Warning, this is a rambling, musing post with some direction.

Looking to add a 5th and final pin to my collection, mostly because I keep coming back to wanting an IMDN. I'm a metal head, wouldn't say I'm a fan of Maiden, but certainly have half a dozen songs of theirs on my master Spotify playlist, and will from time to time rock their albums back to back. So theme is pretty damn good for me, and should be a natural winner. I was close to ordering, as I've ordered every other pin sight-unplayed (which I enjoy doing, as you get immediately intimate with it and learn to love it with patience and time) but decided this time, and this time alone, I'd try before I buy.

So I made the long trip to the big city last night to try some routed games, not something I typically do since I'm so rural and it's hours of driving. I enjoyed Maiden, wasn't blown away (I'm sure my expectations were too high, and it didn't feel quite dialed in) but would absolutely enjoy having it in my collection, sitting alongside MBr, JP2, BKSOR and Mandalorian (all premiums). The big reason I decided to play first is because I have this rule where in a small pin collection, I only want one pin per designer so that I maintain strong variety, so two Elwin pins was breaking my master rule... but I just couldn't put away the thought of IMDN. I really needed to ensure that it didn't feel similar to JP2, but I must say, it kind of did. It's quicker, flowier, but much of it feels very similar; the satisfying precision ramp shots, brutal outlanes, etc. Hmm... still on the fence. I think if it were dialed in, I might not be on the fence any longer. The two main issues I dealt with: the shooter loop often not completely off of the manual plunge and the ball draining down an outlane, after the ball came up through the inlane. I couldn't even post swap, and definitely couldn't cradle two balls and post swap one, without the balls draining down the outlane. I had to laugh out loud when I did the latter, and both balls immediately drained down both outlanes!

However, Maiden aside, I had some other goals in the trip, and that was trying a bunch of pins that I've never played before. What was surprising was that I walked away immensely enjoying/not-enjoying pins that I didn't anticipate at all.

Positive surprises: Ghostbusters blew me away, more than any. I know there's a lot of hate for GB, and the major reason I even sought it out to give it a try was because I watched a SDTM video the other day where they both highly praised the pin. My god... what a blast, and I'm kinda tempted to buy that over IMDN. I also had zero interest in TWD, as I've never watched the TV show (and theme is very important to me) but man-o-man was that an absolute joy to shoot. Not sure I'd really want the theme in my house, but I could probably get past it. My third surprise/not-surprise was AIQ, hate the theme, absolutely loved the shots - pretty much as expected. I wouldn't say the next two were surprising, as I've played virtual versions and enjoyed them, but super satisfying to play the real thing: Getaway: HS2 and Scared Stiff... simple, simple games that were an absolute blast.

Negative surprises: Hated, absolutely hated Deadpool. Some of the shots are fun/satisfying, but the theme... the music, the callouts, everything just made my ears bleed; so much that I strongly considered walking away mid-game, but I put enough quarters in for three games and I don't walk away from things. I'm not a superhero fan at all, and I'd say I am at a point where I negatively get turned off by superhero themes (honestly, I think it was due to SO many Marvel movies forever, that I completely got burnt out on them). But if I were to choose and love any superhero, it would be Deadpool; at least he's witty and callous. So the theme should have been ok/fine, but I would never, ever, put this in my house and I'll likely never play it again. I'll admit though, I enjoyed the pin more and more as I played, especially as I got that ninja multiball thing off the katana shots; that's a very fun shot. So it's not a shot problem, even though I'm not in love with the layout as a whole, but the theme... ugh. I really dodged a bullet here, as I would have easily ordered this sight-unplayed due to the love it gets. Next up was TMNT... kind of hated everything about it; the music, callouts, shots, etc. This was a strong contender as a "free pin" I were ever to win a raffle from Project Pinball Charity. Another bullet dodged. And I freakin love the TMNT... I had them put on my custom arcade cabinet even. It wasn't a difficulty thing either, as my favorite all-time pin, by a fair margin, is BKSOR.

Interesting surprises: Well, not really a surprise, as they look interesting as all-hell in videos, but finally got to play some JJP games. What... a difference. They feel SO different than anything else I've ever played, and I'm still deciding if I actually like that difference or not. They play so much slower, feel so damn magical, but something also felt absolutely missing from them, and not sure what. WOZ and WW were the two I played, and think I liked WOZ better just because it was my first wide body experience, and the lights and theme were just so well done. WW seemed a bit too easy/boring. I'm not sure if I'd want either in my house, but I kind of do, just to explore this bizarre pin.

