All, recently dodged a bullet with a scam artist (thankfully). I wanted to share the details of this story with you guys and hope that nobody else actually gets taken advantage of. While these scam artists aren't perfect, they are getting better, be careful.

Found an ad on craigslist not in my hometown but near where my parents live. I sometimes check there in case there is something along the way that I can pickup!

    I found the ad below:

    1 (resized).png1 (resized).png

I emailed the ad and got the following back.

    ---

RULE 1 attention : we report many defects but others can be visible on the pictures , so please check the photos , your eye can see better than ours!!!
RULE 2 attention : our pinballs aren't revised ! Many pinballs are 20/30 years old and can have errors on test report , any bulbs ,lamps, rubber or coils which are missing or need changing !!

    ---

I wrote him back saying I wanted to talk to him on the phone.. He calls me (his number is 213-761-1930, a Los Angeles area code) Here is where it gets "professional" scammer level.

Some of the games I wanted were already spoken for, bummer.. He says he is in Los Angeles, but his games come from France, the guy speaks fluent French, and I even exchanged a few pleasantries with him in French. Cool, I've heard about containers from italy, etc.

So I cherry picked a few others I thought I would want, and asked for detailed pictures.. playfields, etc.

I got an 5 emails back from Richard Keynes ([email protected]) outside of craigslist since I gave him my email and he sends several high resolution pictures of the games, exactly as I asked for, I even did a google image search and the pictures were "unique" at least to google.. Meaning, it hadn't seen them posted anywhere else. Good news right? Scammers usually steal images from silly places.. like ipdb, or ebay. I've attached all these pictures in the hopes that if they show up somewhere else, at least people can see they are tied to these scammers.

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0BwELC99UyMd4UkVocDZVSVZDbGc

I noticed that the coin doors were marked w/ "Fr" the denomination for French Franc's

We finally whittle it down to 5 games that I think are worth pulling the trigger on. I've done my research against the games I want, I know what he's asking what they are worth.. When I ask him how much he wants, he totals up the number and says 17,700 (which is the right amount, he's playing the role of a real business man here..)

We do the negotiation dance, and he is pretty firm on pricing making me really work to squeeze this deal out of him, and finally after a "convincing" negotiation I've got him down to 13,500 for these 5 games. But, I tell him before I send money I'd like to talk to someone that he's done business with before.

He sends me the email of someone not far from me (about an hour+) that he conveniently has sold games to recently. Here is the snippet of our dialogue.

    ----
    Arthur,

I was given your email by Richard Keynes, a pinball supplier from Los Angeles. I'm placing a large order with him and asked him for a reference. He mentioned you have purchased a few machines from him in the past. Could you spare a few minutes for a phone call to let me know about your experience? I would sincerely appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    --

    His reply:
    Hi Mr. (lastname),

just got your email, I'm on vacation in Mexico with family. maybe gonna give you a ring tomorrow if needed. I got 3 machines from him, he is a serious guy. I hope to buy 1 more in February.

    Cheers

    Then a 2nd email:
    sorry,
my mobile 571-316-1381 (571 is the same area code as me, pretty smart)
gonna call tomorrow, got your mail late.
    Cheers

    ----

So I call the next day and talk with him, an American sounding fellow with perhaps a slight accent but he lives in Woodbridge (town near me) and invites me to come see his games.. these are his first games, he is really happy with what he bought, etc.

I'm still a little leary of the whole situation, after all, $13,500 is a lot of money but these 5 games for that is dirt CHEAP (that's the bait). I ask my new friend Richard if he would mind sending me a picture of the machines but this time with a piece of paper with my name written on it next to the machines. He informed me that the machines are already wrapped for shipping (it's been a few days now) but he would oblige, no problem.

I thought.. you know, I'm going to create a fake e-mail account and send him another note on craigslist, and ask him if he still has that CFTBL. If he's a scammer, he'll write back and tell me he does right? Nope, THAT machine is spoken for. At this point, I'm feeling like this is the real deal!

    Pro-level.

I was at work for this part of the deal, and otherwise distracted with a normal busy day.. and this I believe is how they are usually successful. I quickly glanced at the photo on my phone.. and that note... has my name, and the shipping address on it, and attached to a bunch of wrapped pinball machines! Ok, this guy is serious!

