I just finished my Maverick dmd extender build and wanted to post a few items that may help someone who's going to attempt this. First off, thanks to everyone who made this happen - such a great final product and a really fun build.

For the controller board, I originally ordered this:

ebay.com link: itm

I never got to use it because it started in China and got routed all over the US for 3 weeks by USPS. Because I have no patience, I used the advice of winteriscoming above (thank you) and ordered this last week (US seller):

http://kenode.com/hdmi-vga-av-lcd-controller-board-with-usb-port-for-media.html

Andy from the Kenode store was excellent and programmed the board for my screen (LP173WF1) and sent it out immediately. I also ordered this:

ebay.com link: itm

I received both items in 2-3 days and they worked perfectly. The controller board also came with a remote control, which the eBay China one did not. After hooking up everything, I changed the default language from Chinese to English and the input to HDMI (on the controller board) and it worked flawlessly.

I may be making this sound a little easier than it is, but if anyone has trouble with their build just post in this thread or pm me and I'd be happy to help if I can.

I haven't played around with the colors yet, but the default ones look great. Very happy with the results and it's a great feeling to be plasma free (on this game at least)!

Here are some pics of my Maverick along with the color scheme I chose. Very happy with the results!

Quoted from Pondwater:

Looks great. Did you have problems mounting it in the Maverick? I had a hell of a time with mounting it in LW3. The problem was the plastic speaker panel because it has slight curve to it.

I didn't have any issues at all with the mounting on Maverick as the speaker panel and plastic are completely flat. I remember reading where someone else had an issue with a curved speaker panel (on a Sega showcase).

Quoted from Rock914:

I was working on my MSF (jumbo dmd) and cannot get the dots in the right position. I ordered the correct parts from this thread. I just need to adjust the screen down about 3". I would appreciate any help.

Try these settings :

DMD Position: 115
Border Top: -50 (already mentioned by Pondwater)
Border Bottom: -50 (already mentioned by Pondwater)

These were given to me by David at Drpinball. I had a similar problem (DMD window is not fully utilized, still has maybe 1" on top and bottom unused) and was told you couldn't fill the whole screen with the large DMD. I haven't spent more time digging to see if I could trick it into filling the whole screen just because it looks great (and I'm busy shopping the game out). I didn't think a setting under -50 (like -60) did anything, but Pondwater mentioned it worked for him.

Also, make sure your monitor is set to 16x9 and not 4x3 to maximize the useable screen size.

Quoted from Chrlbrwn88:

I changed the border settings on my MSF and it now fills the entire screen. Just make sure all settings are correct and add negative value to the border that needs adjustment.

Great to know it worked for you, thanks. It must be a setting on my controller board that I need to change because anything over -50 doesn't seem to do anything. There's plenty of monitor space left at the bottom and top so there must be a way to make it fit the entire real estate (that the old DMD occupied). It's close, but still some space left (at the top and bottom, no issue on the sides).

This of course wouldn't be an issue if it was the standard size dmd.

Quoted from ALY:

Really good topic.
Before I order it... How it this LCD panel mounted behind the backglass?
Any pics maybe?

For the large Sega display, you can look at the pdf on drpinball (application note 1) which is where you purchase the dmd extender. It has lots of pics and a few on how the LCD panel is mounted:

Quoted from Crash:

Was David actually selling a kit at one point?

I saw the kits on there when I purchased my dmd extender about a month ago - but they showed shipping only in the UK.

Quoted from 2Kaulitz:

i have ordered my setup and its going in a FREDDY pinball. just got figure out how to power it.

I got your pm and thought I'd post the answer here in case someone else had the same question.

Dr Pinball provides a power cable with the dmd extender that you use to "double up" one of the power connectors (mine was CN2 on the sound board for Sega) and goes to the "power in" connector on the dmd extender board. You also should order the LCD install kit from dr pinball (separate item) which has another power cable that connects into the dmd extender (the "power out" slot) to power the interface board.

If you look at the application notes found here it will probably make more sense, plus there are some pics:

Quoted from 2Kaulitz:

he has no power cable for gottlieb games yet. But i did get wpc one that i'm sure can be adapted.

Yeah, the power connector with the kit for the controller board will work perfect so it'll be just a matter of finding a Gottlieb power connecter to use and double checking the wiring on the connector going into your game. There are only 3 wires, so it shouldn't be a big deal if you have to move one or more of the wires.

Quoted from grbgemen:

The resolution on the second auction is 1600x900 but same model number, no?. Perhaps a mistake? Yes I realize the price is only a $10 difference. The seller in the second auction also excepts best offer. Perhaps these screens can be had less?

Here's one of my posts from this thread on my Maverick install and what I used:

https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/diy-addams-family-poor-mans-color-dmd/page/6#post-1845923

(I read that) several people have tried lower resolution displays and commented that they weren't happy with the results. I wouldn't risk it for a few dollars. You're right though, these screens can be had for less. I checked Amazon after I purchased mine and found some for less, although I can't comment on whether or not they were identical replacements (or knockoffs, etc.).

I generally always look around for a better deal too but if I'm not familiar with model number variances (like you're pointing out above) I'll stick with the tried and true so I'm not stuck with something I can't use.

Good luck with your build, I've got tons of compliments on my finished product!