Toughest pin to avoid: The Mandalorian. It was there. I have a premium on order. Would rather wait to play it sight-unplayed like normal. I guess not playing pins before I buy is the same as how I didn't find out the sex of my children before birth... just like the immersion of the surprise and saying "this is mine" and making the best of it, learning and growing with it. That, and playing pins in home is SO much different than playing a routed pin on-site, to where it damn near taints the experience for me (other than the luck of avoiding DP and TMNT).

So with all this written, how crazy am I to be considering GB over IMDN, either being a premium? I know it's subjective, my opinion only, don't buy based on other's opinions, blah blah blah. But I like insight from others, and take/leave it where I need. I'm thinking, maybe, I should go totally different and get a WOZ, or even pay out the ass for a POTC. It would certainly provide that variety I'm looking for. I'll probably just do the right thing and wait until some new pins come out, maybe the next JJP or if Elwin does Godzilla. I don't need to be in a rush to fill in the 5th hole. But man... GB has really got my attention, WOZ my interest quite piqued, POTC screaming to just do it and Maiden will always be pushing at the gates, wanting to get in. Never had such a difficult and unclear choice when choosing a pin.

If I go Maiden, then the choice is between buying a NIB from this next run or a dialed-in HUO pin. Does anyone know if this Maiden run happening right now is considered vaulted, and/or if there are any fixes/changes?

#1 Takes some effort to get that working right. Research in the owners thread, it's a common complaint.
#2 Easy fix. Game wasn't steep enough.

I'm a metal head and have listened to Iron Maiden quite a lot over the years but the pin is a letdown to me, I don't understand the high praise that most people give it. To me it's an OK game but nothing more.

I do like GB though and that's the opposite of IMDN as everyone bash that title. I'm a sucker for 90s B/W games but if I ever get a Stern to my collection then GB would be a strong contender for that spot.

TL;DR
Buy the GB

I had a ghostbusters premium. I really enjoyed the theme integration. Took a lot of tweaks and adjustments to dial it in as good as possible. Once I was done messing with it the game got old quick. Played the GB pro on location and the layout of the ramps flow better then the premium LE does. Replaced GB with POTC just before the prices went too nuts.

Funny you say that cause I just posted the GB wanted ad 45 min ago

Still… wouldn’t be surprised if I pick up a dialed-in Maiden

I’ve heard the left and right ramps are nicer on the pro, but I do like the toys on the Premium. Did you by chance go for the 2-3/4 hex raise on the right ramp rather than the stock 3”?

Oh, and how you liking JJPOTC? Worth throwing $17K at?

GB is a great game and the hate is overrated. It’s a fantastic shooter and there is nothing wrong with it people just don’t know how to put the flippers were they’re SUPPOSED to be.

I did change the hex post and it did stop the ball from rolling back down. The issue with the right ramp on the premium is more the geometry. It’s not in an ideal spot to place a ramp shot. The left ramp is also steep compared to the one on the pro. As a result You get a lot of balls rolling back from that ramp as well especially when the coils are hit on a long game. Fun game, wouldn’t be surprised if I picked up a PRO at some point. It’s worth a go. If it’s not for you you can re sell it quick.

My opinion on Pirates:
I got in at 13.5k LE under 100 plays. Fantastic game. I also have a Wonka LE and Medieval Madness LE love them both, but there is something about Pirates that keeps me going back to it. It’s the most difficult game I’ve played, but in a good way. Even when I have a bad game it’s a blast. But I do worry about Parts availability. I upgraded to posts and took precautions to prevent chipping but I still worry about the playfield condition.

How about BM66 guys? Watching Deadflip live stream right now, and I’ve watched him play before, but it keeps reminding me how attracted I am to that game. However, I’m curious if he just makes it look easy/fun, but man, love the theme, layout, choose your own adventure rule set, etc.

Being intimate with JJPOTC and Willie, what’s your opinion on WOZ. To me it’s intriguing, absolutely beautiful but seemingly super boring, though I know y wife would absolutely love it. I’m good, not great, at pinball and the theme does nothing for me, though I think the visuals are probably the best; would I find redeeming factors in it and love it as a pinhead, or would I be buying it for the novelty and my wife… would it keep me interested? None of the shots felt fun in the 3 games I played, but it was captivating by design… is it a players pin at all?

I played WOZ a lot at the pinball hall of fame. I don’t know if it’s because they had a bad example or not, but I couldn’t get anywhere on it and felt the shots were clunky. It looks great and I want to like it. I would like to play one in a home environment.

