Quoted from o-din:

Mom is 98 years old and in assisted living and they sent me the consent form last week. Would you have me say no to them? Sure it's a risk, and I'm on pins and needles about it as covid has already gone thru there twice with her never testing positive.
As far as your science, they are already saying getting vaccinated does not prevent you from being a contagious carrier anyway and are unsure how long any immunity lasts. Where's the herd immunity in that? And if I am or was exposed already, which in my line of work I'm almost certain I was, I'm already part of your herd.
Anyway, to keep this on topic, I miss Pluto and his antics as they are way more entertaining than all these armchair scientific expert guilt trippers here.

Sorry. ACTUAL scientist guilt-tripper here.

Looks like they will do it well in the spirit of Marc Davis and his sensibilities ....
They will not link it to the movie but will make the story line throughout the ride a more linear narrative.

I'm always game for updates. I know the overzealous cultural sensitivity by Disney is sometimes just so reactive that it seems to offend people in its attempt to please everyone ......but the kids will never notice ...

I welcome the changes being made to Jungle Cruise. I think it'll still hold the spirit of the original ride and it won't lose any of the Disney magic.

#805 3 years ago

Next thing you know there will be no more "Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah" on Splash Mountain or "Take a Wench for a Bride" on Pirates of the Caribbean.

Oh wait....

Nobody gives a shit about this stuff but cranky old people.

The kids couldn't care less.

#809 3 years ago

I’d like to erase some of my history

#810 3 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

You gleefully erase history almost every night with Jack Daniels according to recent posts, so what's the problem?

Not sure why kids are supposed to give a shit about the history of Disney rides. They just go there to have fun. If you don't get that you are probably too cranky to enjoy Disney parks any more.

#811 3 years ago

My history is getting erased, one post at a time.

No they aren't! They are just getting refreshed for a new generation!

I once told my daughter if there is any attraction at any of these amusement parks that you really like, enjoy them while you can because they may be gone tomorrow. Used to be that was because of their limited space.

Oh, and we all loved Splash Mountain and The Jungle Cruise just the way they were. What they did in California Adventure really broke her heart as she went there in the beginning. But she got over it. I think. I'm still not good with what they did to Tomorrowland, but that was Disney on a budget if you can imagineer that.

#814 3 years ago

Stated this before in another thread but needs to also be in this Disney thread...

I've always thought they should do "Walt Disney World" under glass. It can incorporate all of their major 4 Disney World theme parks, the rides can be both incorporated onto the playfield along with the LCD of a POV while being on that particular ride. They have iconic characters, rides, themes, songs etc.

-Represent the 4 major parks:
Epcot
Animal Kingdom
Hollywood Studios
Magic Kingdom
-Characters galore Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Chip N Dale, Figment etc...
-Carousel of progress the backboard or backbox can change rotate scenes from different time periods
-Spinning "tea cups" / pops that interact with the ball
-Cinderella's Castle multiball / bridge.
-Spiel call outs from the attractions / narrations .... "Mr Morrow, Paging Mr. Tom Morrow...."
-Midway Toy Story ring type game can be played on LCD with flippers / button on lockdown bar
-Jungle Cruise audible call outs / jokes,
-Expedition Everest Yeti interacts with the ball.
-Animal Kingdom Tree of Life mode (collect animals to light up tree)
-Space Mountain mode playfield has a star effect / LEDs
-Dumbo can magically lift the ball / flly to a different area of the playfield.
-Inverted loop for the Aerosmith Rock N' Rollercoaster
-Travel obtain countries / inserts from The world showcase at EPCOT,
-Mini Animatronics type small world characters
-Monorail around 7 seas lagoon can carry the ball.
-Parades / Fireworks / Lighting LCD / LED's
-EPCOT Living with the land backdrop of LCD video as you collect things on that mode (presented by chiquita banana)
-Tower of Terror Twilight Zone flippers flip reversed
-The Haunted Mansion can easily create peppers ghost effect (dancing ghosts) on the playfield / LED creepy lighting.
-Incorporate TRON roller coaster mode
-People Mover, (Pinball Mover™) can act as ramp / wireform
-Unlock RETRO retired rides like Mr. Toad & 20,000 Leagues under the sea LCD POV Ride footage

That isn't true. If you visit the blogs and really SEE what the kids are saying, you would be surprised.

So, they aren't as stupid and gullible as some would have us believe? There is hope for the future after all!

#817 3 years ago
Quoted from mrclean:

I LOVE this idea. Obviously for me to buy it the game would have to play great, because I had to stop buying on just theme along a while ago. But this could be a such a great theme. The difficult part is that the park experience is different for us all. And putting it together in a way that I am nostalgic about would be a different game for all the different players. I'd want the whole upper playfield to be the Carousel of Progress, the ball launch to be the "old" opening of Spaceship Earth, and I'd want to hear the Dapper Dans half the time, and "There's a great big beautiful tomorrow" the other half, and the third half would be the background from Horizons (this game needs three halves because it will be STACKED). And of course the backglass will need to be the 25th anniversary Cake Castle.

I'm not so sure a few people on a forum or Blogs are really representative of the numbers who will enjoy the attraction in the years to come.
I think the outrage over the perceived political correctness of Disney is kind of funny. They need to appeal to the present and future with a nod to the past. I think more people could possibly benefit from this mindset
I have said this before ....I love Disneyland as it was ....many great memories .....but Disney always has to default to an overly sensitive position...people put a lot of cultural trust in Disney from all over the world.
We as adults and as people who lived through these changes understand the context of the original attractions ....they weren't racist intentionally. But if it quacks like a duck....context has changed and continues to.

