Stupid question: Will any buck capable of outputting 12V work for this? I have a local robotics company that has them here in Calgary and it would save me ordering from Amazon US.

#654 3 years ago

Other then Laser War, what other games used the extra wire?

#656 3 years ago
Quoted from gdonovan:

Maybe Secret Service and Torpedo alley. Anyone who has ordered one from me with those games I have included the extra wire.

Cool beans, and its just an extra pass through wire on the unused circuit on the connector correct?

#657 3 years ago

How about a dedicated plug and play solution with a minimal footprint that you can buy off the shelf? No solder, no crimping, easy as pulling off a Z connector. Cost effective for those of you with a lot of DE games in your collection.

We're working on this as we speak. Prototype pcb’s and parts are on their way. As soon as I get them we’ll assemble them, test them on a bunch of DE pins here in the Calgary Area, make revisions if need be, and then get them out for sale.

I just finished reassembling my RBF after a full shop and that humming sound is so annoying I want to punch a hole in Rocky's face next to the DMD.

First prototypes are assembled and working on local machines. But I think we can make it better.

More to come....

Thanks! ☺️

We just tested on on a Secret Service. Definitely made an improvement.

Production boards have been finalized with a few improvements over these prototypes. We’ll have them available really soon, and enough will be made so anyone who wants one can get one. ☺️

I can definitely use one for my Robocop.
Any chance of making one for William's System 11?

Is this a big problem on the System 11 games as well? I don’t own any myself but I have access to a dozen locally if need be.

#691 2 years ago
Quoted from D-Piddy:

Really looking forward to these. My LAH cannot be on unless it is being played without that hum annoying me.

Cool Soon guys.

We're finalizing the last revision from the prototypes now for the first run of production.

I know people wan't them to be as unobtrusive as possible, which is why we aren't making them Purple, Red, White, or Blue. Final product will either be Matt Black as to blend in, or classic PCB Green (even though thats boring and you should feel ashamed if you feel they should be green ) Mind you, at the end of the day only you'll know its in there, and its not like you leave the heads open on your pins when people come over. But still! Not making them a flashy colour.

...Well, I guess blue could work too....

I'm not sure, let me know what you guys think.

#699 2 years ago

haha, all feedback on the colour noted.

Interestingly enough no PCB house I've contacted is able to do neon pink silk screen on black boards. Which is a letdown but hey all good

Quoted from radial_head:

...I prefer to have add on boards be a different color so I can TELL that something is not stock when I get a game...

Good point.

Getting closer…

Sorry for the delays, final boards have been ordered (they look bad ass!). Pricing and availability will be announced very soon. There will definitely be enough to go around. Here’s a teaser for you…

We were supposed to hear back from the vendor were trying to work with last week as we’re negotiating to try and keep the MSRP down for everyone. No word yet I’m afraid. Ball is in their court.

As for parts, due to the IC shortage we’ve had to get creative with suppliers and bought out a few US parts places. Shipping for them has been… slow. Not strait from China slow, but not the Digikey/Mouser overnight speeds we’re used to in Canada.

These will get built and we will sell them, (much sooner than later). …Well, unless Jeff and I both get hit by a bus…. But what are the chances of that happening? Haha! ☺️

1 week later
#726 2 years ago

The first batch of IC's are in,
A deal has been made with a new major pinball vendor to carry them, globally.
and its at the MSRP we were originally wanting in order to keep the price low,
Production of the first batch will be this weekend.
When they have them in hand we'll announce more details.

#729 2 years ago

Assembly on the first batch has begun.

Can you at least tell us the MSRP since that’s settled. I understand keeping the vendor on the QT till they have them.

$39.99

#738 2 years ago

Thanks guys,

Again sorry for how long this has taken. I wasn’t in the market for a new truck or a graphics card so I didn’t think the global chip shortage would have any impact on me. …I was wrong. Haha.

We wanted to keep the price under a number with a 4 in it. Obviously being Canadian and having a dollar that isn’t on par with USD, this was very important to us. Thankfully after our two month long unsuccessful attempt to do that with the first vendor we had been talking to, we approached another and made an agreement that day. All good though, no hard feelings at all.

