#diner Clueless about repairs. What's the first thing to check when top digits are dead and bottom are fine? [pic attached]

Also can someone help calibrate my expectations on the difficulty of re-rubbering and replacing drop targets & gates on a Diner. Do you have to strip down to bare playfield?

Try wiggling display cables?
Especially the ribbon one on the cpu board to the display

Replace bad displays with pinscore led version?

Take tons of pictures etc.

Did the top display die "all of a sudden" or did it show some sign of beginning to fail?
Has the game been turned off for a long time, like months?

If the glass is dead, you really don't have any option but to replace with a new LED model.

As far as re-rubbering and replacing gates are concerned: I would still consider myself a novice, and I just replaced all the rubbers on my Pin*bot, took the gates off, polished them up and replaced. Very easy, just go one by one and replace each rubber in kind. Take pictures as you go so you make sure you put all the screws and plastics, etc back in the right spot. I bought a rubber kit from Marcos and it was not expensive either. I haven't replaced any drop targets yet, but I wouldn't be scared of replacing them. Gotta start somewhere! Good luck.

All of a sudden.

It WAS off for a long time, prior to this happening, around summer 2019. And has been off most of the time since then, because of this

Probably a dead display.
The quickest way to figure this out is to swap a different display in.

I agree with Chris.

a pinscore led display is the same price as an old alpha display.

Low voltage
No heat.
15 min install.

I think this is the better choice if you are going to buy something.

I just bought one for my funhouse.
Its beautiful!
