This seems to the most divisive game in memory.

My wife and I have been waiting for this game for a few years now since it was first announced. Even the day before release I couldn't tell you what it was really about.

My personal experience with the game was the first 10 hours are frustrating. It is only when you get to Chapter 3, that the game and world become more fun.

You get upgrades, weapons, roads, and start to connect (make "strands") with other players in a meaningful way. This type of asynchronous alternative to MMO games is actually quite fun and I think could be the start of something.

I will wait to give my final review of the title when I complete it, but I can't debate the first 10 hours of the game. I was ready to quit myself when I was left wondering "if this is all there is, this just isn't fun".

I am definitely having fun with it now and look forward to returning to it every day. I believe my final opinion of the game will be quite high, with some remarks for how it started.

The production of it is first rate, this is a AAA release. It's just too bad it is so divisive and didn't ease people into the world better. I can't blame the gamers.

I thought the weirdness of it was intriguing, but the gameplay looked pretty meh and repetative. I will wait until the movie.

You’re talking about Monster Energy Simulator Cinematic Experience 2019 right?

so far I'm loving it haven't even gotten to chapter 3 yet.

Can you expand on the gameplay loop a little bit more? I wasn't aware the game eventually became multiplayer.

This review from gamespot talks about the multiplayer, I set the start time for when she starts speaking about it (4:38):

I like this review of the game, it's a positive one, rates it a 9, which is where I'm landing with it right now.

The internet makes it so easy to hate on things, especially when people try new things. As I stated earlier, there is a frustration factor at the start of this game that I wish wasn't present, but overall this game is an achievement.

I am usually cautious of releases that only show pre-rendered cut scenes in their trailers. Every game has movies in it these days, so I guess I am just supposed to go spend $60+ because I was so gripped by the narrative? After seeing gameplay, I can see why they kept it secretive. I might still give it a go down the road as it at least looks unique, but up to my eyeballs in Baldur's Gate EE right now.

I was sort of interested in the game at first. But it just didn't live up to all the hype for me. I watched the walkthrough of the game up to level 4 and by that point I was so bored, clueless, and frustrated with trying to figure out what was going on that I just skipped directly to the final level and the ending. In the end it still makes zero sense to me and I honestly think that the entire development team was dropping acid when they came up with this one. Honestly, from a production standpoint the game is absolutely phenomenal, but from a gameplay standpoint for me it would be boring and a literal chore to play. Most won’t admit that though because they think that Kojima is God.

I saw something before the game was released that Kojima said the game won't be fun until about 1/2 way through. I wondered if I would be able to make it that long. Wonder how many other people stop playing as well before that part.

I think I'll wait until it's a $20 game. Or at least see what prices are like after Christmas.

Takes me back to Final Fantasy XIII which got me off FF games altogether.
"After around 30 hours it opens up..." no thanks.

I've heard from a friend that things don't really pick up until level 10 or so out of 20, which is a good while because each one is pretty long and he also mentioned that he could really see most people giving up and getting into something else instead. Black Friday may be the time to get a deal on it if possible.

I'm not going to try to convince anyone of anything with this game, it's definitely not going to be for everyone, but I've been looking forward to getting back to it every day.

This is the only neutral and objective review I have seen so far

I'm 50 hours into the game now, so I have a pretty good idea of what its about.

i hear you deliver packages and carry around an aborted baby, sounds interesting.

I did not make this, but obviously I'm not the only one that has felt this.

It just seems comical watching these videos with him carrying stuff that seeming has no weight. They totally blew the ultimate Halloween costume this year by releasing after Halloween. By next year, no one will care.

Finished the game at 100 hours of play time. We took our time and did lots of side quests.

This is such a difficult game to rate. I would call it an Imperfect Masterpiece. It is a very unique experience, and creates more feelings in the player than most other games (how many games illicit gratitude in you?).

In our end stats, it says we had connected with over 2,000 other players.

Now that we're finished with the story my wife is spending time upgrading roads and structures for other people to use.

Without spoiling anything, will this degrade the experience for a new player who jumps in next year?

I remember back in the day when Star Wars Galaxies came out, you could build your own house. It was fun in the first year of playing, but then it just became overcrowded, and soon became hard to build anywhere.

There is a built-in device that erodes all structures. Everything rots unless kept up. So a lapsed player will have all their stuff disappear in a relatively short amount of time (weeks maybe). In the few weeks we've been playing a lot of structures are looking pretty rough when they were all nice at first.

It's also not a fully shared world. You only see things from people who you've connected with, so lapsed players would not have a connection with a player from next year. And even then, just because you've created a "strand" with someone doesn't meant you see everything they've done, or them you. Fleeting strands.

This type of hybrid MMO is really innovative, imo.