Jeff and I have the first batch more or less done, and as soon as the rest of these stupid chips land I’ll solder them on, test each board, package them up, ship them off to the vendor, announce who that is, and you’ll all be able to buy them globally. We have no limit to how many of these we’ll make. So for whatever reason they do sell out we’ll make more. Oh also, if you’re located in the Calgary, Alberta area, we’ll have a supply to sell to you directly. The vendor we’re working with will also be supplying them wholesale to other vendors around the world in an attempt to get one in the hands of anyone who wants them.

I have a feeling that these will also work on the first few SEGA pins as well (Mav to Batman) as they run on the same hardware. I didn’t think to test them on those yet, but we have a couple of those games locally and I’ll get confirmation and post here.

Josh Brown And I will be filming an Install/first look video on The Canadian Arcade, so keep an eye out for that.
YouTube.com/TheCanadianArcade

Finally, Jeff and I have a few other projects (mostly on the arcade side of things) in the works, but are open to any suggestions for more Pinball ones. Shoot me a DM if you can think of anything we can help solve.

Im afraid we’re not going to be doing preorders, sorry.

Soon tho. Very soon. Thanks for your patience.

#750 2 years ago

Yep! We’ve worked out a deal with the vendor and they don’t mind if I sell direct after the first batch is on the way. Other vendors will buy from them too if they want, so you may end up seeing them at other places as well.

#752 2 years ago

Quick update: First batch is almost done, we ran out of coils, but those usually ship in 24h so we’ll be able to finish the first batch hopefully by end of the week. These need to be cleaned and packaged then they’ll be ready to ship to the vendor. We’ll announce a date/time and all that then drop a link for them as soon as the vendor is ready to sell.

I figured you guys might want to see a bunch of them mid production ☺️

Again, thanks for being patient.

Great stuff. Hoping you will have a UK or EU distributor

The vendor we’re dealing with ships internally and will also be wholesaling to any other business so they could find their way to a UK/EU vendor.

Quoted from ROMM:

I am definitely in for one of these devices! Just the other day I tried using nylon screws, pulling boards and floating them, and messing with the speakers and grounds, and I could not get rid of any speaker buzz.

Honestly I tried that first as well. Sadly it didn’t work.

I’m literally on my way to drop the first batch off at UPS. Should be at the vendor in a week. Keep an eye out for all the details and a video review/install coming soon.

Yep, Very soon I'll be posting in this thread the following: A link to where you can buy them, an install/review video from JoshODBrown over at The Canadian Arcade, and some better close up pictures of the filter. I'll also make a separate post on pinside announcing them, as well as release The Canadian Arcade video on all the Pinball Facebook channels we normally post on. Thanks guys!

Yeah shipping is just something beyond my control. Thats in part why we decided to wholesale them to a US vendor, otherwise from Calgary it would have been a nightmare for each of you.

On the bright side, the other vendor we were dealing with originally wanted to charge $60usd for the board, but we just did’t feel that was right. A larger cart is definitely a solid option to get a few things at once. Knowing it was a small board we wanted to make sure we partnered with one of the large suppliers.

Looks like stock is going fast, we’ll work on getting a second batch built as soon as we can get chips. Were also talking to vendors in Australia and the EU now too so that might help you international folk.

#791 2 years ago

Awesome!

Thanks for the support guys. By my count stock is starting to run low. I’m buying up as many of the IC’s as possible for the next batch, but I have no guarantee on how long that will take to replenish. Especially with the international vendors now asking for them too. If you’re on the fence, I’d pull the trigger.

#797 2 years ago

Thanks guys ☺️

Yes, kinda shocked by that, less than 36 hours. More are coming, and we’ve had interest from vendors in Australia, Europe, and even here in Canada. Were just securing more chips and looking into a second, much larger batch.

Quoted from markp99:

Waiting to "hear" some user reviews!

LOL!

#806 2 years ago
Quoted from jamex:

Unfortunately it is no longer available on the site. Do you know when it will be available again? Thanks

Yes! We have more coming, the size of the order is going to be somewhat dependent on the orders we get from the vendor. I see that you’re in Italy! We dont have a vendor there yet, but we’d be interested in one for sure.

#808 2 years ago
Quoted from jamex:

Yes I live in Italy, I hope you will be able to find a vendor in Italy, I will still order from the piballlife site because it would be the perfect solution for my JP

For sure! I’m not familiar with who the larger vendors are in Europe, any favourites to mention?

