I got my kids to start doing it.

In my job, Im primarily outside most of the day, when I get home I don’t want to go mow grass. I usually mow, but it’s so nice when I get someone to do it for me.

    #55 5 years ago

My first mower. 7 “speed” belt drive. Was actually dangerous because if you yanked the wheel at its top speed you’d flip it over. Had a replacement 14 hp Briggs Vanguard on it. Great motors because they’re basically Kawasaki’s.

Well you're obviously more of a man than me!
Here's the thing. I mowed my lawn for 15 years, and for some of that time, I had a 30 minute commute. Now it's 1:40. That's 10 fewer hours of disposable time I have a week. $15/hour to spend with my family, play pinball, whatever is well worth it to me.
It comes down to how much you value your time and how rewarding or enjoyable it is for you. You obviously derive some amount of machismo from this exercise, so good on you, but don't judge others as being lazy because I work awfully hard in order to afford little luxuries like this.

It all depends on a persons situation. If you work 10 or 12 hours a day then i understand you not cutting your own grass, unless your yard only takes 30 minutes to.mow or something, then id say cut your grass yourself probably. I know guys that work 3 days a week and their wife cuts the grass while they sit inside and play video games. I know several guys that will not cut the grass period and their wife does all the yard work. Sorry but they are lazy pieces of shit and i can't believe that their wife even stays with them, i bet they're too lazy to wipe their own ass also.

Now there's also nothing wrong with a woman cutting the grass either but i can tell you right now that i would feel pretty bad if i was too lazy to cut the damn yard and my wife had to do it. At the same time theres also nothing wrong with helping your wife do laundry or clean up a little either. I'm pretty old school and im proud of it, thats not a character flaw at all in my opinion. We need more old school people in this world.

Just bought a 42" Cub Cadet XT2 and cut my new place (about 2.4 acres overall, 1.5 or so of grass). Big difference from the 1/10 of an acre house that I am in the process of moving from. All the neighbors keep asking if I am going to hire somebody but I like cutting my own grass. A few beers and tunes and life is good.

    #61 5 years ago

Absolutely, I mow my own..... 8 acres with a John Deere commercial grade zero turn. It s a great time to be alone with your thoughts. Better yet, no thoughts!

Also just for the record i f*cking hate cutting the yard. I also work shift work and i only get one weekend a month off. I work lots of 12 hour shifts and all holidays including Christmas even so i may have even less time than you do to cut the yard. Its not about being a big tough man or being macho, its just my responsibility as a property owner and something im not willing to pay someone to do.

    #64 5 years ago

They do everything they can to discourage water use let alone grass in yards in nor cal. A quick mow is it.
I’d get glares if I came within a foot of a John Deere around these parts.

I’m jealous of your kind, and your planet too.

Two sides of my property have large drainage ditches and I have to do them with the self propelled push mowers which is hard on the knees. That part I don’t enjoy. That’s why I miss my hydro Scag walk behind. Would’ve made it much easier.

I get it, but saying you mow your yard because you're not lazy or disabled kind of implies what you think of those who don't.

I can sympathize with not wanting to pay people to do certain things. I have never paid movers or paid someone to do my taxes (don't even pay for TurboTax or anything) and I'd sooner get a root canal than valet park. That will never change, but when I'm too old I'll have to pay movers

    kinda do half and half.
If I can find good help; I have them rake and mow. My issue is only the supervisor can speak english then that supervisor doesn't come with the crew.. so we can't communicate that we want x, y, z done because I live in America ... and English should be the primary/only language used in this country.

However, I've been less that successful finding reliable yard specialists; so I just did the first mowing of the spring on Friday. I have a 15-20yr old self propelled mower that still barely runs.
I need someone to come rake my Live oak leaves badly... but yeah; we'll see. I need to find a good gas powered edger.

If I can't find anyone to rake and do the mow this season... I'm probably going to get a robot mower so I can wash my hands of the job.
I gotz pinball projects to do.

Well im probably thinking of the people that i know that wont cut their yard and just getting an attitude about it and venting truthfully. I actually tell them that they are lazy and that they should be embarrassed that their wife cuts the yard 100% of the time. I mean seriously, thats pathetic im sorry.

There's nothing wrong i guess if a guy has the money to afford that luxery or if he doesn't have the time for whatever reason. Theres just certain things that i personally wont pay people to do i guess. Heck if i was wealthy i would probably go ahead and pay someone to do it and sit on the patio and drink beer and watch him lol. Truthfully I've worked my ass off since i was 15 years old, i probably should take a break and pay someone to do it. Im too hard headed though i guess.

