Quoted from Lame33:

As someone in the "echo chamber" last night watching on Periscope and frantically hitting refresh on a sluggish Pinside, the game seemed like it was the disaster.
JJP was doing their boring victory lap and acceptance speech before they even took the cover off. The low res video stream was bobbing and weaving more than Ali and felt like an incredibly low resolution drunk VR simulator. None of the speakers seemed to be exciting the crowd based on the little applause we could hear. Droning on about a boring TV mount in the backbox seemed let the air out of the sails. Then they passed out a comic and pulled the cover off something that sounded dumb. It was too blurry to see the art for what looked like a lame Watchdogs (video game) meets Earthshaker mashup. Then they hit us with the price and it was down for the count. What did they want us to think?
The game might be great, the presentation for the people not in the room was not. They've obviously had finished games for awhile. Where was the polished launch video or an online gallery bigger than three oddly angled pictures.
I can't hate on Pinside for calling it like it was shown to the home viewer last night. That was on JJP.
I'm glad the game seems better than the presentation.

If I was Heighway at their seminar, I would pull a Sony Playstation like reveal. Show the game. Say the price. Drop the mic.

When is the game shipping?

This thing is absolute garbage. Worse than New Coke.

Anybody that thinks this thing is going to do well on location is delusional. Just about everything is licensed these days. Look at the casino games. It's what people expect. It's what draws them in.

This thing is going to fall fast

$9,000 USD = $13,500 Canadian after tax and shipping ... I'm not sure there will be many of these on route north of the border.

and probably close to the 15k mark here in Australia.

Are you are expo? Or have you formed your opinion based off a sales pitch and behind your keyboard?

Your posts are toxic to this forum and you are reaching Ka**da status.

#56 7 years ago

Gary has said many times one of the reasons he won't do un-licensed is that distributors would say "send me 2 to test". This is exactly the situation we're in, this game will need to be played by people because the theme does not sell itself.

Can JJP handle a "sleeper" game, that won't have huge front loaded sales. That will be the challenge.

#57 7 years ago

Skimming through front page and the BM66 posts... one thing is clear by comparison, this reveal shut down BM66... i think they picked up 1.5 new pages of posts vs 20+ for this game. Granted much of it is complaining but were still all talking about Jacks game and not the competition, that says something.

Was WOZ really only $6500? Seems like a steal for what you get given today's prices...

I wonder if we will look back 5 years from now and say the same thing about $9k for this pin. With all the new pins coming to market - I suspect not. I won't be buying one NIB - will wait and see how things go the next 12-24 months.

Code is no where near done very unfair to judge the game as is; give them 6 months to get code done

Not really, more people are saying the opposite as they actually see and play the game.

Also, just because a game has a licensed attached to it doesn't automatically make it a success. Theres been plenty of licensed games that have tanked over the years.

Quoted from robin:

Of course the initial reaction to anything new being announced anywhere is always negative. After all, it's much easier and quicker to type out that "something sucks" than it is to actually spend some time to look at it, play it, make yourself familiar with what is actually being shown. Of course the multiple months (years) hype build-up is also a factor in this.
For years, people have been asking for an original theme, and finally here is a manufacturer bold enough to try it in a major release. Okay, the title could have been better, but looking beyond that I think this game looks like a lot of fun. The toys look innovative, the gameplay is fast, the artwork is beatiful (so great not to have stock/recycled art on a game!) and to me the game has that same "something different" appeal that Ghostbusters had. I agree from watching the video that the cell phone sound is a bit annoying but I'm sure a future software update (or even a setting) will solve this.
I really wish I could have made Expo this year but I will sure be able to play one local soon! What I'm seeing so far looks like a fast and fun game with typical Lawlor awesomeness (my brother and I own 8 Lawlor games).
I'm definitely adding this one to my wishlist. Oh wait, gotta add it to the Pinside game archive first.

Thank goodness the owner of pinside has a good head on his shoulders! Well put Robin

Wrong.

I think it's great JJP did an original theme. Looks like fun, not my type of theme or something I would buy, but would definitely play it on location. Problem is pricing and how come JJP can't make a "pro" version. If it's too expensive that even operators don't buy it, no one can enjoy it on location either.

JJP's failure doesn't make B66's price any cheaper. It's still worth less than any JJP game and because of the price Alien is getting more traction in a lot of people's minds.

