Saw the mega-millionses is over 500 million so I bought a couple tickets for the group/work pool.

I realize the odds of winning are only slightly higher than not playing at all, but I suppose dreaming of all the things I could do if I/we did win is worth the 10 dollars.

Not really a fan of the scratch offs. There is always someone at the picnic table outside the small town convenience store scratching away at a stack of them though.

Most I won was $100 a year or two back when another big jackpot had accumulated. . . won it on the one ticket with the numbers I picked vs. any from the machine.

I won 12 dollars on powerball. With my business slowly going broke I need to win the lotto.

Giving you an upvote for winning the $12, not for the business part. Hope that can pickup/turn around for you.

I got 3 numbers and a mega ball number once... as I was going over the number and realizing I had matches I envisioned calling my boss and telling him to F-off! Then reality set in and I found out it was only $50 winner... jeesh, ya’d Have thought you’d at least get $500 for that

    #5 1 year ago

$11 was the most I ever won. The lottery is a tax on the mathematically challenged.

    #6 1 year ago

    $4?

A guy in my office won $10k on a scratch off last year. (He may have broken even with that win )

    Quoted from Yoski:

I’ve never heard that said so politely. Usually the lotto is referred to a tax in a less politically correct way.

    I don’t play, I mean, I don’t donate to the lotto.

Here’s a story for you. A couple days ago in Quebec an 18 year old bought a scratch ticket the celebrate their birthday, they won “cash for life” that’s a prize of $1000 a week for life. I think for 20 years.

    #8 1 year ago

Ive never won anything but i only play it two or three times a year. I do however live within a quarter mile of two super lotto winners.......and no i dont live in a rich area either lol. One couple won it like over 30 years ago and he didnt get rich but he got like 30k a year i think and it was enough for him to retire from his job at GM. The other couple was my old bosses niece and her husband. They was basically broke and they hit like 13.4 million. They bought a beautiful home/farm near me and i think they have another vacation home or two in other states as well.

    #9 1 year ago

Thousand bucks on a scratch off. Last years resolution (quit playing lottery ) haven't played in over a year.

    #10 1 year ago

    $1000

    #11 1 year ago

Ive won $500 twice on scratch offs

I got four numbers right on powerball. First four, not five and not the sixth actual power ball number. It was a few years ago. It got me $100 bucks. I bought the multiplier as well which was 3x during that drawing so I got $300 bucks.

I’ve been in charge of our work powerball off and on for years. We are playing together for tomorrow’s drawing.

    Good luck everyone

    #12 1 year ago

Last year I won $1k on a scratch off, now I get to pay $250-$300 in taxes, lol.

    #13 1 year ago

Never played, but I did win $500 on one of those pull tabs you buy at a bar. Bought it on a whim because it went to charity, and I bought everyone at the bar a round of shots.

I read that story yesterday. She bought champagne and a scratch off the article said. What a great story.

My wife's brother in law won $20,000 on the lotto. I won $7 in a office pool when the mega millions was high like this before. Donated the $7 right back in for the next drawing.

I have been selling cars my whole life and that’s all I know. I don’t have much faith that it will get better. My kids and grand da daughter will be gone in a few years and I have lots of life insurance. That is about it for my future plans

    #16 1 year ago

I hit the bonus number on the NJ lottery about 18 years ago. I won $500 and had a 1 in 300 chance of 1 million or many other top prizes but I didn't win. I did get to meet Hella Young though.

You should get a much bigger payout for hitting four numbers IMO.

I'd be for that. I think that is how I won my $100. One more number and the pot would have been $50K.

    Quoted from Yoski:

I agree. Just like some folks only go to church on the holidays, I've only played when the jackpot is big enough to be news worthy.

    #19 1 year ago

I think the payout depends on how many other people had those numbers. The pot may have been $50,000 but divided up between 500 people.

    #20 1 year ago

I used to save my aluminum cans and take them in for cash. I’d spend the money on scratch tickets. I hit $500 three times. Several $100 wins and many $50 wins. This was over a 3 year streak. Then my luck ran out so stopped playing. I do have a cousin that hit $33,000 on a scratch ticket and one lady at my work won 1 million.