#811 2 years ago
Quoted from harig:

Is that pin soldered well?
[quoted image]

We triple checked every solder point on each individual board, but I know the occasional one on the through hole might have a slight indentation where the curvature of the pin concaves in and sucked the solder down. However Gotfrogs, please PM me a shot of the board and I’ll take a closer look. Should be fine tho.

Quoted from Gotfrogs:

One of the pads was not populated. I don’t remember the designator but it was a small smd ~603 pad in the corner. Is this intentional?
[quoted image]

Bottom left corner, yes. Was a diode we removed at the very beginning of production. Jeff changed his mind literally 5 boards in. The next run won’t even have the pads. ☺️

Quoted from Robotworkshop:

Has the power supply ever been serviced? There are a few caps on there that are known to fail and in some cases leak and start etching the traces. May be worth checking that out first. It may help some with the noise issue and even if it doesn’t it can ensure your game continues to run well in the future.
On the original sound board it may be time to have the caps replaced on that. It will cost less than any replacement board. Unless there are other parts that have failed that should help.
Nothing will eliminate all the noise but it can be made manageable.

I agree with all of this, sorry I wasn’t able to help you.

From all the feedback we’ve been getting this seems to be the only case where it was a non-existent result. You may have some other underlying conditions in the game.

Quoted from frakstar:

I would like to purchase one of the filters when they are in stock.

For sure. Keep an eye on this thread or our Instagram and we’ll let people know when the next batch (a big one) is out the door. Also talk to your local vendor, the more of them that approach us, the more we’ll make and get into everyone’s hands that want one.

So I finally got to install my Retro Noise Filter. Nothing good to report here. Actually quite bad. The moment I install the filter, my display goes dead. Won't show anything at all. Take the filter out and display is up and running again. Really weird. Anyone any idea?

Thats a new one completely. Might want to check your voltages with and without the board and report back. With how simple the board is in its operation, it sounds like your game has a pre-existing condition. Might want to also think about rebuilding your power supply.

#833 2 years ago

5v wouldn’t be a thing on our board anyways, its only working with the +12v. All the other pins are pass thru.

#847 2 years ago
Quoted from StrangeSubset1:

Update.... and this is one of those shameful ones.
Turns out it wasn't the filter. Just based on the filter extending off the board a bit further, the ribbon cable got pressed weirdly against the back of the DMD which caused the issue ‍♂️. No filter, ribbon cable free = working, lol. So I just placed the cable different to not be squeezed and the filter performs as expected.
Still humming, but a lot less. It reduces the hum about the exact same amount as a dedicated PSU.

Awesome! Great to hear you solved this I’ll keep this one In mind if anyone else has a similar problem.

No, unfortunately we just don’t have the time in a day to handle logistics for direct sales. Especially with 3 more products we have in development that we have yet to announce. This second smaller order was bought exclusively by Pinball Life. We have a MUCH LARGER third batch coming after that which will be available to any and all vendors who have contacted us since the first run. My hope is that going forward the start of the third batch will see to it that they never go out of stock again.

Keep an eye on these pinside threads and or our Instagram/facebook pages and we’ll be keeping people in the loop when the batches are ready, and when they ship out to the vendors.

Our ambition is to keep making these until everyone who wants one can get one, and then some more.

#855 2 years ago
Quoted from Shogun00:

Hopefully one of those 3 new products is a System 11 version of the board.

I’m not going to say we’re not looking into it.

#858 2 years ago

https://www.pinballlife.com/data-east-noisehum-filter.html

However the link is down as PL seems to have deactivated it after selling out their stock last time. So I can’t guarantee it will be the same one.

Production of them starts this weekend, plus time to ship, plus however long it will take PL to list them to the site.

Here’s the video as a refresher.

Quoted from Ive:

Apologies if I missed it …..will there be a UK or EU vendor for these ?

Afraid not for this batch. Pinball Life bought the whole second run. However Its a bit smaller than the one which will come after that we’ll make available to any world wide vendors who are interested.

#864 2 years ago

Getting ready to ship the next batch out to PinballLife! Should arrive in a few days so keep an eye out.

