OMG - Is that really the same DM - You sure you did not use PhotoShop?

#4 12 years ago

Wow nice job! That game was more dirty than mine

#5 12 years ago

Nice work...I just picked one up this week. I LOVE this game.

I think it's a really good photoshop series we've got going here. [j/k]
Great job BTW.

beautiful

Good job! Looks spectacular! Mine had that same black grime film on it and the ball trails were awful. It is amazing what a little elbow grease, magic eraser, and Novus can do. It is also a shame that people let them get in that bad of shape. I guess it makes for a cheaper buy when that are like that. I would rather buy cheap and shop them out nice that pay top dollar for an already shiny PF.

I have yet to get to the really hard to reach spots for a complete shop job. When I do I plan on waxing. I was thinking of ordering some Millwax, but I see a lot of people using car waxes. Any favorites?

I now feel the exact same way! This was a definate bargaining tool. I actually thought the multi-ball insert lettering was gone until I got it home, licked my finger and rubbed it accross.

Looks like the grime was a protective layer. Nice looking playfield.

#12 12 years ago

Amazing!

Mine was really dirty too. Wish I had thought to do 'before' pics.

There are people on both sides of this fence but personally I would not use Millwax. It is more of a solvent than a wax really. What I normally do is clean it good with Naptha or 90% + alcohol, then clean a buff with Novus 2 (sometimes 2 coats) and then I use a carnauba based paste car wax. When you are tearing it down to shop take lots of pics and put screws and stuff in labeled ziplocs. You may want to write down the order you take stuff off down. It can be a booger to put back together in the right order. I had to take stuff back off several time because I couldn't get something on because it should have gone first. Label both ends of all under PF connectors that you have to take loose. It makes it 10 time easier to reconnect everything! IMO DM is one of the most challenging shop outs but when you get it under you belt, others will seem pretty easy. Unless it's TZ or something

At some point that stopped being dirt and became playfield wear protection.

Nice job.

#15 12 years ago

someone spilled a whole soda (i figure) that was probably sitting on the playfield glass on mine...i think i used 50 q-tips to clean the whole inside of the front of the cabinet (electrical, mechical, cabinet). hell there was even soda in my ball trough...no joke

Night & Day. way to give it some love

#17 12 years ago

Who would have thought that playfield looked so great underneath all that crap? Nice work.

#18 12 years ago

That thing looks great. Never would expect that.

I've seen way worse when it comes to this black playfield grime. There is a Shrek in a local bowling alley here with so much black crap on the playfield, that you can barely make out the characters. I'm positive that it can be brought back to its original shiney goodness though. Essentially if all the artwork is still present under the grime, you're golden. Novus 2 is your friend here

Nice cleanup Magician!

#20 12 years ago

I've said it many times, anytime you get a game with thick black crap on the PF, that PF is going to look great after novus 2'ing it.

#21 12 years ago

there's a tspp in town that's way worse than that. sorry about the oneupmanship there.

I was thinking the same about mine! Although I haven't done the upper playfield yet. Little hesitant to take apart all those ramps without much experience. My friend and plan on doing that when we have a free weekend, if we do I will take pics before/after.

I think you missed a spot...right over to the left. Very nice job!

Did it take much scrubbing with the eraser? Did you notice any thing from the pf art on it? I have some similar grim on my SM, but don't know how much scrubbing can be done before the pf art is affected. I'm likely to start in a small corner using something light (some alcohol) and work up to Novus before trying the eraser. But if the art stood up to that cleaning, I may just save time and go for the eraser first.

#24 12 years ago

I think DM can take a good scrubbing because of DiamondPlate. The art is probably pretty safe.

#25 12 years ago

Well played sir!! I would not use millwax either go with a carnuba paste wax and your good to go.

I would stay away from the alcohol I used magic eraser on my SM in a few spots and it worked well with no noticable affect to the playfield. You just need to use care because it is abrasive so just go little by little with light pressure and you should be okay. I would go with magic eraser before using an alcohol based cleaner myself.

Wow - amazing how great it cleaned up! I love seeing before and after pics. For me, it's like pinball porn. Thanks for sharing!

#27 12 years ago

Wow! That really cleaned up great! Good job, FlipperM.

I used the magic eraser on the shooting lane in SS and I was totally surprised by the results. I used it based solely on the recommendations posted here on pinside.

You guys rock!

#28 12 years ago

My OCD kinda makes me more interested in doing these kinda jobs more than actually PLAYING the machines. Awesome work there.

#29 12 years ago

I didn't even think to try a magic eraser even though I have read about it in other posts. Just a microfiber rag and Novus. I'll have to try the eraser next time.
