    There are other issues like maximum continuous current, switching speeds, etc. The 1n400x can handle higher voltage and current, the 1n4148 handles faster switching speeds. Really the way to go is to buy a few dozen 4148's and 1n4004's so you can replace like kinds, and you'll be good to go.
