Quoted from Ive:

With the playfield as it is I'm guessing it would be a Force award ? Seeing that you need the ball to be held up whilst you do the video mode.

That seems to be logical, I was thinking perhaps prior to tri ball when the ball is held momentarily there is a good bit of trench run footage and audio during that mode. Could it I have been tied to that somehow?

On that point, it could have also been a Jabba mystery award. The ball also gets trapped in the subway during Yoda selection, so that's also an option.

Or as the light on the playfield insert says... X Mode/Video Mode.
It is one of those things were one needs to have a long chat with
John Borg. There is a video of him talking about the OEM playfield
and the changes that happened to the bottom part of the playfield.
The game had three lanes on the right side; two of the lanes were
alien eyes. Light the two eyes... trigger xyz-event.

Check the pictures in the Gallery on my website for some information.

Quoted from vec-tor:

Here ya go... Easter egg time...
1) Use either flipper button to chose Yoda feature
--- Use both flippers to defeat Darth Vader in Lightsabor round.

Anyone try this yet?

It would be interesting with today's technologies, to re-cut the five lane
designed Star Wars playfield and re-screen with the OEM Markus artwork.

I'm curious about this too. I would do it myself but I have Chad's code.

Vec-tor is just quoting what is on the prototype apron instructions. See the pics in my gallery.

Ah! No!, I had to write it down over ten years ago on R.G.P.
The guy had a Star Wars that made it through production with
a prototype apron. He was asking the same things. How do I do this,
how do I activate that, etc, etc, etc.

You sure about that? The way he mentioned the Easter egg about beating Vader during Yoda sounds like it’s still there.

It's not there... I've looked at the code. I think
that there might have been more "table " type features
that would have been with the right orbit shot.
a type of " blue light special "...
The "tie fighter" lens does nothing; but stays lit.

Ok I misunderstood then. Interesting discussion.

#3363 4 years ago

O.K.
Easter egg time...
I do not know if Chad had fixed this problem...
This is more or less an OOops.
On last ball, get/activate X-WING MULTI MILLIONS.
Drain ball before timer runs out.
The game should go to game over mode...
But the flippers are still in X-WING MULTI MILLIONS mode.
slap away at the flipper buttons to here explosions.

Thanks for posting the pictures Chad.
It has been a while since I have seen them.
Your pictures are much clearer than the ones
the guy who owned the "proto card tray"
production Star Wars game had originally
posted them on the R.G.P. message board.

Not my game. I wish! A guy sent me these pictures years ago.

Ok, I’m going to put out an ad & APB looking for a DESW prototype rom if it exists. I also sent and email to Lonnie Ropp. If anybody knows it would be him. It would be like finding the grail no doubt, but we won’t know it even exists in working order until we look.

I also have one of these. Unsure if it’s an actual prototype vs early production but I have everything that is in your prototype gallery.

Prior to upgrading my roms to chadh’s is there a way I can tell my looking at the old roms? I think I still have them in my spare part boxes.

Just pop the CPU and display roms back in and note the version numbers displayed when you turn on the game

Yeah if you find out it is, you’re gonna want to safely make a copy of it

Also, can you post some pictures of your pinball machine, including the main playfield?

BTW, here is the ad

I’ll have to take some new ones but this is what I have already uploaded elsewhere.

The Death Star also has an “inverted texture”.

Good looking prototype. Don’t want to be greedy, but when you get time take some closeups with the glass off. And find that ROM!

Looks like I’m out of luck on the rom. 1.03. No old roms in coin box

Anything of specific interest on the playfield you want a pic of?

I can’t quite make out the date stamp on the playfield.

Mine should shows :
the different apron stickers
previous instruction card that mentions the speeder mode
White starwars inserts
Curved xwing and hyperspace plastics
Rough looking r2
Smooth Death Star (inside has the normal external texture).

I wonder what serial number your game is?

Wow, so it says “Video Mode“ instead of X-Mode on the PF. Man really gets me mad the thought of Williams being the reason this got removed. Haters.

Great pictures though, you got a piece of history right there

Also, in front of the Death Star target it says "X-WING FOR MULTIBALL" instead of "X-WING FOR TRI-BALL". Williams was suing and claiming they owned the phrase "multiball". Lonnie told me he had to quickly change the video display from MULTIBALL to TRI-BALL right before one of the expos that they were debuting the game.

