I know when Stern made the Metallica LEs they printed up 500 numbered plaques and just randomly pulled one out to attach to the next machine being built. I would assume all of their numbered machines are done that way too...so to answer the question...it does not matter unless the person buying the machine doesn't know this and is willing to pay more for it based on wether he(she) thinks a high number is better than a low number or vice versa. The only thing you can really go on is the "born on date" and then you would still need to have all of the born on dates of all the other machines to know where yours falls in the production order.