    2 (resized).png2 (resized).png

So.. after mulling this over w/ my buddy who is going in on this deal with me.. we work out a plan and he initiates a wire transfer to the guys bank..

    ---

    Account Name .....B.R.F SA
Progressive Bank / 6510 henderson ave shrevport
Account number: (Removed in case it's someone's for real)
    Routing : 111102596

    ---

At this point I'm thinking, OK cool, It's a US based account. It is kinda weird though that it's in Louisiana, but maybe we misunderstood him when he said he's in LA.. he's actually in Shreveport, LA?

He also said that a van was leaving tonight to take some of the other games to NY, and that if the wire transfer went through they could get on the same van, and we'd get the games faster. Great right?

We actually get to the point where the wire transfer goes through, the whole way home from work I'm jawwing it up with my buddy absolutely stoked about what is coming in the mail in the very near future! Excitedly I get home and look at the pictures our friend "Richard" sent in more detail. Wait a second.. that looks photoshopped? (I deleted my address on here)

    1 (resized).jpg1 (resized).jpg
    2 (resized).jpg2 (resized).jpg

I also notice that our friend "Richard" now has a new google profile picture, he's a sharp dressed professional man! Just trying to get his pinball flipping business started right?

    3 (resized).png3 (resized).png

A quick google search for this picture.. (In Chrome, right click "search google for this image") I find that this picture, is actually of a well known professor! http://engineering.ok.ubc.ca/faculty/lbichler.html Poor guy, roped into this and he didn't even know..

Frantically I call the receiving bank and ask them.. "Hey, if you guys got the money already I need you to Freeze the account or something because I think I just got ripped off.." I gave them the account number, and they told me that no wire had gone through yet "phew"

My buddy calls his bank to see if they can stop the wire transfer, I'm sweating bullets hoping it's not too late.. $13,500!! that would suck.

The longest 4 minutes of my life passes by while I wait for my friend to let me know the deal.. and quickly I get a call back and he says..

"Dude, it's cool.. it never went out the door.."

Holy hell, what a bullet dodging.

Now.. I see very similar ads popping up in my neck of the woods, on the DC craigslist (example below). So, I figured I needed to take the story here so that hopefully I save someone some real pain.

    4 (resized).png4 (resized).png

I hope that you guys found this informative, and slightly entertaining (but hopefully not too entertaining at my expense!) I feel so embarrassed and foolish, but hope this transparent post helps someone else out in the future.

TL:DR Craigslist pinball scammers suck, but they didn't get us this time.

    #2 7 years ago

Yep, you were real lucky. Good eye on spotting those photoshopped images. Some people forget that a hand written sign can easily be photoshopped into another image. In this case, it was a quick, sloppy attempt.

The photos in the ad look like the ones from the Italian group that imports containers of games to the US.

I usually do a reverse image search on all the ads I see. If you use chrome or firefox, you can right click on an image and click the option to search for the image, and it will show any search results for that image.

Also, be sure to report actual scams to CL or to Craig himself.

Thank you very much for your posting I would be just the guy who would fall for this and I did not know half the tricks that you did to try and make sure the deal was for real. Heck I got taken advantage of on my last deal come to find out. Thanks again. Got to start being a bit smarter and trust less.

Here's one of the Italian ads. The floors and walls aren't the same, so maybe that's not the source of the images after all.

Dirty bastards.. glad you came out on top man.

You know what?? Someone posted on Facebook arcade group those same two photos of the machines wrapped on pallets saying that they had just bought them as winter projects. Strangely, now I can't find the post which the poster probably deleted.

    That sucks Scum Bags

No offense to those looking to buy games on CL but dealers using that lingo and those prices would NEVER sell games like that on CL.

Not trolling. Definitely embarrassed. But hopefully some good will come of it. Just glad it didn't go all the way south.

I'm glad, too. If you see anything that reads like that, run away... or troll them for a bit

Someone on one of these forums had a good time with one these "!!,,, DEALS". Led them on for a few weeks.

Anytime I have sent a wire, the money is gone instantly. Got lucky there.

About 8 months ago my friend was moving from Calgary to Arizona and I was on cl looking for games and remember this ad (same games/pics) in lower Washington state. Just north of Oregon border. After only a couple of emails i knew it was too good to be true. Looks like his level of scumbag trickery has gotten better. Who even knows if those are games under wrap? Glad you didn't get burned.