Also, we’ve removed the key pin from the top connector in this batch so you won’t need to take the key plug out of the power cable. Couldn’t find a reliable source for the tiny plastic plugs for the lower connector, so as always please check your work when installing.

UPDATE! These are all spoken for! More are on the way soon, and we'll post in the group/Pinside/Our social media/etc as soon as they are available. Thanks folks.

Limited Edition? Whaaaa?
*** THESE ARE NOW SOLD OUT!!!***
Ok, so we made 10 of these as a pathway towards our next big run. Figured we’d number them and offer them as direct sale. Do they do anything different then the other ones? No. Are they any better than the green ones? Not really unless you like matte black. Are they really anything different? We’ll, kinda, the pcb is a couple millimetres larger, and the logo is bigger if that matters? We also ditched the silkscreen on the top to give it a “stealth” look, cause matte black/white/silver is cool. Do you need this if you already have one on your game? No, not at all, they work just as good as the green ones, and even the yellow prototype I use in my R&B&F. Oh, I also added little gold numbers (out of 10) to each with a paint pen, just to be a bit extra.
*** THESE ARE NOW SOLD OUT!!!***
We’re going to be offering these first come first serve, limit 2 per person, Price will be $39.95 USD per filter, plus exact shipping. Payment will be thru PayPal. If you want a couple, message me direct with: your Full Name, Address, PHONE NUMBER (for customs), email, and if you want one or two boards. Over the weekend I’ll get exact shipping quotes and get back to you with your total and the PayPal address to send the payment to. Oh and we’ll ship world wide, (Except to Russia for obvious reasons…). *** THESE ARE NOW SOLD OUT!!!***

Ok, good news and bad news…

We know quite a few of you have been waiting very patiently for our next run of boards to arrive. And the good news is that they are here. Fresh in from the factory. HUNDREDS of them.

Now the bad news, you can’t buy them yet and the wait time is going to be a bit longer. Unfortunately there is a global shortage (as in ZERO stock) across over a dozen parts suppliers for the molex connectors on the bottom of the board. We have some that could arrive as soon as early September. As soon as they do we’ll install them, test the boards, package them, and ship them off to our vendors.

Speaking of which, we’ve added Marco’s to the vendor list. We’re still looking for a vendor in Europe and we’ll hopefully have a couple in Australia finalized by the time the connectors land.

Parts shortages suck. Thank you for your patience.

Oh! Also, here’s a look at our new Version 1.1 of the board. Stealth black on the top, slightly smaller footprint, same great functionality.

Keep an eye out here or on our Facebook/Instagram pages for availability. When these are ready we’ll be launching them globally on the same day across all vendors. Shouldn’t be too long now.

I just added a ColorDMD (XLED) to my Baywatch and now I can really enjoy the how well the White North Retro HumBucker works! She is all music and pin noises now...No more 12v hum or DMD buzz! Money well spent.

Nice! Glad to hear it.

For everyone else, these are going to be back in stock later this week/early next week. More info to follow.

This one appears to have status LEDS for all the voltages.

Baahaha. Nice.

This is why we chose to make a custom board. Less parts to fail, no potentiometer that could potentially fry someone’s board if it drifted or somebody adjusted it, and we could control the quality of the parts.

I’m sorry for not mentioning sooner that the rotten dog board would not fit on early soundboards. I feel like I had an obligation to say something when I noticed its shape. That’s part of the reason why ours is shaped the way it is.

I want to ensure everybody that more money does not mean more better when it comes to this issue. This is why we’re not charging $70 for our board. This is also the reason why we kept the part count low to keep the costs low. For how this circuit works you can most definitely buy a two dollar boost/buck and wire it up like the original ones in this thread, or pay $68 more for one soldered to a $3 custom pcb with LEDs.

Keep in mind the design of our/this board/idea is very simple, only the +12 V line is used in the circuit. Everything else is simply a pass-through. The only way to completely remove any buzz or hum is by switching to a pinsound board.

Also some news on our end, we’ve added Flippers.com and Retro Arcade Specialists in the UK to our list of vendors. We’ve also opened up international sales on our own website. We’ve got a few options for shipping and competitive rates via Canada Post. However we are still looking for an Australian vendor so we can get them into the hands of you pinheads in the outback, quicker and cheaper.

