+1 here. Hook is a great looking game but the scoring is so uneven and frankly messed up. I would get it, you will like it. When Chad's code is done, you will love it.

I had a similar problem and it was a broken wire on one of the switches in the ball trough. Those switch wires can break or get disconnected when lifting or setting down the playfield. That or a broken solder joint on a diode (or bad diode) on those same switches.
Marco Specialties has them. Don't remember what the wire size is but they carry both red and orange color code. I think red is for 22g wire. You can also use a larger IDC connector like an 11 pin if you have one and cut it down. FYI, usually when a connector burns the header needs changing too, little more involved job, DYI not recommended if you don't have board repair soldering/desoldering experience.
