I have done just a few Whirlwinds over the years but this was the first true Diamond Plate that I have reworked. It needed some extra help here and there but I finally got it where I needed it to be.

Thanks.Really nice System 11 games are hard to come by these days..

Looks real nice, Chris.

I hope my DP Whirlwind comes out that nice. I got the playfield back last year from PFR and just have to reassemble!

#13 5 years ago

Dam that's beautiful. Awesome work. Makes me want a WW.

Looks fantastic Chris! As someone that just finished a Whirlwind restore of my own, It was fun seeing how an expert like yourself goes about restoring a game that I'm so familiar with.

I noticed in your pics that you had to make up your own topper bracket. I was going to do the same on mine but luckily found a generous Pinsider that just fabricated some brackets on his own that very closely resemble the original. Just pm me if you want to be put in contact with him. The finished bracket is painted a flat black and is a really nice replacement.

Those look great.I wish I had known at the time I would have definitely grabbed one.I looked for while just to find one to copy but only found a few pictures. It is too late to swap because the game will be gone but I wouldn't mind getting a couple to keep for a spare and pass on to the owner if he decides to change it. .

OMG.... im at a loss for words..... its just beautiful!!!!

You do this for others I suppose? I just bought a WW over the weekend and am looking to do similar work on mine. Can you tell me a little bit about the new cabinet? ......where you got it (or did you make it)? Id love to get my hands on one of those.

#17 5 years ago

Game is stunning Chris. I have a real nice WW and it looks like a lump of coal compared with this one.

#18 5 years ago

Stunning as usual. The only thing better than these pics is seeing a HEP in person.

As always, superb museum-quality work!

Question: Do you restore backglasses as well?

By the way, funny story about Whirlwind: Back when the game first came out, my brother and I lived across the street from a small arcade that got one in. We'd go over there and play it every day. Then one day my brother had the game of his life going on the first ball. He was just shy of the top record when finally he lost the ball. Then I see the owner of the machine come walking up to watch, only my brother didn't know he was the owner. So of course being just shy of the record, the rest of the balls immediately drained down the middle, causing his final score to be something like 2k points shy of the record. I knew my brother was going to break out in a violent rage, so I slowly backed away and pretended I was just a random onlooker. Sure enough, my brother goes into hulk angry mode and literally picks the entire machine up off the floor and starts shaking it while screaming and snarling. The owner says "whoa, take it easy, chief!", and my brother yells "Don't worry about it!" The owner quickly snaps back "I will worry about it, it's my machine!". So my brother sets it back down and takes off out the front door. Later we both laughed at how embarrassing the situation was.

Watching HEP produce masterpiece after masterpiece makes me wonder if 1920's Parisians felt the same way watching Picasso & Dali.

BRAVO Chris!! BRAVO!

I can not wait to see what Chris can do with the Voltans pins I sent down. One them was on our route from 1978 to 2012 and it had very little playfield art left when we finally retired. I picked up another from James in MI to help make the restoration easier. Of all the pins I have enjoyed by playing or operating, I am very sentimental to Voltan as I feel I have grown up with it. I do not even know what new could have looked like in 1978 as I was 11 years old. I have fond memories of us playing it and Silverball Mania and looking at the backglass due to those women beautiful bodies. Remember the only way to see half naked women then was in a "dirty" magazine and no kid really has access. The women drew us in but the play and sounds kept us coming back.

Whirlwind will be home soon and I will take pics upon its arrival. Its going right beside Funhouse I got from Jeff in Atlanta thru Grover G. Anybody want a Luci for 6200 new just out of box 21 plays. Already fixed the factory in the box conditions. Selling Luci will help pay for this restoration. If so just call me 276-679-7779

Thanks
Buddy

Beautiful game. I am, however, curious as to why you paint the inside cabinet sides all the way to bottom as opposed to doing a gradual fade/overspray like the factory. I am not criticizing, just wondering why. I guess it's pretty darn obvious that everything else is "better than new' so why not make that more appealing as well.

I get ask that often.

For me I just like the look and consistency of it.The factory cabinets are all over the place from title to title and even game to game so it makes the most sense to have one pattern and process unless it has to be done differently for the sake of the build.Creature is the only one that comes to mind there. The floor has to be black in some areas.

Here are examples of the inconsistencies I am faced with using just the current games in process and why I stay with a standard system in the interest of a nice look and consistent results.

Medieval madness too the floor and beyond.

Twilight Zone barely past the playfield edge but with a little overspray around the chocks here and there.

TOTAN #1 Between the MM and TZ level.

TOTAN #2
Less than TOTAN #1 but more of an effort to paint the chocking here and there.

Your restore link is not working. Its saying its either "doesn't exist" or "I/we don't have permission to view"

I'd like to see how you restored the Diamond Plate coated playfield.

Thanks

Lucky man. Whirlwind is one of my favorite games. I have a terrific one, but it doesn't begin to compare with yours.
