Same - What's your procedure? That looks fantastic. It's amazing what beauty lies beneath the corrosion!

#1304 5 years ago

Started with 220 grit, 320 grit, 1000, 2000. Then once it was smooth I used the green rouge and the compressed lambs wool disks to polish. Harbor freight. I’ve don’t it to all the games I’ve restored because I don’t like it when everything looks perfect until you pull off the lockdown bar. Somewhere in this games life someone dumped a drink or 2 past the beer seal. I don’t polish everything underneath but just the commonly seen areas. I also replace all the cabinet hardware with polished stainless because I hate looking at a chromed game with rusty cab bolts in contrast. I’m weird about it but it drives me nuts.

Whelp... I think the Cryo Claw just died for good on this machine. Have power to the driver board. All good there. Cryo claw will move RIGHT on game boot up. No out of range error. Attempting to move the claw left in claw test mode just moves a tiny bit then sticks. Each attempt moves a tiny bit left, and then sticks. Movement right sticks occasionally, but is usually good.

Oiled the gear box. Oiled the motor shaft and gear. Cleaned the optos (which, nevertheless, appear to be functioning properly). It started working fine for about 5 minutes... then the same problem occurred. Flushed gearbox. Full clean. Very smooth action on the gearbox itself.

Still fails the same way. I think I killed it.

Positive on the Optos? If it worked for a little bit, it sounds like possibly cold solder. The motor appears to be fine if working one way.

Optos register properly in the switch tests. If I manually move the claw to the end position, both register open/closed at the appropriate times.

Sounds like the claw motor pcb. Could be the bridge driver l6203 or cold solder on pcb

looks good but arnt they plated steel , and havnt you just taken all the plating off , so now it will rust . you say you've done it to all your machines . have the other ones gone rusty yet?

If you see the before pictures it was already rusty so even if it was galvanized in the past it failed. After i'm done i treat it to Blue Magic polish cream. I guess really the only thing that wont eventually tarnish or rust is stainless. Even chrome needs to be polished. My other machines haven't rusted so far. I did FT 2-3 years ago now and still no rust. I do keep my games in the house not in a damp basement so maybe that helps?

Problem definitely not the claw optos. Pulled the board out, left plugged in, manually ran key through the optos in switch edges mode. Optos both worked as expected.

Gearbox turns smooth. But a lot of resistance to run when motor is in (don't know if this is normal or not).

Since claw moves right properly, I suspect power and power board is fine.

Suspicion still on the motor itself.

The behavior is very odd. Sometimes the claw will even go all the way left once or twice - usually right after I put it back in after messing with it, then lock up and start the 'jerk slightly to the left then stop' thing again.

I cant even move my claw at all by hand.

Motors can't just break in one direction.

Boards could easily break in only one directions

Quoted from zacaj:

Good to know. So resistance not problem.

Motors can't just break in one direction.

It isn't entirely broken in the opposite direction. It jerks, then stops. On rare occasion (say 5% of the time) it works ok. I got to thinking maybe some dirt or debris got in the gear box, but if you can't move yours by hand and it still works, that's not my problem

Boards could easily break in only one direction

Well it's not the opto board, that works flawlessly in both directions. I suppose it's possible the power driver board in the backbox could have issues.

I feel for you my claw just stopped working. Thought I had solved the issue a few months back by moving a wires pined up against the elavator.

There's a separate transistor for each direction on the driver board, and those in turn control a motor board under the playfield.

Just to add my two cents about the optos. When I got my Demo Man a couple months ago the crane would start moving and elevator would go up and down until I got a ball up there. I figured it was optos but everything tested fine every time passing a screwdriver between them. I went ahead and reflowed solder on the elevator optos and haven’t had a problem since. If you are digging in there anyway couldn’t hurt to freshen them up.

Quoted from Brtlkat:

I think you are skipping a pcb maybe you do not know of. I was talking about the driver motor pcb ( the one under the PF) and not the opto pcb on the mototr assembly itself and not the main driver in the backbox.

#1322 5 years ago

My claw is misbehaving as well. It works sometimes but a lot of times it moves to the right to grab the ball. The elevator moves up and the claw grabs the ball. After a few seconds, it drops the ball and then waits for ball search. Sometimes it will grab the ball during ball search and drop it down the ACMAG lane. Other times it just sits there while the elevator goes up and down.

Mine also acts weird in test. Right is fine, but left gets "jerky". You have to hit the button about a hundred times to make it go left.

I was thinking of just replacing the opto board, but I can't find the thing anywhere.

I had this issue. Cleaning optos work for this at least on my machine.

I had that issue too. In the end I replaced my claw optos and repinned the connector, and it's been rock solid since. The software doesn't seem able to handle even the tiniest of blips in the signal

Problem is in the power driver board in the backbox.

I pulled J117 - which AFAIK, powers the flipper optos (motor plugs into J118). Suddenly, claw worked absolutely perfect. Not a single problem. Plug J117 back in, problem comes back. It appears it's just barely not providing enough power.

These Pinball Life coin slot replacement are very nice. The old ones were crumbling. Previous owner had blue GI which was just too blue. Swapped out that with white but everything on the cab is clear when off ice blue when on.

Problem with the claw was fixed.

I bought a connector replacement kit and replaced ALL connectors plugging into the power driver board in the backbox. Claw now works properly again. Don't know precisely why it was doing what it was doing, but new connectors solved.

Going to go ahead and put in a ColorDMD and do the chrome handle swap too.

Clearcoat is hazy and has to be getting thinnish... should I pull the whole thing and redo the clear coat, or drop in a full mylar?

I was taking a closer look at the flyer for this game. I noticed the round yellow targets were square and fat. They kind of look like the car crash target or eyeball target. I was wondering if anyone actually has/had these in their game originally?

Any tricks to removing the barbed light sockets in the head for the translite without destroying them? I did a forum search but came up with nothing. I'd like to sand and paint this piece.

I just grabbed a four pack of the blue LED halo buttons. They were $20 shipped for the four. If anyone wants to buy the other pair, I'd sell them for the $10 and like $2 shipping and supplies.

Is there a link to instructions on how to install these? Very cool looking.

My elevator is driving me nuts. Been debugging the issue. What I figured out is the elevator moves up and down without issue as long as the Opto board is disconnected. If I test the board it seems fine. Why would the elevator not move with it connected? Anyone have any thoughts? Hate to replace the board and still have an issue.

#1341 5 years ago

Are the optos dirty? Might be causing an issue where it is confused if the optos are dirty enough. Dirty optos caused me a few issues on STTNG.

LCD. LED looks a little better, I think (saw it on another pin at my local distributor), but LCD gives you more display options, which I liked.

#1346 5 years ago

I’m an LED guy myself, but you won’t go wrong either way.

#1347 5 years ago

I have an LED ColorDMD which I’ve had in WCS94. Doing some work on it so I moved the display to Demo Man. In my opinion I like the LED on World Cup but based on the videos I’ve seen of Demo Man with the LCD and seeing it with the LED I think I’ll go LCD for it. The high res just looks so clean. But I didn’t like the way the videos looked on World Cup with high res so I went LED. It’s great we have the choice.