    #21 1 year ago

I think they should lower the jackpots and increase payout on on 2nd & 3rd place winners spread the wealth

    #22 1 year ago

I play every so often , I don’t usually win anything. The most I ever won was $100. My wife hates me “wasting” money on a lottery ticket, but I just play for fun and usually it’s only a couple bucks

    #23 1 year ago

This is a completely true story that happened 6 years ago this week......

My wife and I would play the same numbers 9, 19, 34, 44, 51, 24 as a goof every now and again. We never expected to win anything and never did. We didn't play consistently, just every once in a while. One day during my lunch I had to get gas and decided I'd grab a ticket since the jackpot was $350 million plus. I get in line and finally get to the counter and realize I left my cash in my office. In Oklahoma, you can't buy lotto tickets with a card. I didn't think much of it and went back to the office without a ticket and finished out the day.

Found out later that week that those exact numbers hit with no other winners.

We haven't played the lotto since then.

    #24 1 year ago

I play when the jackpot is big and the spirit moves me. Most I've ever won is a couple of 2 dollar winners on scratch offs so my expectations are nil.

    #25 1 year ago

A friend of mine years ago gave his father money to buy numbers. His numbers won and he thought he was a multi millionaire. His father didn’t buy the tickets. He forgot. Dude was so pissed he left the house for good.

    #26 1 year ago

A few decades ago, I think Virginia state lottery, they had a very large Jackpot build up. Back then they had something like 35 choose 7 which "only" gives 6,724,520 combinations. Somehow a group of "investors" manged to buy (almost) every possible combination and won the Jackpot. The Powerball with 5 choose 55 (or whatever that number is up to by now) that scheme won't be possible b/c of the much larger number of combinations.

    #27 1 year ago

50$ on scratches....821$ on keno....if I was playing max bet when I hit on keno it would been over 10gs....

    #28 1 year ago

I wonder if that douche bag from Mad Amusements chimes in.

    #29 1 year ago

There was a local guy who lived in a rundown shack and hit the pick 3 or cash 5 (can’t remember) lotto in Texas in the mid 90s.

He won ~$45k and went straight to the Ford dealership and bought a brand new customized 1994 F150 using just about all of his winnings. He continued to live in that dump for many years and never moved as far as I know. (I’ve seen nicer deer blinds just to put it into perspective)

The saddest part is that his son who has special needs still rode his bike 5-10 miles one way to school and work every day.

Whenever anyone asked the son about the lotto win he would say “my dad won it not me, that’s his money”

    #30 1 year ago

The most I’ve won was $1!!!!!

    #31 1 year ago

Only play if I can win a half a billion dollars. Anything less and it's not worth my time, lol.

I've never won more than a few dollars but one time I did match the first 3 numbers on a Powerball. Let me tell you, my heart skipped maybe one beat until I saw the 4th number didn't match and neither did anything else.

Y'all ever see that video of the group in the convenience store jumping around in excitement upon hitting the winning numbers only to realize that they were looking at the previous drawing so they didn't actually win crap. (I tried to find the video but couldn't). What a horrible feeling that must have been.

Been selling OH lottery thirty five years. 60% Payout by statute. Maybe twice a year our payouts exceed sales. Probably lose my license for saying this but save your change, chumps...

    #33 1 year ago

Many years ago I won $4000 on Lotto 6/49 here in Canada.....I had 5 of 6 numbers correct.
I have been playing the same set of numbers now for 30 years

    #34 1 year ago

Won an extra ball last nite.
    That's about it.

    #35 1 year ago

$20.00, and over many years a lot of free plays.

    #36 1 year ago

I dabble in it now amd then fully knowing I am throwing my money away. But if you don’t play you can’t win, why not dream a little.