That machine is super beat in my opinion and not a good representation of how great WOZ is.

I've spent a lot of time on GB.

It's absolute shit.

Bring on the downs! I ain't fuckin scared! BAAAHAAHAAHAAHAA!

#15 2 years ago

I've owned gb pro, maiden pro and prem, twd pro, deadpool pro and bksor prem. Maiden prem is by far my favorite of the bunch, dialing in the plunge is an easy fix. The gb soundtrack drove me nuts was happy when it sold. Twd, theme and art was cause of sale for me, was fun to play tho. Bksor just didn't care for. Deadpool, id own again in a prem someday. But, you didn't mention metallica and it shines above every one of these pins. You should definitely give it consideration.

About where I’m at on it. Kind of curious to play it extensively in a home environment, even though the theme does zero for me… but my god if it isn’t beautiful and intriguing. But it appears there are absolutely zero satisfying shots. But… the family and most importantly wife would love it. Interestingly, the 5 kids are evenly (as far as 5 can go) split between BKSOR and JP as their favorite in house pin; we will see how that changes when Mando is delivered in two weeks. Only one of my children still plays MBr consistently.

Opinions, like butt holes, are unique and respected; no down votes here! Thought I’d be very interested to hear your take on the why.

Interesting! Still very drawn to IMDN and think I may still go for that. Completely agree on TWD… so much fun, but beyond that… meh. BKSOR hits me in all the right places; perfect pinball… clean, heavy and brutal. Deadpool I tried yesterday for the first time and was my least favorite pinball game of of all time… I’ve never almost walked away from a pin. Wasn’t difficult/rules; I actually found it easy to shoot, but the audio/csllouts instant turned me off to get I cringe just thinking about it. Would never ever have it in my house; I’d sell it NIB if I ever won it.

Still haven’t played Met, though I love the band. I am kind of trying to avoid fan layouts with limited pin space since I have MBr, but maybe I need to seek one out to play.

GB flipper gap bothers me endlessly. I think you might find IMDN to be up your alley -- not sure where you played it in the cities, but there is one in particular that could use some love to make the game shine again. If you can 'get past the theme' of TWD and you can find a deal on one, I would highly recommend it. Awesome stacking game that will keep your adrenaline building the entire time.

I currently have all three of the pins you've been mentioning (IMDN, GB, BM66). IMDN and GB are Pro's. All three definitely shoot different. IMDN, hands down, is the highest energy pin. There's nothing in that pin that is slow.

BM66, and to a lesser extent, GB have some 'stop and go' at times. BM66 really incorporates the old TV show assets well. GB does too with good callouts, but being a DMD display, just not on the same level as BM66.

I'm sort of like you, trying to have the all pins be very different, whether it's a manufacturer, flow/theme, or designer.

If I were to rate them, it would be in this order:

1) IMDN
2) BM66
3) GB

#19 2 years ago

Well I commend you on being smart enough to at least check games out for yourself.

Most people on here just ask everyone else what game they should buy.

I think GB is turrible but more power to you if you like it.

Wonka is actually a hard game.. dont let first impressions fool you. It takes a long time to appreciate what that game brings.

#20 2 years ago

I'm always seeing comments from people saying JJP games are slow, particularly WOZ.

Are operators and owners afraid to set the incline higher and coils stronger? Or more likely they just don't think to make those adjustments?

My WOZ plays lighting fast, just a notch or so below a Steve Ritchie game. It's still a stop-and-go style game but it shouldn't feel like an EM.

#21 2 years ago

three Stern pros.

Jack is a great player, Bowens, Keith etc. don’t expect to see everything in one game but you can chip away here and there to maybe work up to seeing a lot of the game.

I’m planning to get BM66 next if I get an allocation or find one for sale. I really like how the rules fit and you can go for various objectives.

Another game that is *great* as a choose your own adventure is SW you get different paths and even some character specific modes depending on the character you start with and they each have some special bonuses.

I understand not everyone likes SW but currently it’s my number one rated pin.

One drawback of SW is it’s not a long playing game so it’s hard for me to get deep but I can work on specific planet modes which each have their own end Multiball modes.

BM66 is supposed to be a long ball time game so likely you may be able to see more on a good long game.

The new run of Iron Maidens are pretty much just a continuation of production. So aside from random in-line fixes I don't expect it to be much different.

I find that ghostbusters is a game that cares about set-up more than average. I've played some that are fun and I've played some that are nothing but constant house balls. I feel it is sort of similar to Black Knight SOR in that people who like modern games don't dig it as much, and people who like older games tend to like it more.