Between mowing the grass for my folks and myself I mowed grass for over 25 years. One day when I almost flipped my rider over on a berm I said “enough of this bullshit”. I’ve used a service ever since and have never given it a second thought. My yard is a pain in the ass to mow, it would take me 2.5-3 hours. I have better ways to spend my weekends. Shoveling the driveway on the other hand I love for some reason.

    Quoted from gliebig:

I love riding the mower around and cutting the grass. So much so that I cut the common area in the neighborhood. They give me $75/hr. (I'd have done it for free.)

When I lived in a townhouse just out of college I mowed the grass with a push mower. Quick and easy.

When I had an acre in my 20s I paid someone $60 for each mow and blow. Being self-employed and motivated I could make more than $60 for the time it would take me to do it, not to mention the tractor maintenance.

Now in my 30s, with kids and about 1.5 acres in FL where things grow year round, I pay $260 a month for full service and it's worth it. A full crew does the mowing, blowing, weeding, bush trimming, spraying, dead palm frond removal and I can either be working or around the pool with the kids.

I've had discussions about this with other guys who scoff and say "oh you can do that because you have money to do that" but yet they are usually the ones with new cars, new technology gadgets, cable TV, etc. which I have none of. Some people just value money and time differently. Though I'm still a lucky guy.

One of the nice things about that Steiner Tractor in the first picture is the mower deck detaches and a snow plow (or snow blower) can be hooked up. Or you can do like I do and have a second tractor to mount the plow on.

    IMG_7106 (resized).JPGIMG_7106 (resized).JPG

But I digress, this thread is about grass, not snow.

    #77 5 years ago

I gave it up last summer. Yeah, I'm still young but with major elbow issues, the constant vibration really makes it worse. Plus, I have no issue paying the kid across the street $20 to cut it every 2 weeks. No need to store a mower/trimmer/blower, whatever. I don't even need a gas can or garbage bags, I mean really, its a no brainer

Anyone here have a real push mower similar to this one? I have two. One is an old Craftsman that is chrome plated.

My late Dad used to sharpen these type of lawn mower blades for side money. He bought a new lawn mower sharpener from Rogers Equipment Company in Lindsey, Ohio in the early 1950's.

I mow about 1.2 acres with a John Deere D170 (54 inch deck), string trim and blow and it takes ma about 2 hours total once per week. I would hang my head in shame if I had my wife doing this. On the flip side she will burn a hole through my skull if I dare touch the dishwasher or laundry. Seriously! That being said, I once found myself in a position where it was impossible for me to mow for a few weeks. I got a price from the crew I saw doing my neighbor's spot. Quoted me $150. So that's 75/hr if I do it myself. I left it grow tall that time because I refuse to believe its worth that much money. I wish I knew where some of the guys are getting their prices from I see in this topic. Everyone where I live charges stupid high prices for everything.

That seems kinda high. I do alot /mostly downtown yards so no super big yards and they usually take 20-45 min with weed eating and blowing off the walkways. I only charge 10-30 bucks per and i average 30-35 a hour when all said and done after cost and taxes. I cld probably charge more but i have a good rep and try to help people out on cost which is why i have over 50 properties and get more and more every week it seems lol.

For my new place (Annapolis MD) I was quoted what I thought was a lot of money (several grand for the season). Granted, it is a lot of grass and it is hilly, but for 1800 I got a shiny new tractor and some good guaranteed me-time every week. Added a dump cart and have used it non stop the past few weeks for hauling debris, lumber, rocks, firewood--you name it--while we get this place ready to move in. Plus, my 10 year old daughter loves driving it. Money well spent!

I mow my 5 acres with a diesel Kubota tractor and 60” mid mount deck. I can clear some grass pretty quick. Its awesome.

I thoroughly enjoy my garden and growing flowers, edibles, etc.
I hate this whole lawn mowing concept.

Ive been mowing lawns for 45 years! Id prefer if I could at least eat, display, or smoke the cuttings!

(I have tried many other ground covers)

    #88 5 years ago

Mowing the lawn was one of my chores growing up and I hated it. My dad would never spring for a decent mower.
I’m more than happy to pay someone else to mow my lawn and keep the yard looking nice. If I had to do it myself I would have bought a condo.

I miss those days. I loved being a lazy bastard. Since my wife went back to work after having the baby, my day consists of waking up at 6:30am to take care of my 9 month old son, dropping him off at sister in laws around 4pm where my wife picks him up around 6pm, then I go to work until 3am. Sleep when I can and on my days off. Yard upkeep is not on my radar.
