Hello, my friend is an engineer and works with a company that makes aluminum skins for R2D2's and thought he'd make a custom grill for his Stern Star Wars. I asked for the template so I could make one for my Guardians of the Galaxy and said there needs to be a minimum order of 10 and each would be $125, give or take. I have 5 people who are already interested, I just need 5 more people. These would be raw, and all the holes are there so you can replace your Pro, Premium, or Limited plaque.

Most of y'all can primer and matt black these yourself. Anyway, this image is a rough idea, it will be like this but it can change a bit. I have to make sure a bunch of pieces don't fall out after its cut.

Pending the final design are there 5 more people that would want one? They will be laser cut out of aluminum and bent to fit just like the originals.

I would only take deposits or payment once everyone involved approves, and I am about to place the order.

So I did the first image just to see what I could get away with on design.

I went in this weekend and spent more time on it versus what I can send them immediately due to time crunch.

But here are the 3 designs I came up with, I like C the best.

Once again, these will be about $125 and cut and bent to fit the sterns perfectly.

Besides me the other 4 people want me to try something with a honey comb element so I am going to do 2 more designs tonight. If I do too many designs too many people will chime in but I will probably remove A and C, seems like they all like B the best.

#4 5 years ago

So I took input from the other 4 people who wanted one. I knew just because I like something doesn't mean it will sell, so the other 4 people are 4 completely different players with different tastes. Together we voted on this design. Once again these will be raw aluminum and will be about $125 - $150 a piece. I have access to an acrylic cutter so I am going to cut a square acrylic frame and attach LED's to mine.

I am going to paint mine orange, I like mine looking comicky.

I can also send it to you matte black, paint yours orange with mine.

I have to order 10 minimum. And I will be eating 5 so if I buy all of them I am going to paint 4 matte black, possibly 1 in orange. Attach LEDS to one for sure.

Think about this, the stock Stern one sells for $160.

Quoted from ATLpb:

I want one, orange

You've got it.

4 left. And like I said if I am left with a few I am going to paint 1 or 2 add Led's and such and probably ask $300 or so. Like I said Stern's are $200ish (might be wrong about that)

After waiting and waiting and waiting these will be ready in one week. I am having 20 made, 5 are spoken for and 15 are available and they are raw aluminum, to the EXACT specs as the factory, and $140. They are raw so you can paint them or have them powdercoated.

15 left.

#8 5 years ago

This is a major fabrication shop here in DFW, they were helping with this in their free time and we had about 5 back and forths until we had an EXACT fit. It just took a second but when they are made it will be quick like a bandaid.

Quoted from Micky:

Would you be able to post to Australia? If so I'm interested.

Yeah you have to pay for shipping. I've shipped a lot of stuff over your way.

1 month later
#16 5 years ago

Yeah unfortunately I am at the whim of the machine shop. They promised us that they'd have them before they moved to their new shop and they are moving to the shop next week. They are doing these while working with other customers but at this point I am a paying customer and it's been almost 6 months.

It's still happening. My friend is having some Star Wars ones made and once those are done they are doing GOTG. I really am sorry it's taking so long which is why I didn't want to take deposits. They are coming soon.

Now that they have the design for the grill done, I can almost do any game that is Spike 2 as long as there are 10-20 people interested...and assuming people don't mind waiting.

4 weeks later
#17 5 years ago

So these are supposed to be cut this week. I asked if I should collect deposits and my friend said given their inability to give us definite delivery times to wait until they are in my possession. But he was told it's supposed to be this week.

But after 8 months of making a prototype and refitting them and having to redesign it we have the correct design, I think we can design whatever we like for the speaker grills and just place it on top of what we have.

Ok they're almost ready. These will be ready to ship next week.

List of those who want one. These are raw aluminum and will be $140 + shipping. Kind of a deal considering that Stern factory grills are $190.

These are now ready, I was busy for the past few weeks and didn't even have time to think about this.

I will post pictures tomorrow, they are ready to go and I can have them at TPF if you wish. They are at the shop I do my work at and I just can't leave work today to go take pictures.

They ended up slightly more expensive than expected so instead of $140 they are $150. Once again the Stern factory ones are $190 so you are getting these for WAAAY less than the factory one.

