This thread is the interest list so your place in the queue is your post #21, which is kit number four when I start shipping the next batch, probably after the summer when I have parts ready and some more feedback from the initial batch.

#57 4 years ago

I spent a few hours with this kit.

Be sure to have a drill press and quality cobalt drill bits. I also have a coordinate table, and I still mounted the bracket to a piece of wood for stability when drilling. I also cut a small piece of wood to place under the bracket to prevent "bowing" when drilling. May have been overkill, but the bracket is not available.

Measure and mark your bracket and verify the measurements. Take notes.

Ulf's guide is very helpful, and I will providing feedback to.him on what he can include in his manual to help others.

Do you think there's some kind of template that could be printed to make the measurements idiot proof?

I can sit down and make one, but ideally measuring is the best way to go. Ulf has really solid instructions and with my comments to him I think the novice user will have very little trouble doing this retrofit.

I have made a few drawings already, but I will make a few templates and see if they are worthwhile.

Put me down for one kit with aluminum cam and outer rail. Not sure of color option yet.

Received my kit the other day. I won't be able to install for about a month, but the kit is AWESOME. Super nice manufacturing, and you can see in the video how well it works. Incredibly well designed.

#65 4 years ago

Kit is almost finished and installed. just debugging it. Here is a vid of it

#66 4 years ago

Just know this kit is fantastic. It is very easy to install. You will need a drill press, cobalt drill bits and good measuring tools. Layout is very critical.

The up and down adjustment for the MPF was well thought out and it is easy to adjust. I am glad to have been a part of this test group, as Ulf has been so helpful. I have providing feedback for both instructions and the unit itself.

There is no way for a template to be made for installation. I had several of my machinist friends look at this and all said measure, measure and take your time.

Thanks

Ken

I figured a 3D printed drill template could work for the reinforcement so I came up with these two, made of PETG but PLA will be fine too.
They will be able buy or download, I just want to verify them after drilling before uploading them to Thingerverse.

Nice job Ulf. I hope this helps those who are nervous about installing the kit. These will save time and hopefully prevent any mistakes that could happen from measuring incorrectly.

I almost wish I had another Dr. Who, so I could try this template and provide feedback.

Ulf did a an amazing job with this kit and his instructions. I only had a few 100 questions for Ulf, LOL and he did an amazing job answering them and helping me with my kit.

Awesome! I will absolutely test these

Installed the kit, its pretty straight forward with the modified cam. Only hiccup I experienced was that the metal bracket that attaches to the adjustable shaft was putting too much pressure on the opto target bank wiring and was causing the center target to stick in the housing.

Great mod.

No problem, your feedback is very valuble to me for the improvement if this kit and the manual.

I sent you a pm and well look in to what might be the cause of this and see how it can be handled in the best way.

I saw that the wires were close, but I just adjusted them, to avoid the interference.

#73 4 years ago

Its quite tight between the opto bank and the stand up target, I dont wont to remove the washer either as its an important support for the rod end joint.
The center attachment has slots where its mounted to the playfield and can be adjusted a bit but the wires has to be angled right down from the opto targets.
Will take a closer look at this and see if therés any room for improvement or adjustment.

This looks amazing!
Please add me to the list for the Kit + Cam Kit, blue-fine

So to send to US It seems like it should be 1800 (kit) + 600 (cam) + 100 (blue fine texture matte) + 150 (us shipping) + fees = ~2600 SEK, correct?

Will I be able to do this with a vise and handheld drill or do I need a drill press?

How much is the template?

It is fairly easy. A drill press is recommended, do not use a small 18" press because the main assembly plus your drill bit will require the extra height.

Thanks for the info. I might just make a jig and use a drill guide, don't exactly have room in my nyc apartment for a drill press just for this project.

#77 4 years ago

I'm interested, I might be missing something, but cant they be supplied already drilled?

#78 4 years ago
Quoted from thewool:

No. Your Main bracket needs to be drilled out to accept the kits parts. You drill out the Main Aseembly and Motor bracket. Hence, why Ulf made a nice template. It is easy to measure, but his Add-on templates are worth the money if you are uneasy with precise measurements on metal without proper tools.

Buy a press, then return it. One and done. Boom.

#80 4 years ago

Here is a pic of both parts, I already drilled the main assembly and marked the Motor bracket for the center bolt

That looks correct depending of how the payment is made with PayPal.
Screw the bracket on to a piece of wood and support it in the middle between the wood and the opto attachment.
Sharp drill bits is neccesary and pre drilling with a smaller drill bit can help since you will see were the hole ends up when looking through the drill hole with the template attached, use a round file to adjust the position before final drilling, you might be able to do it like that with a handheld drill but a drill press is prefered.
More than 2.5 mm off center will cause the lower shaft rail attachment to get stuck against the reinforcement, but the reinforcement doesnt allow more than 1.5 mm off since its made to center it self against two of the gearbox bracket screws.
Cost for both templates is 30sek but if you own or know someone with a 3D printer the .stl files are available here https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3402051
Just double check the c-c distances after printing.

Thanks Ulf. This is the best mod ever! So easy to install really, especially now with the drill templates. Very nice work thanks for putting the time and effort into this, your attention to detail really makes this special. Mine has been back out on location for about a month now and still working perfectly (and this thing gets serious play). Here is the link to the Facebook post I made about it. Someday I'll edit my videos and photos of the build out together. Thanks Again I can't recommend this enough, great work!

Small update, the next batch will start shipping in september/october, the lower linear shaft
attachment is now available in aluminium, price is 500sek for a set of 2 pieces, buyers of the already shipped initial batch will get a discount on a set since these wasnt available back then.

pellew is developing a new motor controller board for the gearbox motor, the board is up
for testing and has some nice features that the original board is missing.
Adjustable current overload protection with retraction, adjustable speed, manual movement
control on the board and an external wired control can be connected which is useful when
testing the elevator after installation, extra input for other future features.
20190818_204656 (resized).jpg20190818_204656 (resized).jpg
The measured current with the original motor controller board is about 0.5A when the
elevator is moving without problems but when something gets in the way or if it jams, the
current increases to about 3.5A for about a four seconds until it reverses, this can
potentionally damage the gearbox, especially with the original elevator bracket design but
also with my modification if a ball gets stuck between the playfields (this happens rarely
though).
Testing of the original elevator bracket setup with the original motor controller board and simulated jam, fast
forward to about 4 minutes in the video for the jam test.

I recommend this board to all DW owners, the board will work for several other pinball
machines as well, pellew will chime in with more details about his product.

#87 4 years ago

Just keeps getting better and better. The concern about a ball getting lodged between the layers is always a concern. A small one, but nevertheless could be catastrophic if it actually happened.

Keep us posted on the board!

#88 4 years ago

Hi all,

I started a new thread regarding the new and improved motor driver board. It can be found here:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/improved-motor-driver-a-15680-for-doctor-who

Thanks @darkpinball for giving me the opportunity to help you with this project!

#89 4 years ago

Wow, this board is now a must have. Just the fact you have up/down independent now is a win. Ulf is correct in saying this board will save many many gearboxes. Great job on this.
