I thought I could live with this wear spot on the pink top donut, figuring it's hard to see up top. Well it was bothering me so I painted the donut.

IMG_20210127_221238643_resize_5 (resized).jpgIMG_20210127_221238643_resize_5 (resized).jpg

Then, next to the freshly painted pink donut, the purple donut was looking pretty ratty.

IMG_20210131_201336691_resize_23 (resized).jpgIMG_20210131_201336691_resize_23 (resized).jpg

So now that one had to be painted. And so it goes... This is how I ended up painting a lot more than I originally intended to. My wife points out that I'll kick myself later if I take shortcuts. She's right.

IMG_20210131_222311274_resize_3 (resized).jpgIMG_20210131_222311274_resize_3 (resized).jpg

I also repainted a couple areas of blue that didn't turn out so well. The Kwik-e-mart kick I think I scuffed with the scotch brite before it was fully dried and had a dark tint to it. Moe's blue shirt I had brush painted because it was such a small area but it was showing my brush strokes, so it got airbrushed.

IMG_20210127_221246435_resize_46 (resized).jpgIMG_20210127_221246435_resize_46 (resized).jpg

IMG_20210128_234151832_resize_3 (resized).jpgIMG_20210128_234151832_resize_3 (resized).jpg

You can see Moe's apron shows some unevenness in that photo, so that got repainted as well.

This is great work! Matching colors is a true art.

Thanks Jody! Now all I need is a new ramp!

At that point I could put some decals on but will need to wait for another clearcoat for others like the top lane donuts and moe's apron. I sanded up to 1000 grit for the decals, which wasn't quite enough. Here is one with some ghosting under the big K.

IMG_20210206_194847961_resize_17 (resized).jpgIMG_20210206_194847961_resize_17 (resized).jpg

So I sanded up to 2000 grit with better results.

IMG_20210208_214913904_resize_79 (resized).jpgIMG_20210208_214913904_resize_79 (resized).jpg

So I got some of the decals on, some small touch ups, and took it in for the 4th coat of clear.

I'm not saying its coming....but its coming. This summer is the plan!

Looking killer so far! I love my DE Simpsons.

I found a populated NOS ramp a few months ago buried in an operator's warehouse. If/When I manage to get my game back from my brother, I'ma take mine apart and try to tidy up a few things. My current ramp is pretty dang good, except for a busted side at the entry which lets you sometimes take a shortcut to that kickout hole on the left. Kinda kewl actually. I'll be selling the old ramp when I get the machine back. I lent it to my bro for his boy's 21st birthday party 6 months ago, and he and his boy are addicted. LOL.

Anyway, what I (and everyone else) need are plastics! Kwik-e-mart, bowling alley, etc!

After the decals I got another coat of clear, again the new place turned it around in a couple days. This would be coat number 4. This sealed in some additional paint layers so I can do some additional decals and coat it again. I see light at the end of the tunnel! Here are some pics of the primary repair areas with the fresh clearcoat.

Waterfall looks nice under the clear.

IMG_20210211_205132142~2_resize_28 (resized).jpgIMG_20210211_205132142~2_resize_28 (resized).jpg

Got Moe's speech balloon in but repainted his blue and pink so decal needs to go on this clearcoat layer. Some lines need to be touched up.

IMG_20210211_205206466~2_resize_95 (resized).jpgIMG_20210211_205206466~2_resize_95 (resized).jpg

Drop target starbursts done.

Kwik-e-mart kick repainted looking better, just need decals. Advance books done.

IMG_20210211_204919442_HDR~2_resize_54 (resized).jpgIMG_20210211_204919442_HDR~2_resize_54 (resized).jpg

Donuts look good, just need decals. Glad I redid them.

IMG_20210211_205104175~2_resize_78 (resized).jpgIMG_20210211_205104175~2_resize_78 (resized).jpg

Bowling pins and opening look good, unevenness pretty much gone.

