Hi Everyone,

I recently sold my first pin, NBAFB. It was a sad day, but turned exciting fast, knowing I now have room for a new machine. After playing multiple games on my interest list, I've narrowed my choices down to two; Dialed In LE or MMr Standard with color upgrade & shaker motor.

I currently own a RR WOZ and AFMr LE and enjoy both equally. Both were NIB purchases, and I would like to do NIB again.

Last time I put up a post for choosing my next game, I received excellent feedback from you guys in the Pinside Community. From that post, I ended up buying my RR WOZ and couldn't be happier. So again, I'm looking forward to your opinions.

Now for the million dollar question, if you were in my shoes, what would you buy and why?

Quoted from TheLaw:

I would go DI. Not the best game every but as stated above you already have the better of the 2 in AFM so no need for another.
It's all house monies though. With that POS fastbreak gone your life is much better.

LOL! NBAFB had its moments, however, after getting to the wizard mode (trophy multi-ball) on almost every play, I thought it was time to sell.

Stop in my business and play them both, to help you decide.
LTG : )

Already have and I probably will have to again! See you soon Lloyd.

Quoted from colonel_caverne:

I recently left the DI club.
Certainly one of the most tough game out there for several reasons.
It is technically difficult, I always had the feeling that the ball was never on the right flipper to hit the following shot, some modes are hard and very challenging to complete in timer, some are easiers but this game has the dumbest most important shot to do as SIM Card shot. Never done it in other way than by chance.
The vuk shot, other important shot to start modes, is also hard to do coz of many rejected ball. Plenty of time I had hit it in the perfect center and ended to get out.
Anyway a nice game, with great flow, innovative, great lcd animations, with some flaws that ruins my experience for this one.
Maybe JJP is not for me (woz didn’t do it for me too)
In other hand, MM, best pinball ever, less deep than DI, but challenging enough to go to wizard mode and more accessible to every player. So FUN, so smooth to shoot, so good to hear the sound package, so great toy, so...

I agree that the "start mode" shot can be difficult to hit. I have also had a lot of balls rejected as well, however, I haven't played the game with consistency (only 100 plays or so) to fine tune that shot. I'm hopeful with time and practice, I'll be able to hit it with relative consistency. It's my only worry about the game. I had a JP for a short time and the biggest turn off was the "power shed" shot in the upper right corner. Now that was crazy hard to hit and led to more frustration than fun.

With all of that said, I don't want my games to be overly easy either, like NBAFB for example. If that's the case, it won't last too long in my collection.

Quoted from Zavadoza:

Dialed In. You already have AFMr and that is is so similar to MM. Dialed In is Pat Lawlor's masterpiece. I've played it more in the last year than all my other machines combined (and it's not even close).

That says a lot when you have WH20, WOZ, IJ and other great machines in your collection. Why do you think you keep going back to DI?

Quoted from gliebig:

I agree with the SIM card shot, but the phone scoop? I suck at pinball, but I can backhand that shot from the right flip and make that 99/100 times.

It sounds like I'm going to be working on my backhand today at LTG's.

Quoted from TheLaw:

I can understand the Sim card arguments, never heard of bounce outs from the phone shot though.

To clarify my phone shot experience, sometimes I'll hit the shot really well and it just won't go down. I suppose it's similar to the SOL on Attack from Mars. You might hit it too hard or be off just enough to have it rattle in and out.

Sometimes the phone shot makes me feel like this:

Gives us an update on your thoughts from Lloyd's after you had played both...

I definitely will. I'll be practicing my phone shot quite a bit.

Wonder if he is storming the castle or being dialed in right about now

I haven't made the trip just yet. I'm super slammed at work, so it might have to be later tonight. I promise I won't "Ralph" anyone by disappearing.

(For those who haven't seen this thread, it's a funny one) https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/i-have-until-12-noon-tomorrow-to-pick-my-new-game

Hurry back! Ralph

Maybe I should have trolled you guys a bit by not responding until early next week. However, I'm not one to plagiarize a great idea like Ralph's.

Quoted from TheLaw:

Because it's new.

That reminds me of a movie I once saw. It was about a new toy that was placed in a collection of old toys. The new toy was impressive and the other toys felt left out because they weren't played with as much anymore. I can't remember what the name of that movie was...

Ralph! I saw your explanation post. Welcome back and congrats on your first purchase!

Party at SS Billiards tonight at 8pm. Dialed In is the main feature, with a little MMr on the side. Come join us if you can!

Quoted from OnTheSnap:

On my DILE the back hand is impossible. It catches the right sling. Never found a solution. But I can hit the shot consistently enough from left flipper...

I had the same experience last night with backhands. Only way it works is if the ball is bouncing/moving. Oherwise it was impossible because of the sling.

