I cannot get my fluorescent light to work on the backbox. Can anyone recommend a good light kit for this game? I see some posted from a few years ago. I'm curious if there's any newer kits that really work well with this game.

I am very happy to be able to offer it

Thanks, appreciate it. I guess I'll get creative...

ArcadeUpkeep’s dimming LED solution is my recommendation.

It’s amazing. I’ve used them on all tube back box Sterns.

Hey PotC owners! I had a long-standing request to make my 3D Coin Reject Buttons for PotC but hadn't gotten to it until now ... so here they are!

PotC_1_RCP (resized).jpgPotC_1_RCP (resized).jpg

While I initially planned to only do the bones in white, someone asked me to make them in black too -- so I have both here to show. Technically I could make the bones any color you want (red might look cool?), so I guess that's up to you. The button itself can be your choice of translucent color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, clear/white). I print these buttons with a programmed filament change so the bones are permanently fused to the button.

Cool story about Anne Bonny, who I assume was the inspiration for our lady captain/pirate:

Color DMD for POTC...yay or nay?

#2663 3 years ago
Quoted from RDReynolds:

Color DMD for POTC...yay or nay?

Definitely. Has great animations and just brings the game to life. You wont regret it. If you do, return it or use it in a different pin.

Color DMD for POTC...yay or nay?

It's a game changer. I don't have it in mine yet. But my buddy has it in his and it makes a world of difference.
As far as I'm concerned there are 3 must have mods for this game.
1: maffewl airball protector
2: Color DMD
3: Comet Sunlight 2 SMD LEDS.

ColorDMD is really easy to justify for POTC. 90% of Pinside buyers will mentally subtract $400 if yours doesn’t have one. And if you plan to keep it forever, like many of us, it just comes out of your kid’s inheritance.

#2670 3 years ago

Thx everyone, ordered mine today. Will make those Monkey Island tribute graphics pop!

I would also like to put a colordmd or a pin2dmd but I would like to keep audio and writing in Italian, is it possible?

Quoted from jamex:

pin2dmd will works with english text on display. If you can turn on italian voice in game. it will works. I think in both solutions they will work only with english data on display.

I wonder what the predominant language was among those pirates, back in the 1800s. Portuguese? Spanish? Seems like that should be an option - give me the un-dubbed version!

#2677 3 years ago

re:English/Italian.
I did the coloring for POTC. Obviously any screens without text are going to color just fine.
Screen with text - I didn’t specifically color screens in any language except English, but I think most will look the same.
Happy to see ColorDMDs in so many POTC . Mine isn’t going anywhere!

Anyone have a link for a GOOD LED kit for POTC? Some of your machines are stunning and I want to make mine look that way (it's stock at the moment)...

Quoted from RDReynolds:

Everytime I see images of this game with LEDs, I wonder if I should do the same ...
I only have a handful of games without them (POTC and LOTR)
I think the incandescent bulbs fit this theme well - FWIW

#2680 3 years ago

Comet sunlight leds are the way to go on POTC. It brightens everything while keeping that warm glow. You can use them for everything, gi and inserts.

#2681 3 years ago
Quoted from RDReynolds:

https://www.pinballbulbs.com/products/pirates-caribbean-ultimate-led-lighting-kit

I have used these kits on a few pins. Comes with a placement guide, which makes it really easy to understand which color bulbs go where. Also includes spotlights and led strips. A little more expensive, but I think its worth it. They always turn out awesome.

#2682 3 years ago

I just finished converting mine to led 2 nights ago. Didn't buy a kit. Went with warm white comet 2smd frosted for the gi and matched the insert colors with the 1smd non ghosting clear bulbs for the inserts. Cost me about $90 for all the bulbs. The inserts are quite bright though so I'm switching to the retro non ghosting bulbs on the warm white inserts and frosted on the reds and blue. Those should be here early next week.

Any chance you could send me a list of how many total bulbs of each type you used and where you got them? I’d be SUPER appreciative!

#2684 3 years ago
Quoted from RDReynolds:

Any chance you could send me a list of how many total bulbs of each type you used and where you got them? I’d be SUPER appreciative!

GI:
45 - 2SMD Bulbs - Bayonet (44/47) / Warm White / Frosted according to the manual. manual says 52 but I couldn't find them all.

For the back panel
7 - 2SMD Bulbs - Bayonet (44/47) / Red / Frosted
3 - 2SMD Bulbs - Bayonet (44/47) / Green / Frosted

If I was doing it again though I'd probably go 50/50 warm white for the flipper area and sunlight for the rear as sunlight is a bit brighter.

Inserts:
1 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Blue / Clear
8 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Green / Clear
17 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Warm White / Clear
13 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Red / Clear
15 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Yellow / Clear
2 - 1SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Orange / Clear

manual says there are 63 bulbs of the 555 type but I only found 56 of them. I have not replaced the pop bumbers so that could be 3 more. Not sure where the last 4 would be. maybe the start button and coin slots? dunno

As I said I have another order with almost all of those with the frosted coming. I'd recommend just going frosted for everything. I've also got 15 of the Retro SMD Non-Ghosting Bulbs - Wedge (555) / Sunlight White / Frosted coming to dim the clear inserts. I'm keeping the two behind the center of the compass the clear warm white as I like the brightness of those.

If this doesn't work for me I'll probably swap them all out and buy an LEDOCD to dial everything in but I costed that out to a bit over 200 for all of the insert leds with the board not including shipping. So if this experiment with the retro works for me I'll have saved 60 lol.

#2685 3 years ago

Definitely verify the insert numbers. I think I might have missed a few yellow and used alternative leds I had on hand. Bought everything from comet.

#2686 3 years ago

This is AWESOME. Thank you, I will get my order in for sure and get my POTC rocking. Thanks!!

#2687 2 years ago

Before and after. Huge difference, thanks for the input!

A couple more questions:

- I am getting a bit of flicker on a few bulbs. Any ideas there?

- What other must get mods do y’all suggest?

Has anyone powder coated their POTC legs, coin door etc? Please post pics. Trying to see what colors would work.

Matt at Back Alley did my powder coating. He picked Retro Rootbeer. As usual, it’s hard to get a good pic of the exact color. It blends well with the cabinet sides art. And also has the laser cut out ‘Pirates Life For Me’ with a brass plate behind it. I saw somebody do a hammered gold and thought that went well with the playfield art.

Those both look fantastic! I would also consider other colors for your flipper buttons, maybe black or blue. I like to swap out the usual red ones with another color. I really like the change!