    #37 1 year ago
    Quoted from bonzo442:

I agree with you, and so do most folks.....if they don't win. The trouble is when buying, a lot of people are motivated by greedy dreams and they won't buy if the jackpots aren't high. I work in the industry, and it's called "Jackpot Fatigue". The reason they keep changing the odds to make the jackpot harder to hit is so the amounts will keep going up. No one buys at 20 million or even 100 million anymore...they all say "we wait for it to get big before we play"....like 20 mil wouldn't change their lives. You have the same odds per play no matter what the jackpot is....and with fewer players, you are less likely to have to split the prize.

The only smart play is to keep your money in your pocket.

    The tax on stupidity..

My old roommate was always playing the lotto. Once he got all but one number and won like $10k.

I was out surfing when he paddled out and told me. He said he bought a nice VW bus, a new surfboard, and a bag of quality weed with the money.

    #40 1 year ago

I’m in a lottery pool at work, we only play Powerball and Mega when it gets $400 mil +. We hit 5 of 6 numbers and the powerball a few months ago when the jackpot was $500 mil. We were thinking “that’s gotta be worth at least a million!”. Nope. Basically 1-almost a million odds to win $50,000.

    #41 1 year ago

I never play the lottery, but I have won big at the casino on three separate occasions. I used to play poker quite a bit, and we would chase after the bad-beat jackpot whenever the pot got really big. I was sitting at the table and witnessed the bad beat hit five times, and of those five I was one of the two hands involved during three of them, so I got to take 25% of the pot. Twice my share was a little over $20,000, and once it was $25,000, so from those three occasions I won over $65,000 in total. That was back in the 2007-2010 timeframe. I don't play there anymore because they since changed the rules on the bad beat and made it almost impossible to hit. Anyway, once I got into pinball I found that the gambling/poker theme was something I liked so I started collecting those games. I now have World Poker Tour, Riverboat Gambler, Vegas, Monte Carlo, Pistol Poker, and I just picked up a High Roller Casino at TPF last week.

I dont gamble much but the few times i have ive did well.....won 700 on a holder at a bar once... spent it all that night buying the bar drinks lol that was a fun night. Now i just buy project or wpc pins that need some love and it works out nice most of the time.

    #44 1 year ago

    True story:

5 years ago at Christmas one of my vendors gives me ten $10.00 scratch tickets instead of a Christmas bonus (which used to be as high as $1,500 some years) and out of that there's three $10.00 "winners"
    Whatever...
So the winning 3 tickets go in my underwear drawer.
About three months later I'm doing some spring cleaning and the tickets get moved to my van.
A month later I go into dunkin doughnuts, order, reach for my wallet and realize that I left it home. After remembering the 3 tickets in my van, I say, "hold on I'll be right back"
I drop 'em on the lottery counter and the clerk says, "I can't cash this one here. I've never even seen one of these!" and I'm like, "what? I just want my coffee and bagel" and she informs me you have to go to the lottery office to cash the $10,000 ticket...

One of the most important lesson I learned during my probability theory studies: I should never spend money on lottery.

    #47 1 year ago

I don't really play so much for the winnings. I just really want to be on "My Lottery Dream Home", in disguise of course.

    #48 1 year ago

Anyone remember this gem of a thread I started two years ago?

    https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/i-think-i-won-a-sweepstakes-for-an-arcade-game-is-this-legit

Most people here say the lottery is stupid because the chances are so small and don’t play. I took a chance (albeit it cost me nothing) and I won. Most people prob didn’t play saying to themselves that no one ever wins these things, only idiots enter those things, etc.

    #49 1 year ago

Never won more than a few bucks on mega or powerball. I usually lose the tix before I cash them in since I only play when jackpots are really big. I buy for entertainment purposes. Gives me something to think about while I'm driving.

My college freshman son, on the other hand, really hit the Jackpot. He won free pizza for a year from a new franchise in town. He hasn't seen any limits yet, getting as many as 4 a night, and he orders at least one every night.

    #50 1 year ago

No lottery here in good ole Alabama, but I play when I go to other states. I won $50 just over the border in Georgia once. Here's a pretty funny satire article about "Alabama Lotto Players Elementary" just over the border in Tennessee.