#69 7 years ago

This may sound like a joke but they need an option to change the ringtone and disable the picture taking sounds. Unbelievably annoying. We pretty much expect everyone to silence their phones these days.

Game looks fun to me in the videos. I admit I like cartoony, goofy, and different games. I also appreciate something original and not another old rockband or retread like Stern often does. I knew it would not be cheap so never really any thought of getting one before reveal. Lawlor is far from the god or king of pinball in my eyes. Yes, he had some pretty good games but also some very forgettable ones. The game definitely has everyone talking.

You know ...I played the game...IT IS FUN AND THE GAME IS WELL MADE...I Believe in JJP and I still think they are the best out in regards to details and making a quality pinball game. I will say that i was shocked on the 6999 LE.....I dont think that has been done before and to us collectors...that is not a LE.r

I think it is well done and it will be interesting to see how things develop over the next year......So the question is ...Will I be getting one???

Your #&^@%! $# right I will...I am going to get the collectors edition...i think it will be well worth the money...I will have it at our showroom for my clients and public to play. I trust the company and this will be a good game.

If this game had been $6500 or $7000 everyone would be loving the "theme" that's the truth. Jack banked on Pats brand and from what I've seen of the short video and people that have played reactions he picked a winner designer, Pat with Keith coding and a solid budget will produce a great playing game and almost certainly dialled in will be a great playing game. Unfortunately Jack forgot that twilight zone and Addams family were both licensed themes and despite Pats reputation you still need a license to be the number 1 selling pinball of all time, nothing Pat could of done to change that. Add in a price at least 20% above people's estimates going in and yes the backlash we seeing is understandable. As much as Jack makes a quality product he has not been able to combine all elements together to create a truly stellar product that secures his place in pinball history. Stern has produced LOTR, Spider-Man , Simpsons, Acdc, Ironman, Metallica etc.. Etc.. This history alone gives them credibility only matched by Bally/williams golden age. JJP needs to have at least one smash out hit that transcends the fanboys and haters and is universally acknowledged as one of the great pinball tables of all time. WOZ was close but not quite universally loved to cement the JJP brand or make it bullet proof. Based on what I've seen and the positive feedback of the gameplay and videos, had JJP given Pat say toy story or bond, most of us would be singing a different tune.

Jack needs to get things 100% right on the next machine (if there is one) and cement themselves as a true Stern competitor. No one else has anywhere near the capabilities to take it to Stern like JJP, yet he is letting himself be upstaged by a bug ridden, alien. Hell he is even getting upstaged by Jpop 2.0 in American pinball that is how bad things are.

Quoted from ryanwanger:

Trust me, it's going to be a big hit.

Ryan, will you be picking one up to route? And if so, which version?

Tough choice for me, that's a lot of scratch. For that price, I could pick up TZ and a TAF (if I could find them) with some cash left over.

I was hoping to have a show piece when I open my location. So far, Alien seems to be hitting the sweet spot in terms of price ... add to that the ability to buy kits, and for an OP, it seems like a good purchase.

#74 7 years ago

Agreed, the video footage wasn't great last night, and I was in like the 5th row.

People are saying $9k is high, but WOZ and TH are rolling off the line right now at $8.5k NIB.

I think compared to a Stern Premium/LE, this is a good value...although I agree that overall, NIB prices are getting pretty high quickly.

#75 7 years ago

I played it. Game play and ball flow is solid. No doubt about it.

Cell phones for me though represent the workplace so it didn't give me something to really get excited about it which is unfortunate because the gameplay and original theme is really good. It just seems to be focused on the life size iPhone on the playfield and takes away from the underlying theme and initial reaction. This is a bummer because I'm a huge Pat Lawlor fan.

Personally, selfies blow balls but I'm probably in the minority when it comes to selfies so the whole selfie gimmick had zero value to me.

I'll probably buy the game someday because of the game play but not not right away unfortunately. If it's not too late, re-title the game and lose the cell phone and this will sell like hot cakes.

Full disclosure:
I am a fan of JJ and Stern. I own Sterns and JJP. Price doesn't deter me.

From the thousands of themes this hobby has there is no way to predict a machines outcome based on its name. I think we have become accustom to licensed themes for the past many years so when an original title comes along we are a bit off balance. The only issue for me is the price...$9000 seems a bit high. I own a small business and learned early in the research process that every business operates in 1 of 3 modes. It is up to the business owner to pick his M.O.

