Since I have never bought one of these new from the manufacturer I am asking you who have. I was in the market for this product. One comes up on Pinside advertised as NEW UNUSED. Sounds good. I buy it, it gets delivered. I took it out to take a look and I see a slight discoloration to the barrel that holds the tip on and the tip has solder in it. No hole.
Anyone who has removed A New one from the package able to confirm either way?

    Thanks Ed

Yup it was used. Mine came all sealed. Even the tips were sealed, no discoloration.

Hopefully you got a good deal on it and that's all that's wrong with it.

If I recall the tips were solid (covered in solder)

    Was it maybe remanufactured?

My gun came with a tip already on it, but the shaft was not discolored.

My extra tips came sealed as well, but the tips were all plugged. Once heated, they unplugged, so I guess it was solder in there

You mean like this? I just took this one out of the box, pretty sure it hasn't been used.

I think that's just what they look like new, at least with the solder on the tip.

if it was used the catch tube and filters would be dirty unless they went through the hassle of changing all that out and whats the point of that?

Thanks generica for the picture. The tip on mine looks the same with a blob of solder, the shaft looks a little darker than yours but I am sure all will color differently. I do not see any solder in the collection tube. Maybe/hopefully all is good with mine and the company preheats to test these. I have not plugged it in yet as I wanted to confirm first.

We've got them at work and the tips all come filled with a glob of solder.

    I think you are fine.

+1 All my tips came sealed by a blob of solder. I also fill it with solder when I am done with a desoldering session.

+1 If it was used, there would be residue in the smoked tube and filter area (that's where the solder you suck out collects)

When I opened mine couple years ago I remember the tip being sealed with solder. Looks normal to me.

Thanks all. It just seemed odd to me that the tip was filled with solder. As I said, I have never had one before so I asked the Pinside braintrust. Will try it out soon.

    Quoted from sixpakmopar:

It just seemed odd to me that the tip was filled with solder.

The process of coating a soldering iron tip with solder is called "tinning" .

It protects the tip from oxidation.

So Hakko probably coats all the tips at the factory as a precaution.

Well if new, don't be alarmed if it starts to smoke a little bit for the first couple minutes. Any brand new heating element usually does. That is also a good indication that it is brand new.

Tips always come pre-tinned, and should be re-tinned before you put them away.
