OK, so I went on PDI's web site 5 months ago and purchased a TZ slot machine mod for $175 thinking it was in stock. I send them an email today wondering what the hold up is and I received the following email (attached).

Joey from Pinball Decals Inc. has given me two options:

1. Get my money back
2. Pay another $200 for a total of $375

I realize that people get pissed off when they don't get their way so I'm leaving it the hands of the Pinside members, what do you think I should do?

Just get a refund

#3 1 year ago

WHAT?? Hahahaha. Refund.

#4 1 year ago

When in doubt... get a refund.

#5 1 year ago

Their stuff was already crazy high even before they went into double-bonus pricing. You could buy a working pinball machine for what two of these things would cost. Refund for sure.

#6 1 year ago

They have always had a few neat things listed, but boy, those prices are up there.

Get the refund while you still can

We just had a poll on how most mods *didn't* retain their value...

Parts are rare, huh.

These guys are exactly why I got into mods, there is no reason mods like this need to cost this much.

I was making this mod for people for $100 shipped upon request. It does take some time to make and installation is a little fidgety as you have to set it just right so the ball hits the reels so they spin. I also painted it. It is a cool mod for TZ, but no way you get your money back on that one at $375. Take the refund.

I'd consider making it for you if you want for $100. I'm backed up and getting ready for York, but would try to get to it.

Very generous of you ..... If I had a TZ I would be reaching out!

I'm in the wrong business!

#10 1 year ago

I don't understand - the guy is offering a refund or he wants to rip you off. Granted the latter is kind of sleazy BUT he's offering full refund so take that.

#11 1 year ago

Thanks for posting about this. Even giving PDI some sympathy and benefit of the doubt for the cost having gone up unexpectedly, what's amazing (and classless) to me is that he straight up tells you in his email that he's still insisting on a 30-40% profit margin. Personally my first opinion is that he made a commitment to sell it to you for $175 and should've kept that promise. But my fallback opinion is that even if he couldn't bring himself to take the small loss, he should've sold to you at his new cost and not still tried to squeeze you for profit (especially at 30-40%).

If you have to ask the price you can't afford it.

Only if you send him another $200 -

Pdi always has some neat stuff. But in general seems like they are always selling someone elses mod for twice the price.
Refund now! Give Lermods your bussiness!

#15 1 year ago

Joey from PinballDecals is an extremely nice and honest guy, but his stuff is so damn expensive!

#16 1 year ago

Did he really say, "we have to have a 30-40% margin"? How ridiculous, if you committed to something then you commit to it. Barring any exceptional circumstances, I have broke even, made/lost a few bucks on business deals because my reputation of myself and my company is more important than "having to have a 40% profit margin". Some people man, I swear.

Refund.

I doubt a lot of the guys out there making quality mods are making 30-40% profit, I have always viewed PDI as a reseller of everyone's products at twice the price, no better than a scalper imo.

Give lermods a shout and give him your business and money, hopefully a few guys are interested in a slot machine mod and lermods can make a small run and really make it worth his time and effort.

#20 1 year ago

PDI has been full of it for years. I guess ya'll forgot that they were selling toilet paper holders as "toppers." Why on earth is anyone surprised *now*?

At least he was kinda "frenemy" about it and offered the choice to back out up front, so it's really hard to fault him for that part. Take the money and run.

Want to know the profit margin I made on the idea for the Tron lit recognizer bank that Mezel sells? HAHAHAHAHA. I got a sweet Metallica graveyard arch, that I could've paid cash for with far less work of testing wiring and documenting and shooting installation videos. I did it because it was an AWESOME (well...I thought so. I'm not sure the modding community agreed on that. >=P ) idea and I wanted one in my Tron.

If PDI had their way, every TZ on earth would cost 15 grand because people loaded it down with stupid amounts of overcomplicated mods.

#21 1 year ago

He's only giving you the shaft if you let him. Get your money back. Honestly, that makes me want to avoid PDI altogether.

honestly it has paid off in the long run. When you treat people fairly they typically come back time and time again. It's a shame this sentiment is lost on some business owners.

#23 1 year ago

Get a refund and get a colordmd for that kind of cash. Wow

What he charges you guys in the US for Romans non reflective glass is a piss take.

Any decent business would have eaten the loss on anything that has been already ordered.
That's the price of selling something you don't have all the materials to make.

Telling you that they need 30-40% margin is downright idiotic.
Any sensible person would have known you would take this right to the internet (as you did) and tarnish their reputation (which you also just did, rightfully so).

So to make a couple more bucks on one single sale, the entire pinside membership is now reading about it, likely costing them multiple times that amount of money.

#27 1 year ago

I'm sorry this is total BS, this guy paid $175 for a $100 mod, and now PDI wants another $175? PDI is giving this guy a break, at the end of the email he offers $25 off, probably so #RickAHG can afford some vaseline!

PDI or someone on behalf of PDI is using the same $10 pencil sharpener, cutting a hole in it, and adding LED's. I'll call this one as I see it price gouging, they went from 30-40% profit margin to 140% or better.

Lesson learned get your refund.

#28 1 year ago

Total BS also what would have happened if you didn't email them? Would they have just kept your 175 never send you a thing and have no communication? Talk about shady

You paid for it. If his cost went up and now he's selling at a loss too bad for him.

Pick option 3, he sends you the part you bought and apologizes for the five month delay and "forgetting" about your order.

Sarcasm is one thing, you are kicking someone when they're down, that's not cool! I do however give you a thumbs up on "

That email is damaging on so many levels.

Sounds like Lermods made this an easy decision. If they (Lermods) decide to do a run of these I'd be in for one too.

Never did business with PDI and after seeing this email, never will.

Way overpriced man, no reason that should cost the same as a ColorDMD. Take the refund if you can and let them sell it to some other sucker for $375.

Haha that's so funny the prices have climbed that high...380 for the slot mode, wow. If you'd like a very accurate reading of how mods do not hold their value, I just sold my slot machine (the same one) used on ebay for $70. of course, it was probably just them buying it back so they can sell it for 380

What an asshole.

Seriously? Is this guy at PDI mentally challenged?

What a complete horse's ass to mention a 30-40% margin.

#39 1 year ago

Man, thats expensive. When I had my TZ i made my own one. The basis is a 5 UsD pencilscraper !! With an evening of work and some gold paint you can make your own one. Yeah, his may be nicer perhaps but not 370 usd nicer .....

It's because of him we don't have to put up with the rubbish companies like PDI that just tried to screw you over.

Get your refund back asap!

Robert is great at Lermods

I got mine from Judge Dread Pinball in the U.K. for $215 if I recall correctly. Pdi was out of stock at the time. He was had them up for $175 at the time. I am not sure if pdi makes them or he gets them from the Judge Dread pinball in the U.K.

Why not keep his margin the same as what it would have been on the earlier order, no he has to increase his profit because he wants 40% of the new higher price? Wow that's just hard to believe somebody would put that in an email and admit to ripping someone off.

#44 1 year ago

It's a lot of work, but fairly cheap if you DIY. Here are some instructions on how to build it.

Just another reason people should stay clear of PDI and shop elsewhere.

Is there anything PDI sells that can't be brought anywhere else in the US?

Glass

#47 1 year ago

Weird I typed, "is there anything PDI sells that cant be brought anywhere else in the US? Other than Roman's Non-Reflective glass?", no idea what happened there

Don't know how much cheaper it would be but if it was financially worth it for you guys in the US, I don't see why someone couldnt get a bulk order in Europe and send it over to someone centrally in the US for you guys!
