    This came off a system 11a mpu (U56). Does the top "I8544" part matter? I am able to find a bunch of other chips with the same lower number...

    I accidentally broke a pin off of it

    You do not need to worry about the top numbers.

    That's the date code indicating when the chip was manufactured.

    It's sometimes helpful for figuring out if a chip is counterfeit or not, though you generally don't have to worry too much about common 7400 series chips.

    It is a "generic" 7406 hex invertor.

    You need to be careful what you replace it with as there are several variants of this chip, 74LS06, 74HCT06, 74AC06 and so on. These additional letters tell us that these are chips with the same functionality BUT different electronic structure and are used in applications such as all CMOS circuits and so on.

    In this case, look for a 7406 which will probably also have the manufacturers letter preceding the number such as SN7406 etc.
