I know there are Street Fighter 2 and Super Mario Brothers games out there. They are not AAA must have games. But video games have come along way since the 90's and are now main stream with budgets that rival blockbuster movies. Do you think this could be the next big craze in pinball? Plenty of good stuff to choose from retro or new.
    Castlevania
    Gears of War
    Halo
    Mega Man
    Zelda
    Metroid
    Etc.
    What are your thoughts?

    #2 6 years ago

There are a few themes that would interest me like GTA. Castlvania has great looks and overall theme I think could work. I lot of the SNES stuff I never got into like Metroid, Mega man, & Zelda.

Why not though...take a shot IF it doesn't cost too much. I'm sure we'd all like to get the taste of SF2 out of our mouths; Pinside's universally hated machine.

I'd like to see pinball machines come out based on nothing but imagination. Older machines were made like this. However, companies are now getting kick back money for advertisement.

Bioshock might be a cool steam punk style theme. Of the ones already mentioned Castlevania seems like it could be done in a cool way. Perhaps the new Netflix show will bring a rise in popularity too.

Oh duh how did i forget that...yes Bioshock would be awesome.

    Pong pinball sounds great!

I like your suggestions and would add:
    Mass Effect
    Luigi's Mansion
    Mario Kart
Batman Arkham Asylum (Can I do that?)

    #8 6 years ago

If a Legend of Zelda pin was released, it would be my first preorder.

    #9 6 years ago

I would totally be in on Duke......

Yes, there are many great themes - especially classic Nintendo. Zelda, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid, Prince of Persia, Resident Evil and even the amazingly weird Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem.

Ha yes that was a good one for sure!

Bioshock Infinite, Assassins Creed, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider, Fallout.

I also think there needs to be some original thinking as well ala Dialed In. Obviously DI missed the mark for some people but I think that a "builder" game would be really good use of the small LCD over banks of drop targets. Make the drop targets represent resources you collect to build your city or castle or space port or whatever. Kind of like a Settlers of Catan pinball. Modes would build larger parts of your city or represent raid or attacks.

Put me down for an Uncharted pin. A modern day IJ would be awesome!!

    #16 6 years ago

Resident Evil, Silent Hill, ....another vote for Fallout, Uncharted, and Tomb Raider.

    #17 6 years ago

Considering the gaming industry is considerably larger and more lucrative than Hollywood, I'm REALLY surprised there haven't been more video game themed pinball machines made.

Bioshock would be an incredible theme to explore in a pinball machine.
A Zelda game in the same "adventure" style as The Hobbit would be the best (and a game I'd easily sell my Kidney to get).
"Portal" could be Tx-Sector 2.0 (Imagine hilarious Wheatly callouts).

A pin based on Castlevania, Mega Man, or Zelda would have my full attention (I often times think SoF would make a great Castlevania retheme). Though in all cases, my interest would be less if they weren't based on the early games. I wouldn't be nearly as interested in a pin based on any modern game (I really like the Uncharted series, but I wouldn't feel as apt to buy a pin version). The noted NES/Famicom games all have stellar soundtracks that would pique my interest before I even see a layout.

Sonic the Hedgehog seems obvious for pinball.

    #19 6 years ago

I'd like to see another attempt at the Super Mario franchise.

    #20 6 years ago

Castlevania has been my vote for years and Ninga Gaiden

    #21 6 years ago

I was thinking a Tetris pinball on the P3 system would be cool. They have already kind of done Asteroids.

    #22 6 years ago

I guess it would only be fair to have a pin based on a video since there is a video game based on pinball (Pinball Arcade). But there are also many video games depicting fantasy pinball games so maybe it would make sense to make a pinball game based on a fantasy video game.

It's because the people over 50 (at Stern) who don't play video games don't realize most men over 50 have been playing video games for over 35 years. It's a sign of Stern not knowing their target market.

Steve Ritchie said in a podcast interview after SM was released that Gary Stern resisted SM as a license because it was too juvenile. Gary doesn't realize what his target market likes.

10 year olds who played GTA for the first time are now in their 30s. COD in their 20s.

Gary is a pretty successful businessman, I think he knows his target audience pretty well lol. Look at all the great themes that Stern has made the last few years. They have been killing it IMO.

My point was regarding video game titles specifically, but SM was an example of his resistence to something he didn't think was within his target audience. We would have never seen XM, IM, or Avengers had SM failed. After the success of ACDC, we're now getting a wave of classic rock bands (despite the flop of RS before that). We won't see a wave of video game titles until they take a chance on one, and it's widely accepted by the community.

