Just got this job to restore the DM cabinet decals, and they are in such a bad shape that this is gonna be an adventure. So I will post the steps here so we can have some fun
This is how the scans look:
Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.34.04.pngScreen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.34.04.png
Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.34.10.pngScreen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.34.10.png
Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.33.33.pngScreen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.33.33.png
Screen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.33.52.pngScreen Shot 2014-09-23 at 09.33.52.png

Colors are all gone! There are some severe marks that need to be fixed.
The worst part is that this art is highly detailed, like a photorealistic drawing. That means there are less lines and more gradients. Will take much more time.
Next step: trying to figure out what the next step is..

I got my backbox decals from Australia. good luck, someday i'll tackle this when it's not on location.

The lettering is done

Screen Shot 2014-09-25 at 14.36.47.pngScreen Shot 2014-09-25 at 14.36.47.png

It's gonna look great when all is done for sure. The difference is huge:

Screen Shot 2014-10-01 at 14.21.43.pngScreen Shot 2014-10-01 at 14.21.43.png

still needs a lot of work..

#6 9 years ago

Awesome game got rid of mine because of no cab decals available hopefully you can get these done

#7 9 years ago

we have the artwork ... if someone has the connection and can help get us permission then will be good to go ... but not sure that will be very easy unfortunately ...

Rick I hope you can get all the licenses you need and can't wait to see what you reproduce in the future. There is a lot of games that are great just need resto parts for them.

#9 9 years ago

we've not yet cracked the code on DM rights, but will try on this shortly ...

I hope you can getting all the licenses has to be a pain in the $ss

#11 9 years ago

Yes, most any 'large' licensee wants $5K-$15K upfront pre-pay royalty and then a % of the revenue after that pre-pay is paid. So imagine trying to sell $50K-$150K of product from one game title (at 10%) ... that is what they want ...

#12 9 years ago

I know what you mean I have had to buy a song before for an ad campaign for my companies and they wanted 80k for 1 year rights you would think they would take anything but no they want stupid money even if it's not popular anymore

#14 9 years ago

I feel for you but you can get them to play ball just need a good license negotiator we used one and got it for 25k just shoot them An offer they will play ball with you

Can Wayne help with this as he still has sets of the backbox decals he is selling or are there multiple licences required?

@Hassanchop - your work is always fantastic so I am sure this will turn out to be another great project

#16 9 years ago

The $ amount is Sooo small on these that many licensees don't waste their time (but also legally can't allow them to go forward without a contract) ... sadly.

#17 9 years ago

Not trying to hijack the thread, Hassanchop, as your work definitely deserves to be highlighted, but I'm curious, Rick, does the license issue affect things without identifiable artwork, like the much-awaited DM ramps?

#19 9 years ago

We need licenses to protect the artists. But in this case of a 20 yo machine where 200 or less guys want the decals, the license holder should be a little more reasonable.

Anyway, the side is done. A lot of work but finally done.
Now on to the front and head.

Really nice work! Question, wasn't Stallone done in skin tone on the side?

#21 9 years ago

Funny...I just sent him a PM saying the same thing

Demo Man has become one of my absolute favorites and my cabinet is in very rough shape, I'll be first in line to place an order for decals with PPS once available.

#25 9 years ago

1 week since update! I'm eagerly waiting to see what you've done since last post.

#26 9 years ago

How are you doing this anyways? By restoring decals do you mean scanning the original artwork, retouching using software then printing off new decals?

I just realized I don't know what the hell you're talking about. : )

#28 9 years ago

Yep, I receive a scan and then retouch/remake the art on the computer.
It's a lot of work, but in the end you go from left to right:

I wouldn't call that a restoration - it's more of a "restomod" to steal a word from the car world.

A restoration uses the original colours. Yours is much brighter and therefore not "accurate".

Quoted from jwilson:

You are seeing the file in jpeg. The colors will have to be adjusted in the printing phase.

Anyway, it's impossible to reproduce the same colors exactly because the printing technique will be different form the one used back in the 90's. Even if I had the original file that Rick has..
So, yeah we could call it a restomod

Are the "scans" just high quality photos taken with a camera? Or is there some special equipment and process to scanning huge pieces of art like this?

You need a portable hand scanner:

Front is done!

I think Wesley's hair is white on this cabinet front. At least that's what I see on every pic on the net, including the flyer.

#34 9 years ago

Looking good, can't wait to see them applied to your machine.

#35 9 years ago

and done:

Now let's see how it's gonna look on the machine heheheh

Holy cow that looks awesome. I wanna know how it turned out. I have a DM with some scratched decals. Would definitely be interested in getting them replaced if the price was right!

All tests are done and the result is pretty nice for this restomod
