does have a certain "Nigerian" feel to the wording.

#4 9 years ago

It's either a SCAM or this guy has the longest run-on sentences.

#5 9 years ago

To borrow a phrase from LOTR. "Ruuuuunnnnnnnnnn!"

#6 9 years ago

So get the cashiers check. Get the cash in hand and see what happens...

#7 9 years ago

Offer bankwire, paypal, paypal gift, or even personal check and see what response you get. I'm sure it'll need to be a cashier's check

#8 9 years ago

When someone uses the term "regards" it usually sends up big time red flags.

Not all the time!

#10 9 years ago

Does sound sort of... just kind of... off. Receive the cheque (I'm Canadian, it's spelled right ), and see if it's for $2000 and he wants change along with the machine.

#11 9 years ago

No way it's not a scam. His email suggests he knows pinball. How can he know pinball and not know how transactions are conducted?

#12 9 years ago

Just tell him you will only take cash, and see what happens.

Quoted from spfxted:

Of course not in your case Ted. But that's because I already know English isn't your native language.

#14 9 years ago

his "agent" should be contacting you soon...

If you ever have to ask if it's a scam, it's a scam.

#19 9 years ago

yes it is a scam. most scammers doing the "overpay cashier check/agent scam" always make a big deal about how pickup will only be arranged after the check clears.

go ahead and give this POS an address (doesn't have to be yours) so that you waste his time and money. They generally like to send it via some sort of Overnight/Express service to make it look legit.

#20 9 years ago
Quoted from F3TT:

yes it is a scam. most scammers doing the "overpay cashier check/agent scam"

That's why it's always straight cash homie

#21 9 years ago

Thanks guys,

Figured so. No one "falls" for Firepower. I'm just gonna ignore the guy and if he emails again, I'll tell him cash at pick up.

What......you guys don't think that's legit?

#23 9 years ago

I will count on your words...AWESOME. Catch phrase of 2015

#24 9 years ago

A scam but personalized
Usually you receive a text or email with "still available?
When you respond you get the cashier check sending someone to pick it up BS.
Doesn't usually have the personal touch. Usually do not ask for pictures, they really don't care.
Sounds like the usual scam but from a pinball collector

He took the "s" away from principles and added to "word"......and only my wife appreciates me being "blunt and straight".

Or FedEx Overnight cash. I've done it...

SCAM!!! Every Nigerian scammer uses: Best Regards, Regards or Hope you are well.

#30 9 years ago

Tell him your friend in CT has a nicer FP he is looking to sell for the same price. (If he says he wants to see it send him my way)

I close correspondence with "Regards," English is my first language, but my emails come from [email protected] and I only do cash.

#33 9 years ago

I received a note from the same Ken just yesterday (12/11), inquiring about a Frontiersman I have had listed on Mr. Pinball. Not doubt about the scam, unless Ken can chime in a defend himself.

Lots of people use "regards". That and "thanks" have basically replaced "sincerely".

Oh no. All the letters I send to clients end in "best regards". I need to update my letter template immediately!!

When the hell will people learn. If it smells like dead fish, it is f'ing dead fish!!!!

#37 9 years ago

Yeah.....Nigerians!

#38 9 years ago

Can we just set up a pinside server-side script to automatically reply "YES IT'S A SCAM" any time anyone asks this? The answer is always the same.

#39 9 years ago

We should put a pin for sale on the CT Craigslist, and then when he wants to send a check, give him a Nigerian address to send it to.

I love Firepower! I hate that mine needs displays and a better backglass. But I bought one because I fell for it.

#41 9 years ago

Your machine......DING DING DING DING. I always call a game by title. I say its a scam

#42 9 years ago

I tell you want I will do. I will come get it and pay you in monopoly money. This way I have a pin and you have a way better advantage of winning against anyone you ever play in monopoly. See win win for both of us. SCAM! FYI: Google his name and Facebook his name. He will pop up somewhere if he is real.

#43 9 years ago
Quoted from wdpvideo:

Google his name and Facebook his name. He will pop up somewhere if he is real.

You could google my name, but even with a relatively uncommon name there are still a few others with it (at least 10 on linked-in), so how would you know if any are actually him?

Most name will tell the area they are from linked-in but I would not used linked-in for names.

Who would pay for a machine without recourse to someone they have never met? If you were buying a machine, would you pay in advance with a method you couldn't dispute or refund? Anyone who offers to pay without seeing the machine in person or even picking it up is a scammer.

Scam works like this: Dude will send you a cashiers check for more than the value of the item. He will say, "I already had this check" or something, and say, " I trust you to send me the difference back". So you mail him a personal check or cash. Dude never picks up the game. Weeks later the cashiers check is found to be fake when it is mailed to the originating bank. The originating bank notifies your bank, your bank then auto pulls the funds from your account. So scammer got the 'overage' as grift.

" I will count on your words"...

Everybody that pre-ordered TBL.

Ken just sent me email today about my STTNG that is on Mr. Pinball. I wonder how many emails he sends out before someone falls for it?

#48 8 years ago

Run the other way ,I got one like that before ,I would tell him cash only and see what he says about that

2 months later
#49 8 years ago

This guy is still at it

#50 8 years ago

Of course he is. It's some people's jobs to check classified ads. Here's a good one. I was going to junk a car not too long ago, but I decided to throw it up on Craigslist for two days until I got hold of the junker.

This is the ad I posted:
2004 Black Chevy Impala - $1000 OBO

***Selling a 2004 Black Chevy Impala with 160k miles. Was running decent but is now overheating. Not trying to screw anybody so you'll only get the bad.

Engine Overheating
Dent on hood
Hail damage
Scrapes and scratches on body
Gauges don't work
Driver's window sometimes won't roll up. Needs new window switch
Rear passenger window has broken motor assembly
Stains on the floor
Leather seats worn out
Steering wheel worn badly
A/C lukewarm
Needs new brakes
Burn in passenger seat and back seat.
Smells like smoke
Michigan owned - rusty undercarriage
Has not had recall work done

I believe this would basically be a parts car, unless you can do the work yourself.***

After getting a text asking if it was still available and an email address, this is the email I received:

Thanks for getting back to me and i appreciate your prompt reply..I am
presently out of town now.. I am buying this for my son as a surprise
gift. However, does it have any history I should be aware of? and why
are you selling if you don't mind my asking and I will really
appreciate if you can email more info and if possible more photos. I
can only pay through Paypal at the moment as i don't have access to
my bank account online(i don't have internet banking with it), but i
have it attached to my Paypal account, and this is why i insisted on
using Paypal to pay,all i will need is your Paypal email address to
make the payment, and if you don't have a Paypal account yet, you can
set one it cant take you less than 3mins to do that, i will be
expecting your Paypal email so l can pay
and your phone number. I have a pick up agent that will come for the
pick up after payment has been sorted, l will be waiting for your
reply asap. James Thomas

So he wants to surprise his son with it? Does it have any issues?

Needless to say, there was some stringing along until I finally got under his skin enough for him to tell me "cool no problem i will surly get you and kill you with your family you this useless animal"

Thanks for the laughs James Thomas!
