As an automotive tech I used this stuff everytime I disconcted anything electrical on the vehicals I worked on.

I am currently trying to trace down an issue with my SOF and decided I would go ahead and reseat all my connectors one by one. I was wondering if I should apply dielectric grease as I reseat them.

Is this a good idea or a bad idea? Standard electric connectors are one thing, but is it safe to use on circuit boards?

Bad idea, all it will do is gunk up your components

I like dielectic grease on cars because it does a good job of excluding moisture from connections. Hopefully your pin is not getting driven in the rain and having condensation form on it from hot/cold temperature cycles outside.

I have seen many a bad Bally light bulb socket that has this grease jammed into it. It does not seem to do very much but attract a bunch of dust and probably made the previous owner feel like they were doing something to fix the socket.

To answer you question, no, don't use it. It just seems to attract dust and make it a mess to later work on things. I would be sad if I had to strip grease off of my circuit boards before I needed to solder on them.
