Well, thank you for what you do! It takes a special kind of person to want to work in the field of medicine. I know I'm generalizing, but I could not do it.

Thanks guys, but it's nothing special really...just my job, and anyone could do it if I can do it. I guess the emotional component of it and the ability to see some crazy stuff is what sets us apart (I have seen people nearly faint at the sight of certain things that I find fascinating...I'm weird like that).

Oh, and yes, people tend to have heart attacks in the middle of the night, haha. I would have been only call every 4th night and work 1 weekend a month. In my field, I work 7-day work blocks every other week, with two PTO weeks, so I literally only work 24 weeks a year - plenty of time for pinball and other interests!

Just passed some pretty aggressive laws in Ca. Today. Kids won’t be able to go to school without current shots & they can raid your home and seize your kids due to non compliance.

Mandatory adult vacs. may be around the corner too...

I'm surprised you are not required to get the flu shot since you are in a direct patient care environment. Hopefully they make you wear a mask at all times. Not for your safety but for that of your patients.

If you don't want to pay for a flu shot you can just lick the door handle at a public restroom.

What exact SB # are you referring to? I missed the headlines about children being seized over non vaccination....unless they are immigrants of course.

Most (all?) states' vaccination laws won't let your kid attend school without current vaccinations or a legally viable alternative (which of course varies by state). I don't think anything's changed on that front recently in CA. CA did pass new laws in 2015 that limited to only medical exemptions (like Mississippi and W. Virginia have done for many years), but that's just changing the types of excuse they'll accept, not the consequence for not complying.

The new law AB262 that you just posted is about the State's ability to respond to actual outbreaks, presumably including mandatory vaccination orders in specific areas suffering an outbreak, as happened in Brooklyn with their recent Measles outbreak. This is not directly related to school vaccination requirements.

There is also a separate new CA law that allows the State to review medical exemptions in districts with low vaccination rates, and provides for canceling bogus exemptions (W. Virginia has this in place already). But again, no change to the general requirement that you follow the vaccination rules if you want your kid to go to public school.

I couldn't find anything about taking kids away from their parents. But it's possible that parents could be punished if they refuse to vaccinate, their kids can't attend public school, and then they don't home school or provide some alternative education. Has that happened anywhere yet?

My son spent two days in intensive care with influenza when he was 5. Without highly expensive modern technology he would not be with us today. Essentially a ventilator was doing his breathing for him because he no longer had the energy to breath for himself. A very sobering thought. The flu vaccine is not a magic bullet but it substantially lowers your risk, whether young or old.

In response to an epidemic, maybe (assuming there aren’t other laws or constitutional protections that would prohibit it). But the law you’re talking about has nothing to do with school vaccination requirements.

Not in this instance. In this case you have a sect of Hasidic Jews endangering the health of people they live around and interact with, not just themselves. I’m a fierce advocate of religious freedom, but how would you feel if your kid got sick or died because one group felt they shouldn’t take this very successful measles vaccine. I believe an Israeli airline attendant died for this very reason. No one should have the right to endanger others, religious beliefs or not.

I know, but the language of the outbreak bill could be used against non vac children who I’m sure will be tracked and kept in some database via sb276. What constitutes an outbreak? 2-3 cases in your area before they come knocking?

Lots of parents protesting the capital all week, flying in from all over the country. These aren’t wacky hippie parents either..regular middle/upper class six figurine folks ..seen some rumblings in Tx. as well.

See, I don't see where you are endangering others. The vaccine is available. If you want it get it then you are not endangered by me not getting it even if I were to get the disease. I, for one do not trust the government in any form or fashion at any level. They are no different than Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, or any other socialist or communist regime. I refuse to put anything in my body that the government tells me I have to.

No, never. They never seem to be effective and id rather not put that poison in my body. Last year my wife and daughter both got the flu... and they both got their flu shots.

I've never gotten a flu shot in my entire life, and probably haven't had the flu in the last 20 years. I figure I'll build up tolerance while the rest of the herd inoculates themselves.

The point of the thread in the first place was in light of eggbert52 dying from complications due to the flu. Its possible that if he had gotten the shot, his symptoms would have been manageable enough to live through it. Its a personal preference though.

I absolutely do, every year in October. As an aside, I was recently told by my doctor to get the new/ improved shingles vaccine now that I am 60. I guess this one is way more effective.

The point being that in the case where government wants to infringe upon the rights of the citizen as granted by the constitution, the 2nd Amendment authorizes/encourages a militia via armed citizens to ensure that freedom. If it ever seriously came to the point where government forcibly entered into one's private property (again, a potential violation of the 3rd & 4th Amendments), I have no doubt that there would be an uprising of citizenry to fight against it.

Well, I would say that if you are in poor health otherwise, then you may should seriously consider a flu shot given your overall risk. It is kind of a running joke on one of the radio stations here every time a flu victim is reported. The radio personality always asks 2 questions: 1) how old were they?, and 2) did they have other medical issues? Inevitably, the victim is always either elderly (e.g. 80+) or suffered from some other serious medical condition before they also contracted the flu.