Maiden is my favorite LCD game bar none, and since I try to spread out my collection chronologically it is hard for me to see a reason to own anything new other than that and BKSOR. I also like Steve Ritchie's Star Wars fwiw. Game is under-rated, and I think someone with more space than money would do pretty well picking up a pro.

I love TWD, but no horror themes in my house, so I'm just watching for locations that have one. I get bored with JJP games, but no one around me ever sets them up fast. POTC certainly has an incredible wow factor though.

It's hard to put my finger on it, but BM66 just isn't super fun to play for me. It's fine, but none of the shots feel very satisfying to me. Zach Meny said it best when he said he asks people what their favorite shot on BM66, and they usually can't really name one.

#24 2 years ago

I asked Jack danger what his favorite game was, he didn’t say except that he was playing BM66 more than anything else.

Deadflip seems to have moved on and generally says DP is his favorite if I recall correctly, but he does also love BM66. DP’s layout is much more interesting to shoot than Batman’s. Great rules on BM66 though, just wish it had a more inspired layout that was as good as those rules deserve.

#26 2 years ago

You sound a lot like I sounded awhile ago lol. I love IMDN, my pro is bolted to the floor. After reading about the issues the Premium has, and playing both it and the pro, I found the pro just played smoother. I love the theme, love the music, love the rules.

I had BKSOR Premium for a little while, and got tired of it. I don't know what it was, but it just got boring to me. It's a great pin, but it ended up not getting played much and I traded it for a BM66. Since the trade, I would say 80% of the games played are on it. It's an amazing game once you get the rules down, and hour long games are a normal occurrence.

I'm not sure I could choose between BM66 or IMDN. They are both great games for different reasons.

#27 2 years ago

Reading all these posts is really quite disappointing and sad.

You posted this like a question where you are going to have other pinball enthusiasts help you to decide what your final game to complete your magic plan of “five games” that you will love and cherish forever?

Well, you will never be satisfied with 5 specific games, just like everyone else here. There will always be new games to play that you’ve never played and new modes and challenges to complete that you’ve never seen.

You mentioned things like “I don’t want a horror themed game” and “theme is important”. The real game you are looking to buy is the one where you can stand the theme, has the most replay value, and you won’t get bored quickly.

Well, sorry to say that no one HERE can help decide that for you. For every person that hates GB, another person will swear it’s the greatest. And on and on and on, the big pinball opinion wheel churns.

Are you trusting random pinball strangers to tell you their opinions of the titles you played on location and have them help convince you what to spend 9K on? Would you ask this question on an internet forum full of strangers for ANYTHING OTHER ADVICE in your life? Anything? Well, I for one would not.

All the games you mentioned have some good and some bad. Some annoying things and some great things. Don’t limit yourself so much. Who cares if you own two games by the same designer? That could be a good thing if it helps you decide. Modern games have huge teams of designers that help make or break titles. If you like a layout and like how the shots feel, it doesn’t matter if it’s the same designer.

There is so much more to the complete pinball game these days. We are not buying 1960’s EMs for 9 grand and there is a reason. You can see everything that an EM game does in one or two balls instead of one or two years.

...Interesting!

Ever decide what to get?

Kind of. I’m holding out a month or two to see what Stern releases, especially Elwin; I hear both Godzilla and just because I want to hear it and one said it: Mortal Kombat. That would be a dream theme. Otherwise I’ll IMDN it up, though would have no problem with TWD with a new art package, or if a good condition GB comes up, though I need to play that more than one session. But I know I’ll love Maiden, so what’s likely is hold out or that.

Oh btw, my oldest son LOVED the feel of TWD. Put up #2 high score on location his first game.

It’s funny that you said dead pool made your ears bleed. Like you, I also am a metal guy and love maiden. After a year of hearing trooper multiball and the riff again when the game was over, I could not have been happier to see that thing go. I still can’t listen to them because of that pin. Theme is great but sanity is better

GBpro was our first pin. It’s never leaving. I can understand the frustration due to cheap drains, but that’s an aspect I’ve learned to love to hate (and play over and over and over again). Oddly, when you watch videos of expert streamers, they don’t seem to have much problem with cheap drains. So I always figured that I just have to play better.

The Theme ‘fun-factor’, call outs, music, artwork, dmd animations…all are second to none.

I’m not a fan of Iron Maiden music. I’ve played on location maybe ten games. I’m not that good at pinball, but felt ball times were surprisingly long and the game was boring to me. Maybe it’s how the machine was setup. The STh and JP pro at same location were both much faster games.