1)You can price high, stock low and shoot for big profits on every sale at the risk of another company under pricing you. (Limited Buyer)
2)Price medium, stock medium, balanced profits and cash flow. (Average Buyer)
3)Price low, stock high, operate at a high volume output. (All Buyers) This mode can have very high profits if managed correctly. Much better production discounts due to buying supplies in greater quantities. Often dominates markets and can provide an awesome cash flow which can often be more important than profit depending on your business structure!

There is nothing that prevents a large company from offering lower than average prices and still make money other than their capability to produce the product and capitalism!

#78 7 years ago

Game does look fun and heck the price is not horrible when viewed next to TDK VE pro price. I guess the name/phone thing is just bad to me. I could do without any reference to cell phone or selfie or text message. The presentation was horrible JJP should have had some real hi quality gameplay videos.

Quoted from singapore_pin:

Ryan: have you seen how the drones work? Anything you can add about the other toys?

It wasn't clear to me how the drones work, but they're stationary, and will occasionally spin their propellors. Each drone seems to activate separately.

There is an exposed magnet on the far right side of the playfield, in between the outlane drain and the right orbit shot. I really loved the magnet action (which is surprising because as a competitive player, I generally dislike a magnet that might fling the ball STDM, like the slings on GB or the magnet on TWD). However, the placement was such that it did cool stuff (fling the ball away, up ramps, into the scoop, etc) most of the time. I did see it drain someone, but my suspicion is that it's preventable if you protect the outhole by raising the right flipper while the ball is in that area.

There is a diverter on the left ramp, which takes you onto an upper playfield...except to me it didn't look like there were any switches at all on it, just a few rubbers and a hole in the center of the (clear) floor that drops you into the pops. Seemed kind of lame.

There is a theater thing right up the middle that is just like Ecto-goggles, but with a bigger screen. Seemed neat, and more obvious to the player/observer than Stern's version. I like the shot too...sometimes the ball gets caught by a magnet, and other times it's an upper loop shot that comes around quick to the upper flipper.

Quoted from rubberducks:

What did you make of the sound though? That's what concerns me, along with the price.

I thought the volume levels were a bit unbalanced for certain sounds...which should be easy to fix. However, I did not find the sound to be annoying. I think "exciting" would be a better description. Lots of explosions and stuff. It made the game feel frantic when it should. I didn't find the phone annoying as others stated...it did make it really obvious what you were supposed to do...especially for multiball start. (Phone is going crazy and turning red).

Quoted from kermit24:

When is the game shipping?

Jack said Q2.

Quoted from smokedog:

Ryan, will you be picking one up to route? And if so, which version?

I put down a deposit on the cheaper version. I have 18 games on route, and always buy the least expensive version of games . (I put money down on a GOT Premium, but backed out to a Pro after playing the LE. Also, I want to put something out as soon as I can, which means a Pro...not waiting months for Premiums/LEs).

As an operator, I was skeptical of a non-licensed theme. I spent a lot of time watching people play last night, and I was sold by their reaction to the games. I'm probably going to graciously accost people as they step away from playing the game today to get more opinions.

I really did not want to buy a WOZ, so expensive. Every operator I talked to said it was one of their top earners ever (and for many it was #1). That has been true for me as well. So, I guess you can say that I have a lot of faith in JJP as far as building good earning games.

I actually think that the execution of this theme is brilliant in terms of addressing both children and adults. It didn't feel like a kiddie theme to me (although maybe this theme hits me more squarely because I was a huge SimCity fan growing up), but the younger generation is going to eat it up (with the toys under the glass, and video game feel of the backbox).

I totally get the concerns that this game is going to feel dated with the "cell phone theme". That never once occurred to me in the hour plus that I hung around it. Again, great execution.

But I suppose in 30 years when we're all half robots and can communicate by just speaking into the air, it might?

I'll also add that the cell phone I think did an awesome job of telling you how to play the game. Oh, it's ringing? Shoot it. Phone tells you what you're supposed to do next. More obvious and accessible than the TH book (which is way up in the corner). The ball is in a scoop, so you have time to see what's up, and no need to decipher info from a massive monitor.

#80 7 years ago

Thanks for the feedback - I never assumed it would not be fun to play, just still really disappointed in the theme
BM66 is going to look so much better sitting in my basement then Dialed In would.

#81 7 years ago
Quoted from smokedog:

Tough choice for me, that's a lot of scratch. For that price, I could pick up TZ and a TAF (if I could find them) with some cash left over.

