Doctor who "ESCAPE" target help

I just got my first game and was hoping someone could help me with some troubleshooting. Running the test shows "check switch 41,42,43" WHICH ARE THE "E-S-C" letters. The switches seem to be fine and are not closed. The corresponding lights are not lit at startup, but if you hit "A,P, or E". It will light that letter and automatically light E-S-C also. Video mode and special are pretty easy to get when it spots 3 letters. I'm new to pinball and am not really sure what to do other than check the switches. They don't register during diagnostic test. Any help is appreciated- thanks!
