I tend to stay off my phone while walking thus often see one. Be curious how many others are walking while distracted thus don't see past their screen.

I've been leaving my pennies behind for at least 20 years. I don't toss them in the street, as that's essentially littering and I don't want to be responsible for a little kid (or OP for that matter) getting hit by a car in pursuit of a valueless coin. But over the years I've left hundreds of them in little stacks beside registers and outside of convenience stores. I figure a homeless person (or OP for that matter) will pick them up and hopefully get a bit of happiness out of them, and I avoid the annoyance of worthless changing rattling around in my pockets.

On the other hand, I'll definitely stoop for folding money.

Always. I keep a jar just for found money. Best year, 2015. $24.12. $5.43 so far this year. I will probably die being hit by a car while looking down at the ground.

Reminds me of two stories: My gf and my first trip to NYC together in 2006, we stopped at a little hole-in-the-wall to get something for lunch. Upon leaving, right outside the front door on the sidewalk were two $20 bills, with people walking right past them like they were invisible. We looked at each other incredulously and scarfed them right up.

Last summer, a good half-dozen or so people crossed the street before us to get to an estate sale, all of them so intent on getting to the goods first that they passed right by the $50 bill just sitting in the middle of the street. People around us just seem to be completely oblivious to free money.

I think they are all in the US. I keep finding them in my change.

My grandparents all lived through the Great Depression and had some horrific stories to tell. I think its their spirits that still get me to pick up pennies on the ground.

Pennies don't exist for us anymore. No for nickels and dimes. Usually no for quarters. Sometimes yes for loonies and toonies ($1 & $2) unless they are muddy / dirty.

I figure that I'm a grown ass adult (in theory) that can make my own money, and I figure found money is way more exciting for a kid or maybe someone hard up for luck, so I usually leave it be for someone else to find anyways.

One time at a bar I found a thick wad of bills, 20s,50s,100s, I figured like 500 or 1000 bucks
(it didn't feel right counting someone else's money) . I turned it in to the bartender to find the owner, pretty sure the bartender became the new owner though.

I started playing pinball a few years ago, and that’s when I started picking up quarters.

A quarter isn’t worth much, but a game of pinball is.

This reminds me of my grandfather. He worked as a milkman delivering dairy products door to door back in the 1950s and early 60s, always looking at the ground while walking. He kept his finds in cigar boxes and just kept adding to them. In one of the cigar boxes were Morgan silver dollars, Peace dollars, Walking Liberty half dollars, a large number of smaller denomination silver coins, old nickels, several mill coins, and lots and lots of pennies. IIRC, the oldest coin in the cigar box was an 1881 Indian Head penny. I still have one of the cigar boxes, though back in 1979 during the silver spike he cashed in a full cigar box of junk silver coins--all finds. So yeah, I'll pick up a penny.

If it's around a store where kids can get candy type stuff, I leave it.

In my business, I try to figure whose it is and return it.

Anywhere else it's free money. Unless I see someone drop it.

In a casino with lots of cameras. Pick it up, walk over to a trash can, make like you are throwing it in. Done.

Any claims later you threw out a wrapper. Security may look into it if someone claims they lost it, or saw you pick it up and claim it's theirs.

I pick up all change I find. People at give me change when they clean their lockers out and I pull change out from underneath snack machines. On average it takes about 3 years for me to fill a 5 gal water jug. Not a bad pay day.

Yes, always pick up the pennies -- always look forward to trips to the big city with the Mrs. cause I usually find the big money (silver coins) on the ground there.

In a parking lot, in a store, at the movie theatre, etc. I have no shame. I also still hop on the shopping cart and ride it back to the car in the parking lot. Let onlookers think what they will.

I've always wondered though. . . what if there was money on the floor in the bank? You can't pick up a candy bar off the floor in a store and call it yours; that is still considered stealing. If you pick up ground money in the bank is that considered robbing it?

Quarter.....eh if my hands are free, my back isn't hurting, etc. Yeah I'd bend over and pick it up

One of my jobs in college was working an overnight shift at the Veterinary Hospital. Each night I'd look under all the vending machines and more often than not came away with a dollar or more each time. Having long arms came in handy.

I consider the labor cost versus the cash obtained before proceeding with any task.

Years ago, in high school and college, I worked at an amusement park. I was a rides supervisor, which meant I just walked around making sure the ride ops were checking seatbelts and making sure they weren’t letting the hot chicks jump the queue, but we were always supposed to walk around with a broom and dustpan to help the park keep clean.

I’d collect all the change that would fall out of people’s pockets on rides, and I would usually end up with about an extra $10 in change each night. One ride would hold people upside down. That was a goldmine for loose change.

I'm still slim enough and agile enough that I don't need such a device.

On another note, we used to check every dime, quarter, and half dollar in the change we got to see if they were 1964 or prior before putting them in any coin operated machine or spending them.

Not many of those left in circulation. Now it's all about pre 1982 pennies.

I have one of those myself. Bought from the Johnson Smith Co. Catalog in the mid-'70's. Paid 59 cents for it. Real ones were worth aboot $10k back then.

Found a crisp $100 bill under the leg of my stool while sitting at a slot machine. A really old lady had been playing next to me for a long time, but got up and moved before I found it. She was playing with cash out of bank envelope, so I was pretty sure it was hers. Casino worker found her. I asked her if she had possibly lost any money. She starts counting her crisp $100s. I knew it was hers so gave it to her. Casino worker told me I should have just kept it. Ha! If I had no idea whose it was, I would have.
