The tip 122 that controls the right target bank gets hot when plugged in. Coil does not fire during game reset. This is for a data east lethal weapon. I have tried:

Checked the diode direction
Grounded the transistor. And the coil fired!
Unplug the connector to the coil and the transistor did not get hot

Whats going on?

Try a new transistor.

Ohm the coil out. It sounds like the coil might be internally shorted - or the wrong coil?

Find another coil of the same value in the game. Compare resistance.

If the transistor doesn't get hot with the coil unplugged, my money is on the transistor being fine.

If the coil doesn't fire during play, but fires if you ground the tab, and it's getting hot, you probably have a bad transistor.

Quoted from WOLF:

The transistor tested good. Why would it not get hot when the connector is unplugged?

what about the n22 or whatever pre transistor? Not all of the 122's I think have that but it is worth checking. I noticed a few bad coil diodes caused this for me as well.

I replaced the pre driver with a 2n4401 oddly it has a different ohm than the old one. I might replace it again.

Yeah, I've had them test good also, but when I replaced it everything was fine.
It probably won't get hot if there is no pull on it.

Wolf was right. The tip 122 was bad. Game works great now