If we had a prior agreement for $140 I will still honor it.

These are raw aluminum. Powdercoating shouldn't be too bad on these. One friend is trying to have it powdercoated to match his LE and doesn't know the color code, if you do please let us know.

I am going to paint mine orange, if you want yours orange say so.

#25 5 years ago

Here you go folks. I am so sorry it's taken time with these we are busting our butts getting ready for TPF.

These are ready and will have a few for sale at TPF. For those that have paid I will have these ready to ship not this weekend but the weekend after. I really appreciate your patience on this.

So here it is painted and mounted. Everything went perfect.

The only issue is the center of the "o" the attachment for it is pretty thin. Everything else is fairly good. I broke the center of the "o" off just to show you what would have if yours is to snap off. You just have to be gentle with it.

If you this is something that bothers you and you have already paid please talk to me, it does not bother me though. All the others will still be attached but it may come off. But you can still clearly see it says "of the"

The "R" could also cause problems but once again just be gentle. Even if that breaks off it still looks good.

This was a one time thing. A company said they may want to start using my friends template but I doubt he would get the rights to use this GOTG logo.

Once again if this causes any problems for you please let me know and we'll work something out but it is not something that bothers me.

This was a SUPER EASY install btw. Just a swap of parts really

#28 5 years ago

Once again you will have to be gentle with these. But this is what is WOULD look like if the "r" part broke off. This is photoshopped.

Hey folks, TPF is over and I got the shipping quotes for everyone. These will cost about $20 to ship within the US. I have about 5 of these left so if you want one act quickly because I won't get the opportunity to make these again.

A company is going to try to work with a manufacturer but once again I don't know if they will get the rights to use certain logos and such. When Disney is involved I don't know how easy it is but I know they usually aren't concerned with small runs.

Anyway, Neil McRae is the only one who actually is holding his because he picked it up in person at TPF so hopefully he chimes in on the quality of these.

Hey folks, things have finally calmed down after TPF, 2 of these are out for shipping.

A few of these left, I painted this one clear orange over the raw aluminum and it didn't work well, so I cleaned it with acetone and got all of it off and repainted it with black sparkle paint them hit it with a few coats of gloss clear.

This is the only one in this color, I just saw the paint at Home Depot and figured why not.

I'm asking $160 + $20 shipping on this one. Let me know if you are interested.

Quoted from ScottyC:

Not sure if there are anymore of these left but man they look awesome with the deluxe speakerlights kit! After several months of receiving mine I finally got around to installin it. Thanx again!

That looks incredible!!!! I still have a few left of these but I don't think anyone actually posted pictures besides me. I still one I need to send to modfather I feel like an ass for not getting that out sooner. I've just been so busy I don't even have time for myself.

Quoted from Radradryan:

Would you be able to send me the file for the blank template? I'd be interested in designing my own graphics then sending the file to you to have it laser cut. If you have an .svg or .dxf file that would be great.

It's a little more complicated than that. You'd have to order a minimum of 10-20 from the place that has them made. They are actually cut by water jet (I think) then they have to bend them to be the EXACT shape as the ones from the factory.

This process is kind of difficult we just lucked out on a place that said "Yeah we can make that"

It took 6 months of them doing prototypes before one fit perfect. They were doing these for me between "real work". If you really want to make one you'd have to order 10 or 20 of your own then sell them. I think there are 4 or 5 left. It took this long of non aggressive sales to get rid of most of them.

#41 4 years ago

Hey folks I have 5 of these left, I am buying a new guitar and need some scratch. So I will do the next 3 of these for $120 + shipping.

#42 4 years ago

bump. I need to get rid of these. Not quickly enough to take a bath but $120 is more than fair on these.

These used to be $189 but you can see how much the factory ones are. $120 for a custom one is not me gouging.

Still have 3 ready to be shipped. These will NEVER be available again.

#45 4 years ago

Folks I am needing surgery, nothing major but I have some out of pocket costs. I still have 3 of these boxed up and ready to go. Raw and I'll do $100 +$20 so $120 shipped on the last 3 available to the public. I will have them shipped out a week from today.
