Popping can be a capacitor exploding. Pull the master display board and the power supply and give a good visual check for problems. See if any capacitors looks bulged or split open.
Do you have a way to test the MPU? Would hate to have you get a new Xpin display and turns out the MPU has an issue (MPU is probably fine though).