    #17 7 years ago

I had a ad similar messaged to me from Louisville KY CL from a fellow pinhead. I read the ad and was like SCAM!!!!

    #18 7 years ago

Yeah, it was a good scam to be sure. Having someone with a local number even offer to let him come over and look at his machines was a clever move along with using original photos of the machines. Not the worse scam and I am glad you did not lose your money.

    #19 7 years ago

The minute he went from 17,700 to 13,500 it was obviously a scam if you hadn't picked that up from his original email. Glad you didn't lose you money on this deal.

    #20 7 years ago

Honestly, the ad page itself screams scam.

"USED [...]/FLIPPERS" - who calls the machine flippers? But I could let that slide as someone just being strange. But once you start reading the descriptions:

"only if connect the display its are in short circuit"
"good general shape , but not start blows the fuse of alimentator box , **any stupidity**"
"just little usually wear on 'terrifyng ' write"

All of these broken sentences, including many that are just gibberish. It reads a lot like the common "hello I am a rich prince" scam.

I'm glad OP didn't get screwed but there are a lot of red flags that should warn people to not even make the first contact.

No need to quote the bible here. This is a pinball forum.

There is one of these on CL Rhode Island. Same ad, same person Rich supposedly from California. Guy had an Indiana Jones for $3500. Mint Condition. Been collecting these pins for a long time and knew he was a scammer. Also beware there are people on Mr Pinball Classified advertising AAA titles for rock bottom prices. Complete scams.

Indicators that English is not their first language, but that's expected in some cases. Euro folks call them flippers.

    #24 7 years ago

But the ad wasn't in Europe. That's my point. Like I said, the descriptions read exactly like the poor wording and spelling you'd find in the old (though still extremely common) rich prince scam. The people originating those scams are, statistically speaking, almost never primarily English speakers: https://www.bbb.org/new-york-city/get-consumer-help/articles/the-nigerian-prince-old-scam-new-twist/

Hi - I am new here. I am always leery of CR for anything so never shop there. I recently bought a POTC from a local dealer (only a few dealers left in my area) and even though I am sure I overpaid some (looking at prices that the game went for on here) I was somewhat OK supporting a local shop as I am not even close to many on here in terms of technical ability so need some help maintaining my games so want to see them stay in business.

That said I was hoping going forward I could use this site as a resource to buy from/sell to other members to save some $ on my end and provide my games to a good future home if I sell. So could it be some of the other members could be running a scam or just CR that the thread is referring to?

Thank you and I REALLY appreciate all the incredible content on this site from obviously really knowledgeable, experienced people. Cheers!

I'm in Los Angeles and he said games are in Idaho one time

Second time I contacted him he said he was in Los Angeles. He was too busy too meet and would email me back.

Glad you didn't lose your money.

    #29 7 years ago

I'm glad you didn't lose your money, and that right there was a serious amount of money to wire over for anything, let alone a deal of a lifetime to someone you've never met or machines you've never seen in person. Glad it all worked out, chalk it up as lesson learned.

    #30 7 years ago

I was working a deal with this same fella on the same c-list add. After several emails and a few phone conversations we had a deal. He wanted a deposite and I said no. Fortunately for me a lot of my friends are airline pilots and can fly free anywhere. So I asked my friend if he'd go down to L.A. to check this out. For some reason a "new container" is coming in on Monday and seller can't seem to make the time to sell $11000 in pins. Also, the pins I wanted were sold out from under me in that short of time span. I was also leary about this deal when I checked LA Craigslist and didn't see his ad for his pins for local sales. It's nearly impossible to scam somebody who is patient, asks for references and updated pictures. People only get scammed when they aren't patient and get in a rush.

    #31 7 years ago

In all of the excitement, knockerlover could have not noticed the final photoshopped pics and the story would have turned out worse for him.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

    #32 7 years ago

One easy way to avoid the Photoshopped pictures thing is ask for a video. It's harder to fake and you can at least verify that the seller is in the same location as the package.

Not everyone has the know-how or capability to do that. Some people struggle with just photos. Not exactly a failsafe request.

The pictures and text are taken verbatim from an email from the Italian company that ships pins around the world.