I can't wait until they do away with Mickey Mouse. You can change his appearance all you want, but if it squeaks like a mouse....

#820 3 years ago

They aren't getting rid of the Jungle ride just changing some of the appearance. I am confident they don't show that version you linked of Mickey mouse anymore.
I remember a commercial with Fred and Barney from the Flintstones hawking lucky strikes
Currently not a popular product placement ....
Things change. Ties get thinner and thicker. Pant legs etc... Sensibilities change. Unless it is really objectively representing a historical moment and offers a larger lesson or stand alone work of art (Huckleberry Finn) no reason not to change with the times.

#821 3 years ago

On The Jungle Cruise, they are probably getting rid of the shrunken heads and that is just insulting as I don't know anybody that could find any way to be offended by those. But, they are out there, I am sure. Probably spend a lot of time at their own head shrinkers.

I miss the stand where they used to sell them as I lost mine years ago.

Eh - I don't think it's that. If that was the case, Carousel of Progress would not be as popular as it is. It's that they have a so-so track record with updates. The worst of course is Journey into Imagination which was fucked over so bad, it's a laughing stock on every blog and board. Another abortion was Maelstrom. Imagineers when they work within their own creativity, can accomplish anything. When they are dictated by the suits, it's all downhill. It's a Small World is an example of a fantastic update as is Test Track.

I was on the Jungle Cruise ride last week - and while it's dated, it is classic. I think there is room for improvement, just as long as it sensible and not stupid shit like they have done with POTC over the years. That ride is losing its appeal.

Kids care about Disney and the changes they make to their attractions.
My youngest daughter was in tears for a couple of days when she heard about the upcoming revisions to Splash Mountain.

#824 3 years ago
Quoted from Mike_J:Kids care about Disney and the changes they make to their attractions.

Hell ya, they do! It breaks their little hearts when what they liked is no longer there. My kid was one of those that always wanted it the same.

When I was a kid it pissed me off when they took out Midget Autopia to build Small World. I never got over that, mainly because Small World is so lame. Oh, and what they have done to Tom Sawyer's Island over the years is just cruel.

Trader Sam was always cool to see him at the end of the cruise...

A "Head Salesman", ...he's offering a special deal: "Two of his heads for one of yours"!

I had no idea that "Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah" was somehow racist or politically incorrect. True story: When Bally bought the two MGM Grand Hotels (Las Vegas and Reno) in 1986, they soon had a recording made that was played throughout the casinos that went: "Attention guests, we've just had another lucky jackpot winner in the casino, Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah-Zip-a-Dee-Day at Bally's"!

And then there's the Zip-a-Do pinball machine by Bally. It predates the casinos by several years though.

The whole Song of the South thing was always a bit controversial, but the ride itself was just magical, and at no time that I ever rode it, did I see anything that could be considered offensive except it's link to the movie. Which, I don't remember ever actually watching. But I think we did. I do know the story though.

And like I pointed out, Mickey Mouse is far more rooted in racism than that ever was.

#828 3 years ago

Oh snap! Tom Sawyer's Island will be next. You ever read Huck Finn?

Mickey mouse is not rooted in racism...please ..
.song of the South was based on stories that were lifted by a rich white guy from the black servants passed down from the old African folk stories the slaves used to tell their kids .....This rich white guy created a magical wise black man called Uncle Remus as a story teller. ....

Fact.

Not only does the new version suck beyond all that sucks on earth, but they cut the ride length in half

When I was in elementary school, there was a re-release of Song of the South in theaters. We had a field trip at school to go to the movies and watch it. The world may have changed a bit in the 50 years since then.

#832 3 years ago

Disney keeps a good control on things, but Song of the South has some strange copyright issues. So it is mostly buried (most famously not to be found on Disney+), but not really. Its easy enough to download it from Internet Archive, then you can revisit it with an eye for the current times.

Don’t worry about it.
I’m sure someone with good intentions will pull down the statues of Walt Disney and Mickey found at both Anaheim and Orlando. Statues of historical figures and cartoon characters have been perpetuating racism and insensitivity for years.

NOOO! They can't do that! Then, no longer will it be possible to find that one spot to stand in where you can get that famous side angle. We go there every time (very mature, I know).

I'd imagine New Orleans Square must be on the hit list now too. I don't think I need to remind any of you of the history of that city.

I can’t for the life of me figure out why you aren’t on Facebook.

You realize it’s practically a clearing house for banal grievances like names being changed.

You would absolutely LOVE it there.

See that's what I'm talking about.

Facebook gold!! Probably 30 percent of all facebook posts are old men whining about "PC" and "cancel culture."

And you don't have to worry about getting modded there, unless you REALLY go overboard.

GIve it a shot. You'll love it, I swear.

#843 3 years ago

Truth is when I'm not on here I'm actually doing productive things. Was supposed to be a downpour to end all downpours, but it stalled, so one more sunny day before the sky opens up and I'm stuck inside. They say a river of water is coming.

So disappointing they didn’t plan it out right. It needs to be multiple stories so each new decade gets added on. Would have been epic .

That's not really feasible if you're dealing with a finite amount of space in the attraction and still keeping it a rotating carousel.

#847 3 years ago

That’s why you build up. It’s only once per 10 years that they would have to shut down. Multiple carousels stacked. Not saying it’s easy just need some special out of the box engineering.

#848 3 years ago

They really should install a Carousel of Regress to keep all the old men happy.

A permanent home for Zip A Dee Doo Dah!

I bet that would make you happy. Then they could re-open the Starcade with all your favorite recent Stern pinball machines, and that would make you really happy, old man.