IMG_20210211_204950690_HDR~2_resize_39 (resized).jpgIMG_20210211_204950690_HDR~2_resize_39 (resized).jpg

Bonus inserts done, just need the extra ball decal.

Thanks. Nice find! My ramp is broken in the same place, I think most are. Other than that it's fine, just yellowed and will stick out like a sore thumb with the restored playfield. There has to be a way to reinforce that entrance.

I did ebay a set of repro plastics but they are pretty crummy. One step above my missing and broken/gluey plastics.

Sanded that coat, got the last decals on and a few small touch ups and got clearcoat number five. I'm liking this thing where the shop has it ready for me in two days. It's been a long road but I'm calling it done on touch-ups, I'm going to sand it and get one more top coat this week. Excited to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Picked up the playfield today with clearcoat number 6 on it. Looks great. With about $400 of clearcoat and incalculable amounts of time I'm ready to put this thing back together.

IMG_20210224_171300608_resize_78 (resized).jpgIMG_20210224_171300608_resize_78 (resized).jpg

It is a beautiful thing. As much as I hate to, I know I need to take the sandpaper to it now. Here's the obligatory reflection photo.

IMG_20210224_124144388_HDR~3_resize_41 (resized).jpgIMG_20210224_124144388_HDR~3_resize_41 (resized).jpg

Looks pretty shiny but upon close inspection you can see the welling around the holes and cutouts. Plus there are some dust particles and so forth.

IMG_20210224_124144388_HDR~4_resize_57 (resized).jpgIMG_20210224_124144388_HDR~4_resize_57 (resized).jpg

I started at wet block sanding at 1500 grit but it wasn't removing enough material, so I went to 1200 to get back to a flat surface.

IMG_20210224_203552275_resize_69 (resized).jpgIMG_20210224_203552275_resize_69 (resized).jpg

I was able to get everything leveled again, tomorrow I will go back to 1500 and then 2000.

#63 3 years ago

Wet sanded by hand up to 2000 then used my new DA buffer with Meguiars ultra compound and ultra polish. I think it looks fantastic!

IMG_20210227_165810257_HDR_resize_43 (resized).jpgIMG_20210227_165810257_HDR_resize_43 (resized).jpg

And the obligatory reflection photo:

Wow! That looks amazing. I just picked one of these up last week. I'll be sure to keep an eye on this potential museum piece!

That’s amazing work. Looks incredible. Really reflects all the hard work you’ve put into it. Thanks for sharing the before and after pictures.

Bought about $300 worth of parts last night for my game. Most of it was LEDs to be fair. I don't like the kits and build my own, so I have a spreadsheet of every bulb in the game if anyone is interested in it.

It's mostly Comet sunlights in GI. 2SMD in the playfield and inserts and 1SMD in the backbox. Some color matched inserts where appropriate and color matched flashers.

No clown puke in my "kits" haha.

Looks awesome! I should start this same process. Bought my first pin, The Simpsons DE and been fixing some other issues and testing. Next is to take the PF out, removing the mylar protector and starting to make some touch ups. My PF seems to be quite much better shape. Let's see if the protector home's off clean.

I've done a lot of work since I posted last, but the finishing touch was the new ramp from Ramp-o-Matic that is finally in place! To make it look even better I spent a few hours sanding the cut edges smooth and polishing them.

Sadly, I played a few games to test it out and forgot to add the foam at the end of the ramp. The shock of the ball slamming into the end cracked the plastic around the mounting point above the right sling. Don't do what I did and put your foam in first!! No biggie, I will do some surgery and make a mount that attaches to the side of the ramp. Stronger that way anyway.

Thanks!

Several months ago I got some cab decals. I'm still on the fence deciding whether I should restore the cabinet or build a brand new one. The cab isn't terrible but it's quite yellowed and has some pretty big scratches and gouges in a few places, so it sticks out compared to the playfield.