I had much better luck shooting the phone shot than in the past. There wasn't a cliffy around the hole which helped.

Quoted from snaroff:

For me, the game is much more fun with the setting that preserves SIM cards across balls. I really think this should have been the default. Will be interesting to see if they switch it in the next update.
Your comment about "no soul" is interesting. I don't feel that way. For example, the "Big Bang" shot that completes a mode is amazing. And when it goes in the SIM card hole immediately after hitting "Big Bang" it's magic. Game has some humor and doesn't take itself too seriously. And the amazing flow alone is soulful DILE was my first JJP pin and I'm glad I waited...for me, it's as good as it gets (and I've owned a fair number of games).
I also think they nailed the difficulty level on DI. Great balance that appeals to a spectrum of players. I bought SWLE at the same time as DILE and it, OTOH, is painfully hard. The ornate use of timers/sounds, funky multipliers, etc. I pulled in the pegs and the outlanes and still have a bitch of a time keeping the ball in play. I really want to like it, however just don't have fun with it most of the time. Oh well.
snaroff

By preserving the SIM cards across balls, in your opinion, how has that affected the game's difficulty? How many do you typically collect in a game with that option versus having it on the JJP default setting?

Awesome setup!

Which one do you find yourself playing more?

Quoted from Rockytop:

I own both. I would get Dialed In.

After last night, I'm definitely leaning Dialed In. I plan on making my decision by Monday.

Quoted from rai:

It’s fantastic that you can get two great pins, years ago when MMR remake was announced people were freaking out because the number one pin was being remade. It’s been a great half decade for pinball machines as you have seen with the pins you own. It’s not like you could go wrong either way.
The only thing that bugs me spending $9k on one pin is that I’m seeing or have seen good pins for way less (I bought Tron, IM, Met, TWD, SM, LotR, Tspp) for around half that. I’m nor saying they’re as good but just price is something to consider if you prefer two pins for $10k or one for $9k.

I don't disagree with anything you said. I think the biggest thought that crosses my mind is the $9,000 price tag for a new pin. With that kind of money, you can do a lot of things including traveling the world. Crazy to think about.

Luckily, if you do need the money after purchase, worse case scenario is that you sell it for a $1,000 loss (which isn't chump change either).

#113 5 years ago

Well guys, I'm not one to "Ralph" it, so I thought I would let you know I have officially made a choice between Dialed In and MMr. It was an incredibly tough decision.

The life-changing money was sent to my distributor this morning, they receive it and my game has been shipped. It should arrive next week. I'm very happy with my purchase.

Thanks to everyone who provided a vote, opinion and suggestion; it was really helpful.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend everybody!

I can't leave you guys hanging like that.

I'm now the proud owner of a Dialed In LE, #998. Should get it next Thursday.

Have a great weekend guys!

Quoted from libtech:

If your a player DI is the better game by far, but if you only play once in a while or have non-pinheads over they will all love MM more.

What if you are in-between both of those?

#123 5 years ago
Quoted from Scot0308:

If you were to say you're in love with two women one blonde and the other brunette and inquiring about which one you should choose my advice would be a bit different. Good luck!

LOL! So I do have another situation that I need advice on... blonde or brunette and why?

#127 5 years ago
Quoted from LTG:

Glad to hear. If it will help the wait, you can stop in and I'll let you play mine for free.
LTG : )

I might have to take you up on that Lloyd. Open regular hours this weekend, closed Memorial Day?

#136 5 years ago
Quoted from Scot0308:

Well my wife is blonde. For that reason I suggest brunette.

Well, I guess I did it right because my wife is brunette and a super cool woman.

#138 5 years ago

When it comes to DI vs. MM, we're really comparing apples to oranges. Both games are fantastic and both could be rated higher than the other depending on the opinion. But at the end of the day, we're talking about different eras of pinball.

It's like the Michael Jordan vs. Lebron debate. Both are amazing players. Both have different attributes that make them great. However, they played in different eras where players played differently, strategy isn't the same and a handful of rules (not the core ones) have changed.

This same logic applies to DI and MM. Both have different characteristics that make them great. One has a straightforward simple rule set while the other is deeper. One has better bash toys and theme compared to the other. Technology wise, DI crushes MM.

As everyone has said, you can't go wrong with either. It's about all about preference. You just can't compare them head to head to which one is truly better.

#141 5 years ago
Quoted from KingPinGames:

Congratulations on the decision. I love mine. I even find myself playing using my phone from time to time just to make it more interesting.

Thank you! I'll have to try the phone app once it gets here.

I would have took you up on your offer by purchasing DI from you, but I have a great distributor that I already work with.

Does anyone else hate waiting for their game to arrive? I'm a patient guy, but man... I just want to play some Dialed In!
