So I bit the bullet and grabbed me a DE GnR- Thankfully, it didn't turn out to be AS rough as I thought it was when I first saw it. It IS incredibly dirty, though.
My question: where to begin? I'm assuming cleaning- and I'm even going to further assume a complete "de-population" of the playfield- a completely through clean?
As the machine stands currently it was suggested by the seller to NOT plug it in. There is a loose leg on the board where a resistor used to be which brings me to my next question: when it comes time, should the board be entirely rebuilt? or can I get away with piecemealing the components one by one?
Any and all suggestions from the forum are greatly appreciated by me

Quoted from DumbAss:

Looks like high voltage (solenoid +50V) was possibly shorted to the WHT-VIO (row 7) wire. Might have also taken out the ICs upstream. Board repair is almost always cheaper than replacement - especially when alkaline corrosion is not involved.

Oh yes! I think I’m going to try to repair what I can and replace whatever’s too far gone. I’m going to need connectors, that’s for sure

I’m glad I’m pulling the pf out- this will give me a good opportunity to track down any visibly damaged wiring/clean it up

What would you guys suggest about stuff like this (pic attached) should I just put Mylar over it? I zoomed in and circled what I’m talking about. It looks like art is peeling around the insert but has not come completely off. I know if the ball keeps rolling across it, it eventually will

Quoted from ccbiggsoo7:

mylar is always an option, but usually sticks out like a sore thumb on little pieces here and there. id try to to either glue back down or trim off lip and retouch with paint if needed.

Genius! Thank you!!!

I’ve decided to tear down the pf to see how it cleans up. I figured out that I don’t want to jump the gun and purchase a new pf just yet. What it all boils down to is I’m in a bit deep with what I paid for the machine as-is and I want to see if I can put my skills at work to bring this old gal up to snuff.

How far can I go with this? This is with Novus 2. I tried buffing the Mylar, but it’s not coming up “clear”

Is this after you finished it off? Or did you swap out the pf?

Going to make an attempt to get rid of the big chunk of Mylar. Thanks to Jrotten for the motivation to strive for perfection. I did not want to do this, but I was able to get it to come up with my fingernail. We shall see

This is the end result
Made me sick watching all that happen in real time. Idk, looks like there’s an overlay for that part. There’s another insert that’s gonna need touch up/or a piece of Mylar over it

Shit. I suspect there are going to be a few things I’ll need to deal with- specifically the band members down below- looks like they’re gonna come up eventually. I got “lucky” that they didn’t when the Mylar came up. What’s that saying? Good is the enemy of better or something like that. Any recommendations?

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could "fix" this? I'm starting to wonder if I should lay mylar down over the band members' cross as it seems like the ball will eventually destroy the insert graphics. I'm pretty bummed about this and would like to make the best of this situation.
