Quoted from shimoda:Solder wick is a demon's invention.
It does have it's place.
I use it with surface mount ICs all the time to tin the contacts for replacement

Quoted from dung:So you paid 2.5 times what the one this thread is about costs? Don't understand how this pushed you to do anything?
I was contemplating buying a desoldering gun for a while but never got around to it and reading this thread just made me pull the trigger. I bought what I bought as a personal choice, I have snap-on and Mac stuff from 25 years ago so I decided to get the Hakko because I figured it's a 120 bucks extra for something I may have 20 years from now so what the heck. YMMW.
Quoted from CNKay:Interesting, let us know how that works out for you. I think the solder pump and wick would be better personally but you never know..
Quite well! Just recapped two arcade monitors in record time (for me). Easy peasy with this tool.
Quoted from bigd1979:I get mine at Christmas and cant wait to dismantle some shit lol

Great to hear! Grab an old board and try your hand on a couple DIP ICs now. Then when you know how it performs you can go to http://nvram.weebly.com
Pull your 5101 in space invaders add a socket and never need to worry about batteries again. Oh and finding old electronics and pulling spare parts is fun too.

Everyone has an old VCR, flashing 12:00, burning up 40W 24/7, "just in case" someone brings over an old VHS tape.
Time to put that MF to rest.
Got mine and made short work of a bunch of headers on a Bally MPU. Just remember, clean it after every session.
Also, mine came with silicone lube - put that all over the spring inside and the tube so the solder won't stick to it.

That's the one I have and I agree.
Raising this thread from the dead to say that after 5 years of service my station died. It died from getting knocked off my bench. Gun is broken and cannot find replacement parts.
107 dollars well spent for 5 years of faithful service

Not a bad run!

Hah, found that this morning and ordered it. Was gonna make sure it worked before I posted. They also sell the heating element separately. Could have just ordered that, but figured would be nice to have the spare parts.

Yep.... CS is on their third iteration of their knockoffs.... So now we are at the knockoff of the knockoff stage. Either way, with proper maintenance, these should last a long time. They really are great desktop units. All their parts should work with earlier iterations without issue.
