I recently got a custom Brian Holderman Cherry Atomic translite from Ken Cromwell’s retheme project and wanted a nifty way to showcase it in the game room. At 28.5 x 25.5, it’s a bit of an odd size for any off-the-shelf light boxes available, so custom box it is.

I kinda feel like it should be a wedgehead, so I sketched up a rough idea of what I’m going for. I already have a few led strips from an old project, and am really trying to use up materials laying around rather than run to the hardware store.

What I do have in abundance is 3/4” foam board insulation and aluminum tape. After 20 minutes of razor and tape work, it started to take shape in the 3rd dimension. I’m a bit shocked it took paint as well as it did.

LEDs routed and aluminum tape used to clean up rough edges. Plug it in and it comes alive! As big as it is the whole box only weighs a few ounces. I poked two holes in the back panel and reinforced them with more tape before passing some zip ties through to hang it with.

And...done! About an hour of work and the big blank hole in the wall is filled!

Appreciate the kind words! My wife said I should have made props for Pee Wee's Playhouse as zany as the design is. I may make some stencils to put some retro shapes on the frame in true wedgehead style.