Installed the White North buzz killer in my Data East Back to the Future. Certainly lowered the buzz and I think I notice a slightly cleaner sounding audio but that could just be me. When I initially boot up the game it loudly buzzes at first but I guess it just takes a minute for the adapter to kick in.

That sounds like an issue on your power supply. Remember, our board is VERY simple, there is no warm up time, or processing needed that would give it time to “Kick in”. I’d maybe investigate the 12v line with your meter. Glad you’re enjoying the board though. ☺️

As a general FYI: We've been seeing some mixed results with our board (White North Retro) and the odd rotten dog power supply lately. Most notably poor output from the RD boards adversely affecting the 12v line to the soundboard. Which is not something even our filter can solve for. Also, if your stock PSU is in desperate need of a rebuild that's something that only a discrete power supply for your sound board (or a PSU rebuild) can solve.

Quoted from wayout440:

The filter is only good in limited cases. The problem is much more complex when analog and digital supply voltages are not isolated properly on the soundboard itself, which is a huge design flaw with Data East products.

Well, I wouldn't say "limited" cases. In the last year based on our sales (over 600 units globally) with the feedback we've gotten its been a VERY small number of cases (5) where the board did little to nothing, (which was always fixed in conjunction with a PSU rebuild). An even smaller number (3) of cases where the user installed the board with the cable upside down (frying their sound board)... we've since key'd them to further prevent that. And 1 single case where our board was faulty. I'm pretty happy with those numbers.

Chance has been great following up with me about my White North Board btw. We are still working out troubleshooting on mine.
Chance, have here been any changes to the board on this recent batch? Even a substitute supplier for one of the components?

Thanks! No, nothing that could cause any kind of reduction in quality or operation. Changes have all been cosmetic (well, and keying the connectors).

Quoted from radial_head:

I've tried the white north, an amazon generic buck boost, and a separate power supply. The white north and the generic buck boost completely sent my Rocky and Bullwinkle into a frenzy. Mpu went nuts. All sorts of chaos. On my Baywatch, they white north worked somewhat, the amazon one worked then sent the sound board into a complete tizzy (began making jumbled noises).
The isolated power supply worked best. I tap into the DBA harness power wiring, and run a new connector up the backbox through the wiring harness tube. Worked on both. Dead silent, and didn't interrupt the DBA wiring harness.

What PSU does your R&B have? And has it ever been worked on?

For clarification we developed the WNR board using my personal R&B&F.

I just noticed different version of this at pinball life. Looks like Anarchy PCB has one out now:
https://www.pinballlife.com/de-hum-eliminator.html
Is this a clone of the one from White North Retro? This one looks identical except for the orientation of the regulator IC. Or is this the replacement for the White North Retro? This looks like a direct clone/copy.

I'm not really sure what I should or shouldn't say lest I get ripped apart by the PL dedicated crowd. But to hell wth it, here's a whole timeline...

==========
TL/DR: We've been told by other members of the community that the Anarchy one is Terry and Scott's version of our board. It's been directly copied. Not authorized by us in any way. Colours, design, layout, everything.

We only discovered it because we had a person reach out to us with faulty board that we couldn't find in our system (we've sold a few thousand of these now, so its hard to keep track of everyones name ). They didn't show up in any of our sales info, so when they sent us a picture of the board we immediately knew.

Long story short, We didn't have any exclusivity agreements with Pinball Life that we wouldn't sell our board anywhere else. Period.
==========

Ok, now the LONG version:

Anyone who's followed this whole thread over the last couple of years has seen the progression of our board. In early 2021 I reached out to gdonovan to buy one of his boost/buck versions for my Rocky & Bullwinkle. Gary informed me that he probably wasn't going to make any more, at least not any time soon, I mentioned that if that was the case I wanted to make some myself and possibly go about making a Canadian Arcade video on how people could make them. He didn't mind anyone else doing them but he wasn't interesting in participating.

I spent some more time researching this thread and realized that this could be a really cool project so I reached out to my buddy Jeff (who's WAY more knowledgeable at PCB design than I am). We had been playing with a few ideas of simple electronics we wanted to see in the Pinball and Arcade hobby and a dedicated device to help with this problem seemed like a good way to get our feet wet and fund some larger ideas we had in mind.

