Quoted from Silverstreak02:This is the first coat of Dover White.
And a note to say that I worked with Jeff Miller to get stencils developed for Crosstown when you are ready to paint the cab.
Cigamkcalb your playfield has a much better starting point than mine. I’m sure it will look and play great when you’re done. I see you do autocross with the Miata. That was my plan when I bought it in 2002, but I never did. I stopped beating on it in favor of the project below. It took four years to build.

I wish I knew that before I made my own. It would have been easier and he lives across town. Mine came out OK, but I bet his are better.

Thanks for the kind words. It seems like it will never get finished, but I keep moving (crawling) forward. The key lines are almost done. Using the pen has been a challenge.
Quoted from Silverstreak02:I made stencils to paint the blue rectangles on the white background. I cut them with an exacto knife.

You are a patient fellow. I just happened across this project (as I may have a project Cross Town on my hands soon). Nice work so far. Keep it up!

For sure! I would have just sought out a parts game with a better playfield.
Lotsa work. You're doing great!
Quoted from cigamkcalb:Looking good. I have two Cross Towns that I am in the process of taking the best of both to make one really nice one. Current state is completely apart and occupying the dining room. When I got to the picture of your cabinet outside in the driveway in particular, I had to laugh a little as I also have a 2003 Miata Shinsen Edition. Is the Miata also yours? Pictures are my Cross Town playfield before restoration (still in progress) and my Miata. I applaud you doing all the paint yourself. For mine, I decided to have a couple buddies who specialize in cabinet and playfield restoration do my painting as I know my limits and I wanted this to be done well. I will be doing all the electro-mechanical rebuilds and the final assembly. I will enjoy following the progress of your project. Thanks for sharing it.[quoted image][quoted image]
Your playfield looks pretty good actually.

Ryan, you can't have mine...

I MAY have found one that is not yours.
Quoted from Silverstreak02:I applied the decals.[quoted image]
Neat! Looking good! Any chance of some close-ups of those decals?
Sometimes a step forward brings a step back. That happened today when I was spraying a layer of clear to lock down the decals. I followed my normal procedure and didn’t notice the yellow 10 decal had come loose when I blew off the play field. I sprayed two mist coats followed by a light coat before noticing the misplaced decal. In a panic I decided to scrap it off. When that didn’t work I grabbed some sand paper and made it worse. I’ll regroup later and try to fix it. The square area surrounded by black smudge is the problem.

Man, what a bummer. Sorry to hear this. Fixable, I'm sure, but certainly not what you want to deal with. Good call stepping away for a bit. You've got this!!!
Quoted from RyanClaytor:Nice. How did you end up fixing that section of blue at the bottom?
I sanded the area after the clear was dry for a couple days.
Thanks for the kind words. I’ve learned a lot so far and know I can do better next time. For a newbie I’m happy with it.
It's nice looking now. I hope the next part goes easier for you. Just think when this is all set and playable you either will swear off this kinda of project ever again or find yourself eyeing up the next one. Now having gained the experience and knowledge doing this one.
I keeping thinking i need to stop buying games that need work but watching this thread just makes think if you can do why can't I.
My focus lately has been cleaning contacts and working on the mechanisms. The back box is reinstalled and the bottom board has been replaced and reinstalled. I cleaned as much as I could although I gave up on the polishing. I also installed an on/off switch. I’ve reached the point where I want to be finished. Here are a few pictures.

I glued a piece of wood to the bottom of the cabinet, added a metal plate and a DPST switch. I then ran a new power cord to one side of the switch and then extra (blue wires) to the transformer and fuse.

looks great, thanks for the info.
I went back to the playfield and did the sanding and buffing thing. I started with 600 grit to get things level and then went to 800, 1000, 1200, 1500, 2000 and then 2500. I then took out my new buffer and had at it with Maguires medium cut followed by swirl remover and a couple coats of wax. It still has some swirl marks and isn't a perfect mirror, but is very smooth. I think has the right shine for an EM. I can’t wait to start putting it together.

You’re right. I just sent them an e-mail.
Quoted from Silverstreak02:...water slide decals...
[quoted image]
Very impressive.
Can you expand on the decals? I assume you wet them, then slide them on and wait for them to dry. Then clear coat to protect? Are they special, as in 'extra thick', etc? Is this something you can print at home, or are the inks special and places like Staples or a print shop is a preferred source? Sorry for all the questions - sounds interesting!
