Very impressive.
Can you expand on the decals? I assume you wet them, then slide them on and wait for them to dry. Then clear coat to protect? Are they special, as in 'extra thick', etc? Is this something you can print at home, or are the inks special and places like Staples or a print shop is a preferred source? Sorry for all the questions - sounds interesting!

I installed the playfield tonight. I still have a few things to do before I turn on power. It didn’t work when I started so there won’t be any surprises.

Thanks photo - that was an interesting read. I've read Vid's threads numerous times but never saw that section, I guess understandable considering that's a huge thread.

Damn, that looks sharp. I thought mine looked good all original. Looks like chopped liver next to that work of art...

I have a few small things to fix, but it works and I’m calling it done. I’ve learned a lot from this project and for the most part it’s been enjoyable. Now that this project is finished I realize how much time and money goes into this type of restoration. Never again will I question the price of the professionally restored machines. The best part is that the game is very fast and I’m enjoying it. It was worth every hour and $ spent.

I know I said it was finished, but the original backglass always bothered me. Awhile ago I ordered a reproduction from BGResto. It arrived today and I’m very happy with it. They do outstanding work and I would use them again. As usual I took several pictures.

Looks very nice. What is the reasoning behind the tape around the edges of the glass?

The tape seals the edges to prevent the art from lifting and from moisture. It also helps to keep the glass from shattering.

One of these days I’ll break 1000.

It can be done. Getting the target at 300 helps a lot. I’ve found the best strategy is to keep the ball up in the 10 point bumpers and grinding it out.

Thanks, I’ll keep trying. What did you set your extra game knocker to?

#167 4 years ago

I still have a number of projects to finish (pop bumper and flipper rebuilds, balky replay counter) but the game is completely playable as is. For test purposes I am using very easy settings - 700, 900, 1100, 1300. 5 ball game.

That said I recently had a game over 2K (honest!). I know I got at least a couple of 300s.

I finally broke 1000.

What’s behind the big black square on the backglass? I see the glass has a window there but the pics just shows a black square

They're subway doors which open for a second or two revealing a comical scene of gentleman with a tuba being shown the exit by the conductor. The doors open and close quickly, and is meant to be an "attract mode" feature for onlookers rather than the player.
There's a similar feature on Gottlieb's "Sky Line", which simulates elevator doors.

Funny, I just picked up a Space Mission. I can put it next to my Cross Town...

I’m happy to report my Crosstown is still working great and I still enjoy playing it. During the restoration I made a decision to clean, paint and reuse the original rusty coin door and plate. The compromise always bothered me. Recently I decided the game deserved a new coin door and to install the remainder of the coin acceptor parts. I’m missing the 10 cent coin mechanism as well as the coin return housing and coin return cover. If anyone has these parts I’d like to hear from you. I attached a few pictures that show the new parts, the parts I need and what the front of the game looks like now.

I found sources for the parts I’m missing. Instead of waiting I installed my new coin plate and door today. I kinda miss the white door, but this does look good.

Which do you think looks better the new door or the original painted door?

I’m still trying to find a 10 cent coin mechanism, but everything else is complete.