I really enjoy this history of early prototype games to final product, and what was the reasons for such changes. I always assumed it was a "rush it to market" scenario, not a lawsuit threat for naming and video modes. Thanks for the Info all, it would be great to bring this game back closer to how it was intended to play almost 30 years ago.

Yes, you are right... Dead lines had to be met ( movie promotions, etc ).
Williams listed Fire Power as one of the first © for the term multi-ball.
Finally, a lot of Data East Star Wars fans are compassionate about this game...
---- so much potential for an awesome game that got cut by legal matters.
In all, the existing platform that the game runs on, is not powerful enough
---- to handle all the modes and rules. It was a bit ahead of it's time.
I think it would be interesting if the game was coded and converted to the White Star
---- or Sam system platform, how the game would play.

I did have a look but didn’t photograph it.

The thing I don’t quite understand is that my machine is Australian marked. I would have though prototype/early production ones would have all be US models.

ChadH have you looked at the assets in all the older ROMs or a specific version to create the 1.07? I’m wondering if older ROMS had different assets they may have been cleared out to make space for newer revisions.

I see ROMs 1.01-1.04 posted and not sure if each have the same assets with minor code/rule changes

Those roms have codes to country factory coinage...
One of them has bad indexing for putting in your high score initials.

Such a fun game! This is the second Data East Star Wars I recently finished for a friends client.

These aren't 100% completed photos. Went back and regrained the left scoop etc.. Hope you enjoy and dont beat me up too bad. Haha.

Also enjoy the peace sign hidden under the Death Star!

Replaced all worn out plastics, polished and flame polished the rest. Polished and regrained everything metal. LEDs, Rubbers, all new boards, etc. Soild players pin. It's really fun continously learning. Every pin teaches me something new.

Once I am done with my Data East Star Trek update (coming soon!) , I will take a stab at integrating Speeder Video Mode into this game. No guarantees as I need to clear up a decent amount of ROM space, but fingers are crossed.

Yep - standard DE for the time, shallow rules but enough going on to have a lot of fun. Artwork is great, all round a great package, the transporter effect in the backbox is awesome. The star Trek sound effects, the crazy high octane DE take on the Trek music I always enjoy playing it.

O.K.
Easter egg time...
I do not know if Chad had fixed this problem...
This is more or less an OOops.
When the game is set on five balls...
On ball four.... but is most likely ball five...
Lite Taun-Taun feature.
Know activate the left or right outlane and watch the display.
Every know and then weird stuff would popup on the display as award value.
The program overshoots the award value table and takes machine code and tries to make
point values out of the code.

Quoted from ChadH:

Very true! The original ROM I worked off of only had about 500 bytes of free space. That's one half of one kilobyte. I packed as much as I could in there for my updates.
Although, since Star Wars was my first venture into the code update world, I have done several more games and I have since learned a lot more details about how everything works. I could probably squeeze even more in if I basically looked at my notes and started over. I may do this someday.
I appreciate the talks of gofundme's but I would never do that. This is all about a fun hobby in our free time. If someone wants to send over a donation after the fact, then that is much appreciated.
While I have seen the code and video assets for the Speeder Bike video mode, I have not yet found any thing for a Death Star Trench run (other than the instruction references on the prototype aprons) or a Luke/Vader Light Saber battle (again, other than the reference on the prototype aprons). I suppose the video animation played of Luke/Vader battling while hitting a shot in Jedi Returns mode might have originally been from this missing mode?
Has anyone else actually seen playable versions of these two elusive video modes? Or were they scrapped early on and never saw the light of day?
Does anyone have a prototype ROM with these modes in them? If so, PM me and I can try to make it happen.

Guy on Facebook claims to have one with the speeder code!

“Good afternoon... I happen to have a Star Wars Data East in perfect working order and condition. It is a prototype as it has the speeder bike video mode not on the production model. It is about 3/4 LEDd. Some lights could not get to and did not want to disassemble. Happy to send videos.”- https://www.facebook.com/benjamin.delong.3

Need to act fast as he was selling the machine to someone and then it will probably be lost/gone.