That's exactly the text he uses ... cut and pasted. "Any stupidity" is one of my favourites.

He is an Italian, english is a second language.

    #35 7 years ago

That was posted semi-locally to me as well. Just the list, so I emailed. He had the whole list to me in 7 minutes. Prices were pretty good, so I asked some more questions. Didn't pass the smell test even though a friend of mine was practically melting wanting to get one. If they are never available to have a local check them out, the games don't exist. I don't know people everywhere, but it wouldn't take long to find a friend of a friend who lives close enough. Luck you for not losing money, but good on you for figuring it out just in time.

    #36 7 years ago

Glad you didn't get ripped off. Personally, I'd never buy out of area, sight unseen, on Craigslist. Way too risky. Craigslist is meant for local in-person deals.

    #37 7 years ago

I was likely blinded by the thought that I had found a source for good condition reimported games or container pinballs. I love restoring games, and this would have been a fun project. I'm still looking if someone knows anyone, but this time I'll prob want to see them somehow first

For sure! I've been involved in many bulk purchases (as buyer and seller) and nobody just agrees to a 25% price cut like that. And nobody who knows these machines would go that low on the prices anyway. If it's too good to be true...

    #39 7 years ago

You got lucky that the bank somehow did not disperse your funds, because normally when they hand you that receipt - that money is gone and you can't ever get it back.

Never wire ANYONE money for a pinball machine, (unless you are wiring an Escrow company).

An Escrow company would have charged you $185 to guard your $13,000 purchase. Money well spent.

    #40 7 years ago

In all my experience and purchases off CL, I have only ever paid the seller once the game is loaded into the back of the car. Usually I can tell a legit ad from a scam right off the bat, but even if it looked legit I'd never wire money or send a check or anything like that. Plus you get to inspect it before buying

Cash and in person. The only way I do business.

I saw the same ad locally and called in. After a quick phone call and exchange of "hey, I'd like to check them out" and "I'm in LA and the games are in Kansas", I figured it was a scam. Easy to get excited by picking up a few projects, but I'm also aware that container games coming into the US are generally in pretty poor condition (the best ones were sent over years ago.) The list was just too good to be true and unless I can seem them in person, I'm going to pass. Still, would have been great to pick up a set of A/B list games for 50% their local price, and at least having a bit of that dream for 15 minutes was fun.

Emailed back and fourth with this guy last week. Told him I wanted 5 games and wanted to see them first. He changed what state he was in several times. Rhode Island, Kentucky, Kansas and Los Angeles.
He emailed pictures of each game I wanted and demanded a 30% deposit. Told him I'd pay in cash in person and to send me a phone number and address. Asked several times and no response. Guy stopped writing back.

Your lucky had a friend not so lucky with a similar deal and a motorcycle. It's a tough lesson to learn

    What do you mean?

I mean that importers and domestic pinball dealers don't sell games like this (in bulk) on CL. The pictures and phrases they used don't match up either. If you are trying to buy reimported pins on CL then you are dealing with a scammer.

Makes sense. Where are all the bulk pinball dealers then?

A lot of the dealers that are left are on Pinside. Yet, some dealers/operators I know that are worth buying from will still only work deals over the phone and in person. There are a few domestic operators left here and there but now, they mostly operate equipment other than pins... Generally speaking, any bulk deals that you could track down 10 years ago are not going to happen these days. Reputation is key when dealing in bulk. Holds true as a general rule of thumb in all business transactions.

Easiest way to feel out scams. Tell the seller by some stroke of luck, your work is sending you to the the very same town where the pins are located, and you'll be there for 3 days. And you'll be able to pay in cash within 24 hours after seeing them, at the XYZ Bank. Real sellers, having real items will be ecstatic. Scammers will quickly recite from the "Excuse Book" as to why they can't meet.
In the real world, people don't list items for sale A)when they are out of town or B)in a location other than where they reside

If you're using that strategy to "feel out" a scam what do you do if the deal isn't a scam? If seller agrees now you're reciting from the excuse book and look like a scammer.

If the seller actually is a straight shooter, simply be honest and tell them in this day & age, with online thievery being so widespread, its simply one of the methods you use to screen out the crooks.
Nearly all online sellers realize long distance buyers are going to possess some angst.

    It's always a scam.
