Does diode on "top" or "bottom" of coil lugs make a difference?

I've been chasing my tail trying to fix a non-functional left flipper on my Sopranos after a diode>transistor failure. First I replaced the diode and transistor. Didn't work. Then, I sent the boards out to be tested and/or repaired. Tech says there's nothing wrong with them. The only thing left to replace is the coil. When I replaced the diode, I just put it between the lugs without care where exactly it was on the lugs (besides direction which is obviously important). Now reading the manual, I'm seeing a note about specifically where the diode should be:

"Coil Part Numbers ending with a "T" signifies the Diode is on the top of the lug (on the coil-winding side); Coil Part Numbers ending with a "B" signifies the Diode is on the bottom of the lugs."

I figured a lug is a lug. Would misplacing the diode on the lugs prevent the flipper from working? I'm just trying to be really cautious right now because I've hit a wall at this point.

Weird. Electrically no difference. The only thing I can think of is if the coil is near something metal it could ground out on and trying to keep the diode away from that. I’ve always ran them or seen them on the ‘top’ side though.

You have high voltage on the lug by the diode band?

OB was done to make the diode easier to replace in most mechs, if lore is accurate.
