Inspired by Bowen Kerins recent comment that playing pinball competitively is like 'a cross between golf and bull riding' I thought it'd be good to hear forumites' trying to boil down the essence of what pinball is and why it can be so great. My friend is a teacher and loves pinball but when his pupils recently asked what the big deal is, he struggled to put it into words. They just saw it as a game with a ball bouncing around. Everyone here I'm sure knows there is more to it than that but sometimes it's good to identify exactly what we love about it.
For me it's about the physics largely. Feeling the angles and predicting where the ball will go is exciting to me. Combine that with clever mechanisms and toys with satisfying reactions and it gets so much better. Perhaps my favourite part of pinball is the way that sound and lights are created in a semi random way that make you feel like you are playing music and the pinball is your instrument.
