So I try to order in bulk when possible and in doing so it may make sense to combine the types of diodes I order in to a few or one value.

Do people replace didoes with the exact one that is there or do people just replace them with 1N4007's or some other value? I know that higher value diodes should replace lower value ones but is there any other disadvantage other than the values not matching the manual/schematics anymore?

    Everyone's thoughts would be appreciated.

Get 1n4148 for switching diodes. Same as 1n914

Get 1n4007 as a replacement for 1n4001 to 1n4007. 1n4007 just has higher voltage ratings.

Any advantage to using 1n4148's for switches over 1n4007's?

You can use a 1n4007 in place of a 1n4148 in many applications, but not always. Say like in a bally game switch matrix isolation they used 1n4001 in early solid state, but changed to 1n4148 later.

Most of the time 1n4148 is used because it is probably cheaper, smaller, etc... It may be needed in some high frequency circuits since it is faster than 1n400X. Pinball applications, i can't really think of any

Diodes are under a penny each, just got 500 of each kind.

Probably smart to pick up some of the common zener values found in high voltage displays and reset circuits.

There are other issues like maximum continuous current, switching speeds, etc. The 1n400x can handle higher voltage and current, the 1n4148 handles faster switching speeds. Really the way to go is to buy a few dozen 4148's and 1n4004's so you can replace like kinds, and you'll be good to go.
