Those are craters, painted onto the playfield to match the asteroids on the premiums and LE's. It's a space theme. Of course it has craters.

The angle, distance and (bad) lighting make it look especially bad. Whether you're highlighting defects or making it look minty, there's an art to photographing playfields. The pics that show the defects the best are often taken in light you would never consider playing the game in (glare, bad lighting, see above). Those aren't especially bad dimples. That's just a good (bad?) pic of typical dimples.
I freaked out when I saw more and more dimples on my AVLE.
The good news is that is one way to confirm that a HUO only machine "only has 200 plays" is to check the quantity of dimples. Mine must have been low plays because there were only a few dimples here and there when I got it a year old and now they are everywhere a year later. I play my AVLE A LOT!.
