This is great. Can't wait to head up to NJ to pick up my DILE... I say a party is in the near future...

#152 6 years ago

This is great, can't wait for some owner reviews/video.

I have played it at the shows about 25 times.. It was great then so i can only imagine its going to be a lot better.

Absolutely Wonderful News!
Congrats on reaching the Finish Line!

This isn't the end, it's only the beginning...

So why is the TV station JJP 8?
You would have thought since this is the third game that JJP 3 would be the obvious choice.

I wonder if they are shipping both import and domestic games at the same time? The box with the serial number shows USA, but one of the games setup had a single slot coin door.

Answered in Pinball Magazine 4:

Thanks. Cool that it is an Easter Egg, even if not well known or as understood as 3 would have been.

(Though the 7/8 argument doesn't jibe with the history of station numbers and assignments in the US. Using the "sensational" logic, they would have gone with a UHF station like 51 or 63 or anything not in one of the two VHF ranges. Major metro areas wouldn't typically have had both 7 and 8 assigned. And these days most people are going to know channel 8 as a municipal access CATV channel which are far more boring than sensational, though 8 might make sense as a Quantum City TV channel).

I can't wait to play DI later today. If this is my biggest "disappointment" about the game, the only numbers that are going to matter are those that will come from my bank account.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. It's got a short learning curve, pay attention to the phone for directions and to the lit arrows(of course). Things start happening quick once you get going on nailing the theater shot and the upper right flipper shot. Watch a few people play before you dive right in, it'll help you see what mode requires what shot.

For me, I came away from playing DI with a feeling of satisfaction. I was satisfied that my expectations were met and exceeded. JJP quality with a fun Lawlor layout made for a great game. Feels classic and brand new at the same time. Home run, JJP.

Jean-Paul's tale isn't quite accurate. Here is the history...

The city design sketch by John Youssi included two train platforms labeled "Station 2" and "Station 3".

cityview_sketch (resized).pngcityview_sketch (resized).png

Jean-Paul's original 3-D design of the city had the same two train stations.

cityview_nostation1 (resized).pngcityview_nostation1 (resized).png

As the team starting tying the city to the playfield layout, we decided to have the ramps be the train tracks. This required an additional train station: "Station 1".

cityview_notvbuilding (resized).pngcityview_notvbuilding (resized).png

As the main multiball rule matured, we came up with "Shoot ramp (track) 1, then ramp (track) 2, then ramp (track) 3 to lock a ball." This, of course, required that we renumber the train stations, as we wanted them to be generally located in the city in a way that matches with the playfield. Somewhere in there we decided to create a TV news channel building, and use the rotating beacon for that.

However, we were concerned about having both a "Station 3" and a "Channel 3", since TV channels in the US are also known as TV stations. So, I suggested we change the number to 8, with the thought that a "3" and an "8" are pretty similar and it would be less work for Jean-Paul.

Oh man, you've got a great memory Ted. You're correct and I completely forgot that this was the way this evolved.

Played DI for the first time today.

I still don't like the name, but it's certainly not "the cell phone game". The actual game is 180 degrees from my original (very unfavorable) impression that from the original announce. Easy in that it's not a drain monster, deep enough so collectors won't get board but (apparently) not so deep that an average player could never finish.

Love the ramps and most of the shots. It's absolutely a Lawlor design and I really like what I saw of Ted's code. The game feels like a modern throwback to the early nineties (as crazy as that sounds) - it feels like a classic WMS game. I really dislike the title and the dude holding the phone featured so prominently and really need to play the game in a setting where I can hear the audio, but it's a game that is now on my "seriously consider list".

At the Denver show today the two DI games had lines all day long. The only other game that came close was Batman 66.

I think JJP has a hit and that DI will do far better than the Hobbit did in sales and longevity.

How do you know the complete depth of rules?

Are they documented somewhere?

There are 11 or 12 main modes then a bunch more at crazy bobs. To get to the special modes you need to collect sim cards after beating the main modes . There are alot of modes in this game and getting to the ending modes will be very difficult from what ive seen.

Haven't had a chance to play it at the show yet but the game looks really fun. Man did they swing and miss on that name. I wrote it off as cell phone game but looking at it in person it's great.

Quoted from RTS:

Talking with Eric Meunier (Designer for JJP #4) and his brother Chris (Kingpin Games). Eric indicated everything is coded and, although there will certainly be some additions, the code is essentially complete.

It's pretty clear that the rules aren't anywhere near as deep as WOZ, but deep enough to keep collector players happy.

It's hard to know for sure with DI because callouts are key to knowing what to do (and it's really hard to hear on the floor when 200 some other games are being played), but after playing and watching a fair amount I think that original assessment is fair.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before, but the voice talent that did Candy in Safe Cracker does Mandy in DI.

I would have to look. It was like 1 day after it was first announced and shown.

Your unboxing pics were like a strip tease, slowly removing the tarps like that. All I could think of was get that thing undressed, so we can see it already. Lol. It looks fantastic.

I hope someone can site one of these in my part of the world. Fingers crossed.

The serial # on the box is 8721028, I wonder if this is the 8th game off the line or the 28th game? His LE certificate says game 144, surely it's not the 144th LE produced. Does anyone have any ideas or guesses?

The 144 is a number assigned to the game independent of the order in which they are produced. The serial number will reflect where you are in the production order. The trick is knowing what number they started with. My guess is yours is the 28th one made.

Well it was Skyemont's game that I was referring to, wish I had mine, but that was my feeling also that it was probably the 28th game. If the LEs are a limited run do you or anyone else know why they just wouldn't start at number one? Where does the 144 come from?

For those who have not gotten there DI. I'm sorry. It's fun as shit. The wait will be well worth it. Jack, Jen and the entire JJP staff is number one to me. That's why I keep getting JJP games. The build quality, fun factor, new technology and customer service is second to none. I can't wait til I pick up game number 4.

It was likely the number Skyemont requested and the games are made LEs first, roughly in order of when a deposit was made. That's just a guess. My game is shipping this week and I am getting LE #1130 (I just happened to get WOZ RR #1110 and TH Smaug #1120 so I figured I'd continue the trend) and I doubt they've made that many yet.

Remember alot of retailers, locations and a few bars and places have had LE's. So maybe I'm the 28th consumer off the line but the 144th LE built. Just a guess.

I agree. I told Jack that if this trend continues, pretty soon I'll have a basement full of JJP games.

Nah. The serial numbers are what's built and the true order. I'm getting the one that they were building for you before the machine swap, and that's 345. There's no way they built 201 LEs in less than a week.

Absolutely correct. I have #82 and I think it won't be built for a week or two at least.