After a few prototypes, countless hours, and multiple revisions, I reached out to my contacts at Marcos to see if they were interested in it. We decided to bring the board to them first because my day job was batshit crazy and personally didn't have the time to spin up the ecomm and logistics ourselves, (even though that's what I did professionally at one point before). However after a couple sessions of talks we just couldn't come to a price we wanted to keep it at to be low enough for people outside of the US to justify the expense, (we've always been pretty solid on the "Keep it under $40 USD" idea). We're Canadian, and $40+ USD with shipping and duties turns into $80 Canadian REALLY fast. I couldn't imagine what it would be for people outside of North America. Plus it's a simple board, it shouldn't be stupid expensive. I Honestly get it, Marco wasn't the bad guy here, they have to make money too to keep the lights on, we just couldn't agree on numbers.

Anyways, after we couldn't come to terms with Marco we amicably parted ways. Later that day I sourced some contact information for Terry at Pinball Life and sent him an email. Terry emailed me back right away and we jumped on a call together. We talked for about an hour about the product and he wanted to make sure he wasn't stepping on Marco's toes. I explained the situation and under his suggestion we both agreed that we would be allowed to sell to other people at any time. Terry ordered the first 50 and a short time later the first batch was delivered to PL. They went live and sold out in under 24 hours.

Not long after that we also shipped large orders to places in Vancouver, Europe, and Australia. We probably put a good 600 of them out in the wild. Then the chip shortage happened and we ran dry. Terry and Scott offered to help us source the lone IC on the board, but when they couldn't find them we sat for a few months waiting for more to be available at a reputable supplier. Jeff and I always wanted quality parts that came from suppliers that we could verify. We didn't want cheep knockoffs that would fail when you plugged them in, (yeah, that happens at the component level too...) We spent extra money on the good stuff. Prices for parts started to go up, we kept our wholesale costs for vendors like PL the same and personally ate the difference when the BOM skyrocketed. Our goal was to keep the price down.

The boards became popular, and by this point we had gotten noticed by some of the higher ups at Marco. Much like the other resellers in other countries did we were now being approached by them to buy some boards. Not realizing the history, we filled them in, they asked if there were any exclusivity deals, we assured them there weren't and with new chips FINALY on order we sold them a small batch of 50. Just to test the waters, but again with no guarantee we'd sell them more or make anything exclusive.

A week later when we announced in this thread and on social media that the boards were going to be on sale again from both PL, Marco, and our own site (that I finally had time to set up), I got a very nasty phone call from Terry. He spent the next 30 minutes talking down to me and was angry that Marco had them for sale. I explained to him that we had all agreed that there was no exclusivity, Marco had bought a small batch, and we had no guarantees to continue to do business with them after that. At the end of the call Terry had agreed to make another larger order from us. Again, we had no exclusive deals with PL. Nothing on contract, no verbal agreements, nothing.

Those boards sold out in less and 48 hours. Very shortly after a new board showed up on Terry's site, The Rottendog one. Almost double the price of ours, but we knew right away that it was a fraction of the cost to make. They were using the off the shelf boost/buck converters soldered to a simple custom PCB with a couple status LEDs. We also knew right away that it wouldn't fit most of the older Data East sound boards as the early revisions of the DE board had components that stuck out and wouldn't allow the user to plug it in, (hence why our board was shaped like an upside down letter "T") So now Terry had an inferior, competing product on his site, but at double the price of our custom one? Personally I felt It was kinda an insult to the consumer at that point. In my eyes It was a blatant money grab and a bit of a slap to the face that he would chew me out over the phone, yet had this other one waiting in the wings to sell.

Jeff and I kinda joked about making a copy of the Rottendog board, that we should post it for sale on our own site. A copy of a copy. We figured we would make 10 of them (a minimum run for the PCB company we were dealing with), solder an Aliexpress boost buck to them (we bought 10 from Amazon for $3.50 Canadian each). All in all our BOM would have been $11 Canadian. We were going to list them for the same crazy $70 USD price as PL had listed, and in the product description we were going to absolutely insist you NOT to buy them from us. We would point you to how good our original board was, that although it didn't have LEDs, it was compatible with your game and insist you spend half the price on our original, rather than our copy of the copy. We didn't end up doing any of that. We decided that the passive aggressive thing honestly just wasn't us, and ignored it. Our board was still selling well. We got over it.

