For some reason Chicago Coin games yellowed like no other. I wonder if they used some type of clearcoat on their cabinets? I see the mean grean in the background is it putting a dent in it.
Saw this game listed and even with the yellow cab it seemed like a good buy.
Haha yea I snatched it up as soon as I saw it. The market here is rough in Milwaukee for Pinballs at least craigslist wise. I figured Id grab it since it was a decent deal.
We bought a SEVERELY yellowed Atlantis form a guy who bought it from a local arcade in 1984. Yes, he was a heavy smoker. We Mean Green'd the base cabinet and decided to leave the head yellow. I use it to show smokers what their lungs look like and to show other people the kind of work that goes in to restoring these things (or at least de-nastifying them 
By the way, if you didn't already know, Mean Green (from the dollar store or walmart) absolutely dissolves nicotine. Spray it on and watch (and smell) the nastiness just drip down the sides.

I changed the blue color because I liked the look better.
Also the playfield was really darkened. We think heat was the cause of all this...

That's a total repaint, a repro backglass, and a Wade Krause repro playfield. All new bumper parts, flipper parts, and drop targets. Can't remember off the top of my head but I might have put new siderails on it too. The coin door is not a new one, but the coin entrance plate and striker plate are.
Anyone have good luck with novus 2 on these older machines for cleaning? I was going to novus 2 the field then wax with carnuba wax. Just trying to see what everyone else would attempt. I am assuming its safe the clean the metal top areas of the play field (where the cards go etc) with regular water/soap?

Recently I've been using Novus 2 on my EM playfields, but only after cleaning. Then I wax over the Novus with Mother's Carnauba Wax (no cleaners).
Be careful cleaning the metal card tray and upper arch if they have webbing on them. I don't know about Chicago Coin games, but the webbing on Gottlieb card trays comes off very easily. Whatever method you use, try it on a small area first.

Thanks for the reply, what are you cleaning it with before the Novus 2? I will try to get a picture of the playfield it might have webbing I am not really sure.
I try to use the least aggressive cleaning method necessary, depending on the type and degree of dirt. I also take the playfield's general condition into consideration. Always vacuum clean the surface first with a brush attachment to suck up anything potentially abrasive before starting.
I don't like to use any water-based cleaners if there's a lot of planking or worn to the wood areas on the playfield. If there's a lot of old wax build-up holding the dirt, I will try 91% alcohol and gauze pads. To remove swirl marks, I'll use Magic Eraser pads either with alcohol or Castrol Super Clean. If the playfield is just lightly dirty and in good condition otherwise, it might just need some Simple Green solution and a toothbrush to get it clean. Experience will eventually guide you. There's lots if products and methods available. Go easy first.
All Chicago Coin games w/ white paint turn that color- it's not 100% ciggy smoke residue, it's a chemical change in the paint. By the time it looks white, you have just the tiniest film of paint left (as you have undoubtedly discovered). I will repaint my Hula Hula, someday.......................

I use semi gloss polycrylic on all my repaints, not just for protection, but also to even out the sheen of the paint job. It works great.
When I do a playfield, I use ME and 91 percent alcohol, then Novus 2, then wax. Be careful with the ME, if you go too hard, the paint will go too. If you're careful you'll get a great looking playfield as long as it is in decent shape to start.
I've pretty much given up on lower aprons and upper arches that have webbing on them. Quite often they are rusted enough that it's easier to just repaint them and use a decal from Pinballrescue in Australia. Lee and Gordon do a great job on those decals. I don't worry about trying to re-web those anymore.

Is the semi-gloss polycrilic used for playfield or cabinet? Sorry, I'm having a hard time tracking. What brand of paint do you use and where do you buy it? Just like finding out what other guys are using. Thanks!

I generally use Montana paint.