I held out on more expensive games, but once I got a WOZ, that bumped up my threshold. I bet you could get a MET and a TAF for $10k. So if you have two spots, that's probably a better move. I already have a lineup full of top games, so my options are different.

Both TAF and TZ are top earners for me...but I'm certain that no other 90s games would do as well. Maybe MM? But now we're in the same price range as Dialed In. Dialed In looks awesome at 9k compared to MMR and Big Lebowski, although people LOVE TBL as a theme. The game itself is not as impressive as Dialed In, even though I really like TBL, and might possibly route one.

Quoted from smokedog:

I love the price on Heighway games, but haven't seen Alien yet (other than the promo video). What I will say about kits is, as an operator, that does nothing for me. I'm not going to have a 4k kit sitting in my closet not being used. When it's time for a game to go, I'll move it to a different location, or sell it, and replace it with something else. Kits are probably better for home buyers with limited space, but I wouldn't have a game kit sitting outside a cabinet for any length of time as an operator.

Cool. You may be the closest location to me that has one ... so I'll have to make a trip down to play it!

I played it last night once you complete a mode you will be awarded a lottery ticket. You have to wave your hand across the camera to scratch it off. Also super jackpot is achieved by hitting the ball back the way you came down the lines. It hard to do.

Pat said he's running about 20 % software. It was a blast to play

#89 7 years ago

I think the pin looks fun, but hey, I think playing any pinball machine can be fun. The fact is that JJP and Pat could have developed any theme, and they chose to do this. I am still shaking my head this morning, I really thought it was a bad dream. Let's put GB, Metallica, Kiss, TH, WOZ, any super hero theme pin, or how about any pin that has been made in the past 30 years in a room. Who the hell is going to be like "ohh look, it's Dialed In" that pin looks sick! If you have to sell a pin just because the game play is good, come on, that's not how this industry works.

The gameplay can be okay, and if the theme is killer then the pin will sell. If the gameplay is excellent, but the theme is terrible, good luck. Both gameplay and theme are important, but theme is what gets people's attention first. Of course this is just my opinion. Any theme in the world to pick from, and this is what they come up with, wow just wow. JJP does WOZ and then TH and then Dialed IN? Just doesn't make sense from a business stand point. If you were finding success with well loved themed machines why would you turn away from that?

#90 7 years ago

Thanks to everyone here who had played the game taking the time to provide there impressions, makes being on the otherside of the world a little easier to bare. Glad everyone seems to enjoy the gameplay. Unfortunately can't see many if any being routed in OZ. delivered here you would looking at close to 15K and as everyone knows aka batman SLE 15k is the point in pinball when the poop hits the fan

I love the theme, love the tech. No way I could spend $9k on a pinball, period. I would guess most operators wouldn't unless they have a record of other pins racking up 10,000 plays over a year.

I agree with original poster. I posted in this in another thread just a few minutes ago.

My comments:

- Jack and Pat took a lot of time up front to set up the concept with the audience. Even passing out a comic book that helped frame the storyline of the game. It was well thought out intro. They addressed taking a risk on an original theme versus a movie, tv show or rock band but felt it was worth the gamble.

- When revealed "Dialed In" you could feel the room enthusiasm deflate a bit. I'm not sure what title people were thinking, but it felt like there was a "ok" when it was announced. Being honest, I felt the same - but can't say what I was expecting. Time machine was in my head I guess. I wanted to play and experience it - but I guess I leaned toward theme more than I thought.

- The game has MANY elements (i.e. sounds, components, etc) from Pat's previous designs. I could hear Roadshow, see Crazy Bob's store, LCD graphic elements reminding me of RFM, etc. I felt like many "cookies" were incorporated into the game - and a JJP employee nearby confirmed that comment I shared with friends.

- The gameplay was enjoyable. It's a typical Lawlor game, not super flowy but it does flow. That right outline shot that goes up a wire form ramp was gratifying.

- The toys on the game were interesting. While the phone may look outdated in 3 years based on the speed which technology advances in the mobile industry it's well integrated. It informs where to shoot (where you can see it), mode starts initiate there then move to the main LCD, is colorful with changing LEDs to indicate different functions and even shows low battery life where you have to shoot targets to charge it again. The Einstein Theater is a mix between GB ecto-goggles and RFM/SWE1. In fact it's much better than GB in my opinion. It's not just to shoot and kill spiders and things. It also opens mystery boxes, delivers skill shot awards, etc. It's incorporated well once you spend time on it.