By this point Jeff and I decided to stop selling to PL based on a few factors: A. The call where Terry had chewed me out. B. The fact that we had spun up our own site. C. Marco/the other worldwide vendors were much more easier to deal with, and D. The fact that PL had the Rottendog board now.

...Actually huge shout out to Marco here, they've been incredibly supportive.

Not long after we received an alert that a very large shipment of the ICs we use on our board was available. Connectors too, now that I think about it one of the delays for inventory was a global shortage of one of the connectors. Regardless, Jeff and I jumped at the opportunity and made a MASSIVE run. We wanted enough of them to be able to hold people over for a few months rather than a few days that they were taking to sell out. This way we could focus on finishing up the development of our next product. We held some inventory for ourselves, handed out a couple to some locals, and Marco took a large chunk.

Thats when we discovered the Anarchy board.

Now, I know how long it takes to produce boards in China. I know the work that goes into designing even simple electronics like this. And I've been told that Terry and Scott have done this before to others. What really sucks is that Jeff and I are not a big massive company. We've been pushing from Day One to keep the price low, the product quality high, and the implementation simple. If you've bought one of our boards you might be able to tell that we took time to make a good looking product. When I first decided to make something myself for my newly acquired Rocky&Bullwinkle I wanted something easy to use. I wanted something that was purpose built, a clean install. I Realized after talking to Gary that I didn't want it to have possibly janky knock off chips on a $3.50 mass produced part that was designed to adjust a range of voltages in a DIY circuit. One that could fail or had a ton of extra useless circuitry. I didn't want a potentiometer to adjust voltages that could drift, It has one job: clean up the 12v line going into my sound board. Along the way Jeff and I made something were proud of, we had hand tested and hand packaged thousands of them, (all of them actually have been installed and tested in one or both of my R&B&F, and Jeffs Secret Agent). We hand soldered hundreds of connectors, scrubbed boards for hours to get the residue flux off. Our wives helped us meticulously package each one with the sticker at just the right place on the bags, the cards at just the right angle to fit. If you were buying something from me I wanted to be proud of it. If I was taking your money I wanted you to get something well presented and of good value. We were very open and honest that it might not work for everyone, but we wanted to provide the opportunity to everyone who was interested. On top of it all, Pinball gets expensive and we wanted to provide it all at a fair price.

And that hard work shows: In the interest of full disclosure we've now made and sold almost 2000 of these boards worldwide. As mentioned we've hand tested every one in our own games. We've had exactly 2 fail. Of the rest that we know of we've had 4 instances of user error where they were plugged in wrong (since then we've revised the board by properly keying the connectors to make that virtually impossible). We've had about 15 cases where we've been contacted by buyers saying that it didn't work for them at all (most of these were later attributed to other factors in their games: Bad PSU, old caps on the sound board, etc.), and a couple people's expectations just didn't meet reality (which is total fair). We're always open to them and make suggestions for fixes, up to and including buying a PinSound board. Because to us, it's really not about the money, we want you to be less annoyed with your games and get back to the point: These are just pinball machines, they're supposed to be FUN.

At the end of the day to be clear, I don't want drama (but I know it's coming...), I'm not speaking on behalf of Jeff or anyone else. This has all definitely been on my mind the last couple weeks, especially when we found out that we're not the first people Anarchy/PL has done this to. I just personally know better now not to deal with PL ever again.

On a personal note I can't lie to you and say the little extra money here and there from the boards hasn't been helping keeping me afloat over the last year with the Film industry shut down due to the strikes. Like myself there are a lot of people in my line of work that are still waiting for film and television productions to ramp up again. In fact, aside from a few bucks Jeff and I each pocketed, every other penny we've made that wasn't used for parts, stickers, instruction cards, soldering supplies, better packaging, the occasional upgraded shipping to surprise and delight, brokerage fees from china, failed prototype run costs, ecomm fees, trips to the post office to hand deliver your orders to a human (rather then dumping them in an outgoing mailbox) has gone back into development of our next project. We knew the boards would get ripped off. We knew if you have a decently successful product that it was only a matter of time before a Chinese factory started making bootlegs. But the last thing we expected was Terry and Scott.
