Seeing the results of this, I'm a bit torn.
On one hand, I want to support ColorDMD. I want them to sell displays so that they will colorize more games. I don't mind paying the extra money for a single color display now given the possibility of upgrading to full color down the road. I also like the simplicity. Just install it and use it.
This approach is more work, but the cost is very attractive. Plus, I'd love to play around with the color mapping part of it. If I didn't have too much other stuff going on already, I'd be tempted to go down this road myself, just to experiment with it.
I kinda wish that ColorDMD would add the option of color mapping to Sigma. I would assume it would only make sense in dots mode, though. I've asked them twice now to add a RGB color selector rather than the 49 color options, with no results, so I wouldn't expect to see 5 RGB selectors any time soon.