I think Zelda would be good. It's old enough to have nostalgia but also modern enough to bring in the younger crowds

    #27 6 years ago

Man I know it would never happen, but I'd love to see a Donkey Kong Country pinball machine. You could have a series of moving barrel cannons that lead to a ball lock or something, a buddy system that allows you to pick any two DKC characters at any given time for unique perks, and of course David Wise could do the music. Man, I'd love to see what kind of music David Wise would write for a pinball machine!

Other themes I think would be cool would be Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Portal, Pokemon (Not a Pokemon fan, but I do really enjoy Pokemon Pinball on GameBoy and it could be really popular with a lot of people), and Oregon Trail.

    #28 6 years ago

I'd love to see a SNES pinball machine where different modes were different classic games

    #29 6 years ago

Golden Tee with an integrated trackball on the apron would be sweet. You could use the trackball while a ball is locked to hit the golf shots for better interaction with the LCD screen on the backbox.

More of an arcade/pinball combo but would be fun

    #30 6 years ago

On the classic side, Robotron 2084, Blaster and even an updated Defender or Stargate

    #31 6 years ago

    No

    #32 6 years ago

    Portal.

    Starcraft.

    #33 6 years ago

I think pretty much all of the suggestions here would be cool, but i would likely only get serious about buying a Castlevania or Metal Gear pin.

Idk, maybe also something like zelda or more RPG style like final fantasy, depending on how it was implemented.

    #34 6 years ago

No! true there are pins based on early vid.games! However, there are many of us that didn't jump on in the beginning!! Myself, only expelled at PM and mastered DK! If given the choice in a lounge to play a video game,or,a old pin thats been there for years, pin every time! Now understand this is relating to us baby boomers,no tats, piercings, elongated ear lobs, green hair, and crap sticking out of your split tongue!!

    #35 6 years ago

I specifically left of Fallout because it has a very barren sandy look to it...and we all saw the anger with the GOT PF

    #36 6 years ago

Surprised no one so far has mentioned Overwatch.

Great, colorful artwork and characters just begging to be made into a pin...

    Later,

Good choice, I don't know what the hell it is but it's huge with all the 20 somethings i work with

    #38 6 years ago

I think Blizzard should license the StarCraft universe for a pin. It would lend itself really well in terms of art and possible modes.

    #39 6 years ago

Or Warcraft. I think Cod not having a pin at this point is pretty crazy. It has to be the biggest franchise in video game history by now, right?

    #40 6 years ago

I think Halo would be a great basis for a pin!

    #41 6 years ago
    Quoted from Anth:

I think the Super Mario Brothers franchise is still the largest selling franchise of all time.

In terms of best selling single video game, I think Minecraft or Tetris probably wins that title.

    #42 6 years ago

We are overdue for a good "Western" theme pin too.

A "Red Dead Redemption 2" pin released along side the game in 2018 would be epic.

    #43 6 years ago

Problem is that Nintendo is incredibly protective of their IP. It'd probably be difficult to license Mario or Zelda pinball machine these days.

I could see JJP doing a Nintendo franchise justice though.

Other developers like Valve or Rockstar have had incredibly popular games that would be very popular, and would probably be more willing to license their IP.

Would be pretty amusing if Half Life 3 came out, but just as a pinball machine.

Overwatch is my oft-named example. The basic gameplay I think would translate into pinball well (payload capture and escort as you advance to the end for the wizard mode). Characters all have unique personalities and could be incorporated in a variety of ways. Given how popular it is, I view it as the low-hanging fruit choice if you want to appeal to modern gamers.

    #45 6 years ago

I'd go with a Legend of Zelda themed game myself. With 30 years worth of games for inspiration could make a solid game story.

3 modes for pendants to unlock the master sword and 4-6 modes to get medallions or treasures with a final game mode of battling Ganon for the Tri-force. To get those it doesn't have to linear but all would need to be collected for the final battle.

Side quests like a video mode to dodge the swarming Cocoos, bombchu bowling, shooting range.

    #47 6 years ago

Uh, not really. Pinball is a whole different universe - no graphics, slower action, and only flippers for controls. A pinball game of GTA would seem pretty lame compared to the actual video game where it's an entire sandbox world with almost unlimited things to do. I would rather video games be video games and pinball be something completely different.

Why what's wrong with cactus canyon? I mean besides incomplete code, low production numbers and outrageous prices

    #49 6 years ago

borderlands would be a perfect theme for the pin, nice combination of action and irreverent humor that would translate well in a pin.

    #50 6 years ago

I totally agree about a Western Theme. I've been pitching, a western game where you play as an outlaw and your score represents the price on your wanted poster. You try to build up your notoriety by robbing banks, outrunning the law, or dueling with rival gangs.