- Not sure if people are aware but there is a camera facing the player hidden in the backless bottom section. It serves a few functions. First, it takes pictures of the player and displays them like polaroids in the back glass during a multi ball accomplishment. Sounds corny but I find it brilliant. People waiting to play had a great laugh seeing your "pinball face" while playing. Secondly, when the Einstein theater displays a scratch off ticket and you hit it, you have a certain amount of time to scratch it off. Displayed on the top LCD once collected you have to waive your hand in front of the game (taking it off flipper buttons) to simulate scratching the card. Like it or dislike it - that's innovation we ask for in these forums.

- The sounds system really is well done. A fellow pinsider who was playing pointed out how the sound seem to be more directed at the player for a feeling of more immersion. When it was my turn, I couldn't agree more with his observation. The speakers seemed to be directed perfectly at the player.

- Pat himself pointed out to us during multi-ball how the alien ships fire at you. You have to hit the targets where it came from otherwise (as seen on play field inserts that light up) if the lights reach your flipper that flipper will sputter and not be responsive for a few minutes.

- The LCD integration again, is one of JJP's strengths and continues in this game. Explains and supports the storyline and modes well. Even in this early code state.

After a bit of deflation at the theme announcement, the gameplay was enjoyable. This is one of those games you really do have to play and be open minded towards. The game is full featured with many toys and we know JJP will deliver on the code. Still, the price point has me waiting on the sidelines. Need to play more and see how it matures in code.

We asked for an original theme - and got one. I'd suggest playing to form your own opinion before slamming it. It could surprise you.
(BTW...it was cool to see Pat so passionate about this game)

#94 7 years ago

I for one am interested in it and cld be a possible purchase soon . Yea 9k but you get so much more included in that price than any other company. This has a ton going on and many cool features and upgrades compared to most pins ever made. I buy my games to play and enjoy and dont care about the name of it. This game is so different from the standard cookie cutter pin with licensed theme and fan layout that everyone seems to keep wanting.. i love my b/w pins as do many others and this is like a newer version of them imo and wld be a standout for sure in any collection or arcade and thats a good thing in my opinion. I think this wld be the most played pin at my house when company comes over. It just looks like something that wld be hella fun and is loaded with neat technology . Deposit is being sent and cant wait to see where the code takes it ....

This. Lawlor attempted to go full Steve Jobs during his presentation. He made it seem like moving a volume knob and headphone jack changed the world.

Then with about 9 pixels on the screen they unveil a game called dialed in. Which to most in pinball means a perfect playing game. Not a cell phone dialing crap for you like it's the 90s
Lawlor seemed super old and inpressEd by overly basic technology.

JJP's failure doesn't make B66's price any cheaper. It's still worth less than any JJP game and because of the price Alien is getting more traction in a lot of people's minds.

Yea but a fully loaded alien shipped isnt much cheaper than 9k i believe?

We got to play the game remotely with the phone. So much potential. Tons of fun.

I really wish people would stop saying how annoying it is because the phone rings and selfies are going off to much. The code is in PRE ALPHA and they are not at a point of tuning and polishing. This is obviously not how the final product will be. I'm sure the JJP team is well aware of fine tuning!!!

The theme may be strange but with proper art adjustments this game will be killer. Dont forget its early and JJP is known to do lots of revisions.

I think we will see a cheaper version without the p/c, invisiglass etc for operators. It's still too expensive for me to buy to route but I assume it would do amazing out in the wild.

I'm thrilled to see a standard body pin that is fast and furious from JJP and I think all the haters may be eating their words as revisions come along.

The innovation and creativity on this title is bursting at the seams, congrats to JJP for thinking outside of the box.

What was also interesting to observe was to see Gary Stern standing in the back of the room during the entire presentation. Once the reveal occurred, he exited stage left.

It was fascinating trying to read his body language and facial expressions during the presentation. Reality TV right there.

Also comical, people were walking in eating pizza that Stern provided practically right outside the door (around the corner by bathrooms). Jack as he started his presentation said "We'll have pizza tomorrow - from Rosati's - for all of you to support our launch". This is why competition is good. Badbilly gets more free pizza.

Sorry but that just looks ridiculous and not fun. A gimmick, unfortunately one that takes a lot of BOM and software (adding to cost)
