I tested volts going in and according to 'ninja' I get good readings. If the dmd has lines fading can I then assume it is the dmd and just replace it? or is there something else to test?

I'd say it's a pretty good chance the display is bad.
But, that leaves 'lines fading' open to interpretation, which could be bad.
Displays 'roll' when the voltages are fine, but caps are drying up in wpc games.
Any chance of a picture, or short youtube video, to confirm what exactly it's doing?

couldnt get a video but maybe this picture will show what I was trying to explain.. the top of each word has missing lights. it looks like it is "cut off". also the borders are not complete. some of the lights are out. so with that and the voltage testing correctly, are there caps and rectifiers i should check or should i just buy a new dmd? thanks, yo...

p.s. when I got this machine the dmd went out after one day. the guy was nice enough to take it back (the dmd) and someone did some board work. just not sure what was done. (i guess i could tell by looking at the board.) at that time i did have a bally that i swapped to see if it was the vishay and it wasnt. dont have that capability today..
I had something similar with a Junkyard. I replaced the big capacitors on the display board and that fixed it. You may want to put another dmd in first to see if that is the problem. Then you may want to replace the caps.

That happened to me on my JD and it was the DMD.

What? The DMD, regardless of who made it, will work in all of your DMD games you have in your collection.
The easiest would be to plug the DMD into the TZ since it is easy to get to and is only 2 connectors. Make sure you hold the DMD by the board edges when you have power to the machine. This way you can confirm it to be a bad DMD or not. Or you can swap the DMD controller board to the TZ with ease as well.
To me, it does look like the DMD is outgassing, so verifying that will confirm it.
ColorDMD supports all your DMD games, and it looks stunning in the LOTR by the way in the "gold" color in sigma mode. Graphics are amazing.

As long as the Stern DMD is a plasma display vice LED display used in the newer games.

can i assume my games have those kinds of displays or is there a way to verify what type they are? thanks for your time chris.

Yes, that is true. I do not have any of the new Stern machines.
You can post a picture of either the one in Lord of the RIngs or World Poker Tour, then we can tell you if it is the same plasma DMD.

thanks guys.used my wpt. definitely the dmd. i swear when I got NGG originally and the dmd had an issue (that turned out to be the board) someone on here said I could only test with a bally or williams dmd. guess i got bad info.
Quoted from yoshootme:guess i got bad info.
There is a lot of good info that can be found here...and occasionally some not so good.

Quoted from PinballManiac40:If you have the money, consider installing a ColorDMD into the Lord of the Rings and move that DMD over to NGG.
Here are a couple of screen shots someone took in Sigma mode, which is high resolution.
It looks great!!!how much do those things cost?
