I have a DCS sound board that I'm trying to trace down the problem on. On boot up I get two bongs and in the error report it say sound board interface error. I have all new EPROMs in U2-U9. Got the images off IPDB. I'm using 2704 chips at 150ms the manual calls for 120ms but I don't think the faster chips are an issue? All sockets look good no corrosion. I verified continuity for all sockets. I also replaced the RAM chips to eliminate them as suspects. All this and still no change.

Can someone suggest were to go from here?

    Thanks Don

    Hi Don,

Two bongs mean S2 ROM failure.

I've seen poor sockets cause something similar.
Remove S2 (U2) and with good magnification, ensure that both wipers in each pin location look good.
    Of course, visual isn't definitive.

Thanks Chris I gave it a good look beforehand but I'll replace the socket and give it try I'll report back.

Replaced the socket no change same two bongs. Any other ideas? I looked over all the traces they looked fine.

Bent pin on one of the newly installed ROMS? I know its a trivial check, but sometimes the simple things bites us on the ass.

I appreciate the suggestion however I have checked all of them no bent legs.

Maybe the new eprom is broken.
Can you burn U2 again ?

    #8 2 years ago

Yes I replaced the U2 EProm same result two bongs...

Sound like a cop-out, but I would maybe order a set of the eproms from John Wart Jr. At least then you can rule out the eproms themselves?

Or, if you have another DCS game, swap the board into another game (swapping ROMs) to see if the problem follows.

Thanks for the replies is the issue isolated to just U2 or can one of the other EPROMs cause It? I know the manual says two bongs check U2. But I feel as though I've exhausted the options for U2.

Bummer you don't have another DCS game you can swap roms from and test in. That would be very enlightening.

I have no idea if this would make a difference but you said you used 150ms rated chips where the manual calls for 120ms, your chips are slower, not faster than rated. This is the time it takes to read any memory location so a lower number is faster.
